After the old school reading thread, who else loved point horror!?

OP posts:
ActualHornist · 27/01/2020 18:49

@DisinterestedParty I had that one! I had another collection which had a short story by Philip Pullman, it was about an antisocial girl who preferred reading to anything else - then she drowned and couldn’t pick up books so couldn’t read anymore!

The Fever was by Diane Hoh. I wish these books were still in print!

elf81 · 27/01/2020 18:50

That last message was supposed to say the accident was also my favourite.

Soulstirring · 27/01/2020 18:53

Christopher Pike whisper of death and remember me - i memorises that floor plan! I loved those books (and all his others!). My dad was working in the US and brought them back before they hit the UK. I couldn’t wait for his other books.

ActualHornist · 27/01/2020 18:56

OMG the Greek gods and goddesses one - that one gave me nightmares! Think that was also one with the ground up glass...

Daisychainsandglitter · 27/01/2020 19:10

I used to love these books! This thread brings back happy memories. Does anyone remember The hitchhiker?
I'm tempted to order some on e bay for a bit of nostalgic reading.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 27/01/2020 19:10

I loved these!

My first was funhouse and it scared the shit out of me, especially when she was getting chased through the funhouse at the end.

I also liked The Babysitter but I was also reading The Babysitters Club series at the time so it seemed extra scary.

I also liked Dream Date which was much scarier to me than any of the Nightmare on Elm Street films.

Does anyone remember The Dead Game? I was determined at one point to start something similar in my school ConfusedHmm

Btw if anyone hasn’t already discovered them, there are loads of snark reviews written up about 90s teen books including Point Horror, The Babysitters Club, Sweet Valley High and probably loads more

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 29/01/2020 18:28

I bought the Forbidden Gane trilogy on my kindle thanks to this thread.

Yes please to Julian. Always time for a sexy demon.

I may well buy some more when I've read these.

Starburst8 · 29/01/2020 18:46

After this thread I really wanna dig my books out... Slight problem I'm gonna have to turn the room upside down finding them 🤣🤔

I used to love reading them and used to hope they did sequels. Some of them did but the ones I really wanted never did.

I never really got into Point Crime or Point romance. I read a few of Christopher Pike but I found it wasn't the same 🙊

BabloHoney · 29/01/2020 18:48

I loved these too, my favourite was Trick or treat by Richie tankersley Cusick.

Read all the Christoper Pike books too, Chain Letter and Chain Letter 2 absolutely terrified me! I remember Slumber Party, with the scary burning snowman on the front cover. Oh and one called Monster which started with a girl shooting some of her classmates because she’d found out they were cannibals I think??! Confused

BemidjiMinnesota · 29/01/2020 19:07

@LadyTabasco

loved Point Horror. My favourite was about a girl who moved into a big house and her bedroom was in the turret. A vampire lived in there and could grant her wishes, so she wished to be beautiful and popular. However, the price was that the vampire was sucking the life out of her family. Does anyone remember what that one was called?

I think that was The Cheerleader and the only other thing I remember about it was that the main character was called Althea, just because I thought that was the most impossibly sophisticated name in the world. 😂

Dove and Wing were characters in The Perfume. Wing was the absorbed twin, the reincarnation of an Egyptian queen, brought to life by Dove smelling a mysterious perfume in the mall. Obviously.

@DisinterestedParty

Loved them especially the short story collections, I think they were called 13 Tales of Horror and 13 More Tales of Horror. Scared myself to death reading one of those on a guide camping trip.

Was that the one with the story of the skoffins? Strange, half cat, half dog creatures that hunt and kill humans at night in the woods. It's been 25 years and I still crap myself if I'm ever in the woods at night because of those bloody skoffins.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 29/01/2020 19:36

I never really got into Point Crime or Point romance.

Neither did I.

I felt so grown up (aged 12) when a librarian told me they had new Goosebumps books in and I witheringly replied that those were for children and I only liked Point Horror books now 😂

evilharpy · 29/01/2020 19:39

I’ve been ploughing through some Point Horror books on Kindle Unlimited recently. They’re a lot less scary when you’re pushing forty... but so nostalgic.

Halfeatentoast · 29/01/2020 19:42

soupstirring yes! Remember Me! And Remember Me 2! Loved them! Wow! Hadn't thought about them in years!

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 29/01/2020 19:47

Your post made me laugh. Not so much with Point Horror but Goosebumps used to end a chapter with something like “he closed his eyes and cowered as he felt an intimidating creature approach him. He felt the hot, smelly breath against his face and winced as he faced his death” and then the next chapter would open with “He didn’t feel anything and opened his eyes and discovered it was his pet dog standing over him, tail wagging and tongue hanging out in a friendly manner”. I used to be gripped (and terrified) as a kid reading stuff like that. Grin

Londonsuffolkmummy · 29/01/2020 19:48

Me loved them

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 29/01/2020 19:54

@Halfeatentoast there was a third one as well. Not really sure why though. Loved the first one though

ActualHornist · 29/01/2020 20:18

@BemidjiMinnesota yes the skoffins! And Althea who became friends with Becky the cheerleader with the twitchy ponytail Grin

I’m thinking I’m going to have to sign up for a month of kindle unlimited and just smash through them all!

Starburst8 · 29/01/2020 20:20

I don't have kindle, is there any way I can get them on my android phone/tablet?

I may have to "waste" a few quid on ebay 🤣🤣

TheBenefitsPeople · 29/01/2020 20:39

Just going to drop this here then get back to Monster and pretend I'm 15 again...

BethanyGilbert · 29/01/2020 20:47

Haven’t read the thread so it may have been mentioned but there is a podcast called Teen Creeps when they read and review Point Horror and Christopher Pike books.

Starburst8 · 29/01/2020 21:15

(Apologies if this posts twice. It said unable to post) Woo I found them finally.
Think I'll read Dream Date first.
Secretly hoping they're as good as I remember Grin

Point horror
StarspaXxX · 29/01/2020 21:23

I used to love these! Funhouse was my first...

Some of them were so badly written, though Grin ah, nostalgia!

NerrSnerr · 29/01/2020 21:25

I loved Point Horror. I remember the Nightmare Hall series, loved them. Going to try and find some in the charity shop for when my children are older for me.

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 30/01/2020 16:26

Whoever just mentioned memorising the floor plan in Remember Me above, hilarious!! I totally relate to that Grin

Iooselipssinkships · 30/01/2020 16:46

Oh I started with Goosebumps then moved on to Point Horror. Room 13 (I think?) was absolutely terrifying.
