Blimey. Married for 27 years.

No one knows what the relationship between him and his wife is like apart from them.

I am just so sorry in this day and age that he felt he had to hide who he really was...he must have lived a painful existance for years..maybe now he will get some inner peace.

I hope his wife and kids are ok with the big announcement. If you have been in a long term relationship it isn't just about you.

Rumours have been going round since the 80 / 90s. I remember it being suggested on Spitting Image. I feel very sorry for his wife - poor woman.

It's easy to be brave when you get what you want.

Not so easy when you are the one being left, when you realise that your husband wanted something different.

Or having to realise that your father is not quite what you thought he was.

Hopefully it's always been an open relationship and his wife has always known. He's clearly been exploring outside of the marriage.

@Bezalelle why poor daughters. Being gay doesn’t make you a terrible father. Unfortunately he was born in a generation where it wasn’t acceptable to be gay, especially in the entertainment business. There are no doubt many people in the public eye who sadly can’t be themselves for fear of being judged. He as probably known for many many years and his wife has also clearly known for a while. I’m sure his daughters will love him regardless.

Does being gay mean his marriage vows don't count? That's what I don't understand.

My first thought was Jameela Jamil will be raging. She comes out as 'queer' and then Phillip comes out as gay and steals all the 'straight British presenter is no longer straight' publicity

Haven't RTFT but someone posted recently saying a high profile man would come out as gay.

Maybe his wife knew. Maybe they have had discussions about it and decided not to say anything to the public. it's all very well giving him a flogging but really, we don't know the facts.

I think a few other presenters might admit they are now and copy him. As I said on the other thread I thought he was when he was in the broom cupboard but thought I was wrong when he married Steph. There was something about his mannerisms that made me think he was gay.

My sister is gay, she knew from a very young age. In my opinion you are born gay.

It's a massive shame he felt he couldn't be himself and was scared what people will think, but I feel much more sorry for his wife. Her marriage has been a lie in some of way. He loves her but not the way she should he loved. I'd be devastated.

Saying that good luck to them all and hope he finds happiness, you only get one life. Same for his wife. Find someone suitable for her
