How old were you when you lost your last grandparent?

I have no grandparents left, my last died when I was 27. Yet I know someone who is almost 30 and has all of her grandparents still living. Can't help but feel a little jealous.

20 when I lost my nana, my grandad died when I was about 10.

Sausagewrole · 08/03/2020 10:39
  1. One died before I was born, the others when I was 16, 18 and 22.

My mums brother also passed away before I was born and my dad has just one sister, who never married and has no children, so I have very little extended family.

Luckystar1 · 08/03/2020 10:39

I was 2 when my grandfather died, all the rest died before I was born.

Nat6999 · 08/03/2020 10:40

I lost mine when I was 6, 9, 28 & 31.

Aragog · 08/03/2020 10:41

I'm 47y and have two remaining, both are 91 (or soon to be for one of them)

One grandad died when I was 17. The other died in the summer - he was a couple of months short of being 90.

Dh's final grandparent died about 3 or 4 years ago, aged 94. The others had all died before I met him when we were 16.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 08/03/2020 10:42

2 :( they all died within 2 years as they were all alive when I was born and weren't particularly old. Looking back it must have been hellish for my parents. I guess I can't miss what I never had, plus my mum has a much older sister who was sort of like a grandmother.

wheresmyhairytoe · 08/03/2020 10:42

27 and I miss them everyday. They died within 3 months of each other.
I treasure the wonderful memories I have of them as they were a big part of my life.

AuntieMarys · 08/03/2020 10:43
  1. The other 3 died when I was 5.

  1. My grandma died last November. She was 92.
ChippyMinton · 08/03/2020 10:44

44 not 444!! My DC and all their cousins were at their 100th birthday celebrations. MY DC are lucky to have all 4 grandparents, but have lost both step-grandparents.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 08/03/2020 10:45

First one I was a baby, second was at 12, third one at 23, the last one is still kicking around, more than 20 years later, but as someone said above, some linger so long they are a shadow of themselves. Having said that my 90+ old grandmother has just gone into a nursing home, frail but still bitching and fighting with everyone just as she has for as long as I can remember...

Aragog · 08/03/2020 10:45

I grew up knowing 4 great grandparents, all on my mum's side. The last of my great grandparents died when I was 15.

17y dd has 4 grandparents: 2 in the 60s and 2 in their 70s. One is very poorly right now but the other three are well and healthy.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 08/03/2020 10:45

I’m 31 & 2 of my Grandparents are still alive (one almost 90, one mid 80’s), one from each side. 1 died when I was 11 the other when I was 28. One of my parents has died though.

ThinkPinkStink · 08/03/2020 10:46

I was 36.

First grandad - I was 4
Second grandad - I was 21
First grandma - I was 22
Last grandma - 36

I tell myself she died at exactly the right time. She was nearly 90, her health was suddenly failing (she lived independently until then), and she died quickly with both of her daughters present. She lived long enough to have a great grandchild. It feels like a 'fair' death, though I miss her with all my heart.

Ydl22 · 08/03/2020 10:46

All four of mine were a huge part of my life. My paternal grandparents did childcare for us while parents worked so we were particularly close to them. My grandfathers both died several years ago, my grandmother 5 years ago and I still have my Nan on mums side. She is 92 and awesome. Myself and dc go see her once a week and she still makes us all dinner and pudding and fusses over us.

Ydl22 · 08/03/2020 10:47

Oh I’m 39

ExpletiveDelighted · 08/03/2020 10:47

36, lost the rest in my teens. I know two people who have got to their early 50s before losing their last.

BrokenBrit · 08/03/2020 10:47

Lost 2 before I was born and my very much loved remaining ones at 23 and 28.
Would have loved longer. Would also have liked to have known my other grandparents as older siblings have lovely memories of them too.

lampsandrain · 08/03/2020 10:48

14

DefConOne · 08/03/2020 10:51

When I was 24. She was only in her 60s. Sadly we hadn’t been close. My mum’s parents who I had been close to both died within a couple of months of each other when I was 11.

PhilCornwall1 · 08/03/2020 10:52

I was 10 when both my gran and gramp died. That's 38 years ago now and I still think about them an awful lot. I just wish my wife and children could have met them.

vampirethriller · 08/03/2020 10:52

18

Crunchymum · 08/03/2020 10:56

I was almost 28 when my last grandparents died.

lubeybooby · 08/03/2020 10:58

I'm 39 and still have three of them. My parents were both very young when I was born.
