How old were you when you lost your last grandparent?

I have no grandparents left, my last died when I was 27. Yet I know someone who is almost 30 and has all of her grandparents still living. Can't help but feel a little jealous.

Beginning of my twenties. One died before I was born, and then at the ages of 7, 18, 23ish?. My mum died when I was 29 so it felt weird to me when people my age started to lose grandparents when my ex husband and I started to lose parents.

idontwanttogoooooooooooo · 08/03/2020 13:07

My grandad (the last grandparent to go) was 87 when he died, but my mums Dad was 93, but of course it depends when they had children and how old your parents were when they had you.

Newcatmum · 08/03/2020 13:07

My ex is 32 and still has all four of his plus his step grandparents. His last great grandparent died about 5 years ago. I'm almost 29 and have one grandparent and one great grandparent.

Tiggering · 08/03/2020 13:09

10 or 11. I’m not exactly sure. Both of my grandmothers died when I was 6 and both of my grandfathers died when I was in the last year of primary school.

KahlanRahl · 08/03/2020 13:09

My DH is 42 and still has his gran. I have to say that we'd rather see that she hurried up though because she is daily terribly abusive of MIL who doesn't get out of the FOG.

  1. But the other set of grandparents died when I was very young and the other in my early twenties. I had one very long living grandparent.
canterburytales · 08/03/2020 13:10

21 with my grandad and 35 with my grandma. I was incredibly close to them and grateful I had them for as long as I did.

delilabell · 08/03/2020 13:12

Two died before I was born. One died when I was 35. The other one is alive but estranged at 38 as she's horrible.

chocolatespiders · 08/03/2020 13:13

Last March when I was 42

jarviscockatiel · 08/03/2020 13:14

All of mine had died before I was born.

Flairhead · 08/03/2020 13:15

Lost my first when I was 14, the last died when I was 23. Would love to still have them around because they were just the best.

TooMuchBloodyChoice · 08/03/2020 13:15

I was 20 when I had lost the last grandparent. I was 14 when my favourite grandparent died, my maternal GM. The hardest part was seeing the heartache of my mum losing her mum. We all loved my GM so much, and I often think that must be a lovey legacy to have.

My DD’s have only one set of GP’s left. They are very close to their GP’s and hopefully we will have them around for a very long time.

I was 25 when my beloved granny died. My son was 40 - lost both his last - and closest - two within six months.

DopeyMum16 · 08/03/2020 13:16

15 . My U.K. grandfather died before I was born and my grandmother here died when I was 4. Lost my grandfather in Ireland when I was c 8 then my grandmother there when I was 15 but never knew them that well

I’m 37 and my last granny is still going strong. She’s an amazing woman and I’m lucky to have her (as are all 15 of her grandchildren). She has 12 great grandchildren already and I hope she’ll live to see a few more yet. That said, she’s sharp as a tack and still lives independently, if either of those changed I don’t think she would want to stick around.

OttosTitsling · 08/03/2020 13:17

I had all 4 grandparents until I was 21. Now at 42 I have one grandma still alive, although she’s now 99 and pretty frail. My kids though have only ever known 3 grandparents, my husband’s dad died years before we ever met.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 08/03/2020 13:17

She’s 93 btw

changedmyname2019 · 08/03/2020 13:18

I'm 30 and haven't had any grand parents for 13 years.

Megan2018 · 08/03/2020 13:18

I’m 42 and still have 1 left -she’s 93 and still lives independently. I lost 2 in the same year when I was 30/31 and another when I was 9.

Mintjulia · 08/03/2020 13:18

6months. My paternal Grandmother.

But my dad was 55 when I was born, and my mum 42 so not a surprise.

80sMum · 08/03/2020 13:19

I was 46 when my last surviving grandparent died.

Anoisagusaris · 08/03/2020 13:19

I’m 43 and still have one.

sageandroses · 08/03/2020 13:20

My dad was 57 when he lost his last one.

Babdoc · 08/03/2020 13:23

My maternal grandfather died in 1926, when my mother was 10. Granny died in 1950. My paternal grandparents both died before the end of the 1960’s, when I was still at primary school. So I either never met, or barely knew, any of them.
