Just read this on their instagram page.
They plan on becoming private citizens

@bohemia14
I feel disappointed they didn’t go the whole hog. Renounce the titles. Pay back X money a year for the houses/refurbishments etc etc form public money. She goes back to TV acting, he buys a Ford Fiesta and trains as a manager at McDonalds (Or goes back to the army). And make a pledge to never cash in via TV interviews, books, articles, etc. Now that would be impressive.

MsPepperPotts · 08/01/2020 19:37

I think it's fantastic news for them.
I wish them all the best getting away from this hate filled Britain.
They deserve to be happy.

stuffedpeppers · 08/01/2020 19:37

Do you know what - I started out as pro - Harry seemed happy and they were getting on and doing stuff. Excellent

Then came the prima donna behaviour - the typical celebrity- the Press is too much etc etc. Hiding - people are picking on me. I think Megan thought she knew fame like many celebrities but being part of The Royal Family - is on a different level of fame and celebrity. With their fame comes a sense of duty - which both of them seem to have forgotten.

They will trade on their connections in a very public way to make monies but diss the "thing" that makes them interesting. If you want to be financially independent you do what Peter and Zara have done . No titles, find a job and work at it. Yes the royal connections have helped both of them but they both work and pay for themselves.

i find the hypocrisy hard to stomach - if you want to be private citizens excellent - drop the HRH and hello Harry and Meghan.

Would not have their lives for anything - if this makes them happy then fine but just less press coverage then.

NOOOOOOooooooooo!!! How will the country cope!!!???

sonjadog · 08/01/2020 19:38

Who could blame them with all the bullying and nasty comments they have endured. If I were them, I would leave and never come back.

MarshaBradyo · 08/01/2020 19:39

Great if they want to be financially independent. Good idea.

Pixxie7 · 08/01/2020 19:39

Providing they give up taking any money of the tax payer good for them, but they can’t have their cake and eat it.

damnthatanxiety · 08/01/2020 19:40

LochJessMonster I pretty much think that nasty comments like your is what drove them to this. They were in a no-win situation. Be royal and they were CONSTANTLY attacked for how they did it. Now they are taking a step back and you STILL have a problem. There are countless minor royals who have undertaken some royal duties and been paid expenses for those but you seem to have no problem with them. Only Harry and Meghan. Or more to the point, Meghan. Your bigotry is outstanding.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/01/2020 19:40

I bet that was an interesting Christmas Dinner at Sandringham

mrscampbellblackagain · 08/01/2020 19:40

Harry has had a pretty easy ride of it really. I mean he has made mistakes but the press/public loved him - he was pretty much the most popular royal!

I think this turn around has been pretty hard to take for him. He hasn't looked great the last couple of years - hopefully this will work out much better for them.

I’m sure it’s the right move for them, but they’re not sacrificing a jot. Basically they get to knock all the tedious royal bullshit on the head while still living lives of unimaginable luxury.
Power + money: loads Responsibility: zero.
Nice work if you can get it!

Given Andrew cannot be used anymore, and the duke of Edinburgh already retired, Harry stepping back is pushing a lot of work onto a much smaller pool of people.

damnthatanxiety · 08/01/2020 19:41

Cam77 why would he EVER get a low level job? He is qualified to do so much more. He has been involved in charity work, he has set up the Invictus games, he is an ex-soldier - an officer. He has skills. He is highly personable. Why are people so weird and think that 'work' means 'down t'mines'?

Bettercallsaul1 · 08/01/2020 19:42

The unrelenting bullying of the couple - especially Meghan - started long before any charges of hypocrisy over ecological issues arose. The tabloids launched a campaign against them as soon as Meghan appeared on the scene and have continued since then.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 08/01/2020 19:42

Yep. Textbook narcissist.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 08/01/2020 19:43

I think there will be lots of appearances on US talk shows, endorsements, and in time a return to the Tig type blogs. A fashion line perhaps? The time spent across the pond will increase until they are no longer here at all. HM will not be at the helm for much longer and Charles will probably just let them get on with it.
I feel sorry for William and Kate as they will have to step up to the plate a lot more, as will Charles.
We have gone from the Fab Four to this is such a short time. Its imploding before our eyes. I agree that Meghan has probably given Harry an ultimatum, or what amounts to one. The question is whether he will be happy in another country, surrounded by Meghan's mostly celebrity pals and her mother , with no real role himself. Increasingly isolated within his own family. I think Harry would love to be like Zara or Beatrice and Eugenie in terms of being free from the shackles of Royal responsibility. It isn't going to be a simple matter to disentangle himself though.

HermioneWeasley · 08/01/2020 19:43

The “working towards” being financially independent is baffling - they are multi millionaires, what’s stopping them?

Disfordarkchocolate · 08/01/2020 19:43

I'm really pleased for them.

Harry has sacrificed enough in his life. Meghan is a very intelligent woman, I'm sure they'll forge a new and innovative path.

AraGrand · 08/01/2020 19:44

Other countries' commentators are saying that he's not blue blood anyway...

FagAsh · 08/01/2020 19:44

This is brilliant

For them personally
For not taking any more shit off the press
For bringing us closer to throwing off those parasites

.. And surely they wil siphon off less cash now

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 08/01/2020 19:44

I think Harry will be bored in the US.
I see him eventually ending up in Africa. And not with Meghan

mrscampbellblackagain · 08/01/2020 19:44

I think Harry has done a lot but pretty sure has had a good team to actually deliver stuff.

His main advantage is his position due to birth and connections. And that is a tricksy thing to monetise ethically.

I really reckon Meghan will become the big earner - she could become the most successful influencer ever.

LochJessMonster · 08/01/2020 19:44

Why do some people continue to infantilise a 35 year old man, Because he acts like a child.

Poor me, how dare the country that I am Prince of, who fund most my lifestyle, want a single photo of my Son.
And I shall moan about it whilst standing in a fucking hospital surrounded by people who are much much worse off.
