TBH I always thought he was gay and it was known. I was more surprised a couple of years ago, when I learned he was actally married.

people are writing into This Morning to say that they are 'crying with happiness' for Philip.

Yeah, I'm sure this is thrilling for his family. Same as that Welsh Rugby star who dumped his wife and came out. He's fully celebrated now as a hero. Honestly.

Agree that it's difficult to come out, but he could have quietly separated from his wife years ago and let her find someone who loved her the way she deserves to be loved.

I may live in a cupboard as I didn’t know he was married (to a woman!) or had kids etc. I think I’ve always assumed he was gay if I ever thought about it.

As he's comfortably (judging by the rumours that have been swirling for years) kept this secret for so long, I'm deeply suspicious that he was about to be outed or something.

The husband of one of my Mum's friends has just come out of the closet, in his mid-80s after I would guess at least 50 years of marriage. His wife is devastated that almost her whole life has been based on quite a fundamental lie. The adult children are pretty shaken too I think. Fortunately for them they don't have to publicly express media-approved emotions of support and pride, which must be an extra layer of stress for those who do.

Maybe his wife has had to come to terms with it now. But I really doubt she knew before they were married and had kids. He might not have lied for the full 30 years, but long enough for her to commit her life to him.

Bullshit he was in a generation when it was unacceptable to be gay. He's not much older than me. Especially since he lived in London and worked in the media. Worried about his career maybe.

I feel for his family.
