"Just curious if all the posters saying Irish names are Irish or have Irish connections or relatives?"

Nope, none whatsoever, which is why we didn't use it in the end Grin

I'm pg with our 2nd and I love Saoirse (I'm of Irish descent) but I worry i would be condemning a child to constant spelling corrections. I love it tho!

I wanted to name my daughter Inara, but chickened out. I regret it! She'd have suited it very well (although she suits her actual name too).

I wanted to name my son Ragnar (he's Norwegian) but didn't do it because I am 100% my UK family would have mispronounced it (some of them deliberately) as RAG-narrrrr and it would have driven me batty.

Quin for a boy
Matilda for a girl

We didn't have a boy. Not sure why we didn't go for Matilda Confused

When DD1 was born it was a choice between Emily and obscure name no one can spell or pronounce if they see it written down. It's a lovely name, but I do still (years later) sometimes wish we had gone for Emily instead. Though yesterday I worked with 2 Emilys and that got confusing, so maybe it is better to have a very unusual name.

I also wish we could have used Freya or Lydia but couldn't because they had already been used within the family.

We don't have a boy and don't intend to have more DC, so Jude, Nathaniel, Rowan are all names we couldn't use. Also, Benjamin, which wasn't really on the shortlist because it was already used by family.

I'm giving my age away here and possibly outing myself, I wanted to call DD Kayleigh and DS Freddie Mercury (I was 13 weeks pg with him when Freddie died) I almost talked now exh into Kayleigh but no chance with Freddie Mercury, when my obviously now adult DS moans about his very common first name, I just say 'I wanted to call you Freddie Mercury (Surname) so you got off lightly Grin Wink

I genuinely don't understand not being brave enough to use any particular name. Brave as in how? Are people scared they'll be judged on their name choices? I literally could not give AF what people think of what I name my child/ren.

I've only go the one DD at the moment so lots of names I like for a potential DD

Astrid (surprised to see it mentioned so much!)
Francesca (Family name)
Genevieve

Boys.. hmm not many boys names I like tbh

flossiewossie124 · 06/03/2020 19:03

Incidentally, is there an Irish male name that sounds like "Fire"?

@HarrietThePi Can't think of one that sounds like Fire Confused Tiny possibility it might be Fiachra? (fee-kra) depends on the accent I guess!

HarrietThePi · 06/03/2020 19:07

It could have been that flossie. The recording wasn't particularly good quality so I may have misheard.

LaLaLaLa22 · 06/03/2020 19:11

Allegra
Saskia
Eliza
Penny

My DDs name is on this list a lot. We haven't met another one yet but everyone knows how to say and spell it. I still love it.

bananamonkey · 06/03/2020 19:29

Nina
Betsy
Romy
Romily

Currently expecting DD2 but still can’t use these as DH vetoed 2, one doesn’t go with our surname and we used one for DD1’s middle name as a compromise from DH but I wanted it for a first name.

BahMooQuack · 06/03/2020 19:37

Leveret. For a girl.

Sigh.

bunnyrabbit93 · 06/03/2020 19:41

Arlo
Alice - I still could if I had one more child

36degrees · 06/03/2020 19:47

Constance or Olympia. Both vetoed by DH.

dontforgettofloss · 06/03/2020 19:50

Bronwyn
Fletcher
Gabriel
Daniel

Miggymoggymugwumps · 06/03/2020 19:52

I really wanted Laurel for my daughter but couldn't get husband to agree!

missmouse101 · 06/03/2020 19:52

Fenella, Fern, Esme
Toby, Seth

CountFosco · 06/03/2020 20:00

Still love all the DCs names but if we'd had all boys or all girls we'd have used some of the following:

Ingrid
Sigrid
Freyja (have loved this for years and is culturally significant to me but didn't use because Freya is so popular)
Thorfinn
Harald (nn Hal)
Sigurd

Add me to the love for Erika as well.

Kittykatmacbill · 06/03/2020 20:03

Greta! Definitely the name of my third daughter.

And a hole squad of small boys Alexander (nn Sandy), Ian, Robert, Hector and James Tiberius. Probably best I didn’t have such a heap of boys though!
