Just read this on their instagram page.
They plan on becoming private citizens

OP posts:

Are they getting proper jobs then? Meg off back to Hollywood? Harry can get a job at Tesco or somewhere.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 08/01/2020 19:29

How are they going to earn money privately? Will we see sponsorship deals like we did with Fergie or will they be cosying up to wealthy friends and all of the risks that entails?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 08/01/2020 19:30

All Harry has to trade on his name and title; he’s not the sharpest tool in the box and has no discernible talents.

She’s a moderately successful actress but will be limited now in the parts she can choose. She’s very pretty but has (at least temporarily) lost her figure since her pregnancy and she’s knocking on a bit now.

They are not former politicians or great thinkers to be lecturing people or having anything to say worth listening to.

People forget how popular a Prince Andrew was. Harry will become a similar nonentity quicker than he can imagine. I doubt his ego will enjoy that.

Thinking about it though, give it 10 -15 years

It's Will and Kate on their own. With a bit of a hand from the Wessexes
But in 20 years their children will be adults. Wills and Kate are hardly overworked now are they? Dont they do about 1/4 of the engagements of HM? And half of them are things like going to Wimbledon or the Chelsea flower show- things most people do in their leisure time!

Magpiesshinynest · 08/01/2020 19:30

Don’t you think though that this would never have happened if he has ever met Meghan? All of this falling out with the other members of the family, only happened when he met her?

I doubt things would be like this if he had married any other woman

Wildorchidz · 08/01/2020 19:30

I think they are absolutely right to do this.
There are vile posters on this thread.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/01/2020 19:30

It's on my news now, gosh he looks like his Grandad.

Lulualla · 08/01/2020 19:30

Even if it is because she "couldn't hack it" then so what? I probably couldn't put up with that either. Kate will be Queen. She was fully prepped for that before marriage and had the chance to leave. She gets the big role. Meghan would always need to be a step behind, would not be able to express herself or her political views, and even when she tries to do things properly she was hounded by press and even mumsnet threads. Constantly.
So if the only reason they are doing this is because she has said she wants too then I think that's fair enough. Who would go through all that and stay, whilst raising their kids in the middle of it when they wont even eventually end up with the top job?

elfies · 08/01/2020 19:30

I could always see one or both of the boys leaving the royal merry go round , though I thought it might be william who said'my mum wasn't good enough to be a royal , so I don't want the job '.
Having said that , it is a shame that the brothers are now at loggerheads ,though I do wonder if Harry let his plans slip to william who didn't approve . I did note Harry will fully support his grandmother the queen , but did not mentioning supporting his father or brother in the future role . I think Megan is the driving force behind Harry's plans and hope Harry doesn't live to regret the descision

PortiaCastis · 08/01/2020 19:31

I hope the law suits scupper those gutter newspapers with an agenda how awful they've been and how bloody low, 70p per year in tax does not give them or anyone carte blanche to be kerb licking abusive arseholes

Tricicorn · 08/01/2020 19:31

I lost any respect I had for them when they stood in the grounds of a centre in South Africa for people who had lost limbs in land mine areas, saying that they were existing not living and how hard their lives were and that they were not OK etc. That was the wrongest or wrong settings to bemoan their lot.

They have had a lot of criticism but a fair amount of that has been the result of their hypocrisy around their lecturing on environmental issues while they have a huge carbon footprint and writing crass messages on cupcakes and bananas to make sex workers feel validated and loved. Meghan wants her celebrity lifestyle with her celebrity friends doing what she wants where she wants. I have no idea what she thought being a Royal was like or involved but she clearly wants shut of it. Harry naturally wants her to be happy and fulfilled and he hates press intrusion so it is probably what he wants too. But whizzing about betwixt the uk and the us will gobble up a lot of fuel.

goodbyestranger · 08/01/2020 19:31

Good shout from Harry and Meghan. Fabulous.

Haworthia · 08/01/2020 19:32

Charles’ plans to streamline the Royal family down to the immediate heirs is fairly well known, so in that sense I’m not surprised. I AM surprised to see the blind items about H&M hoping to “monetise” everything come true, however...

Meh. Good luck to them.

coatlessinspokane · 08/01/2020 19:32

Good luck to them. They have enough money to do it. And they will be away from vultures.

scaryteacher · 08/01/2020 19:32

Had this not been the Sussexes, and this being MN, wouldn't there have been comments about Harry being isolated from his family; a change in personality; not appearing at family events; a rift with hitherto close relations? There are red flags here, and I hope he doesn't get badly hurt.

DickDewy · 08/01/2020 19:32

I'd far rather Meghan to boring Kate, tbh. She is a better role model, had a career beforehand, was proactive and modern and seems to have an actual personality.

But I am very pleased to see them make this decision.

bluebells1 · 08/01/2020 19:32

More drama. And wonder how much this whole farce will cost the taxpayer!

QforCucumber · 08/01/2020 19:33

I hope that they will refund the cost of their Frogmore refurbishment
People amuse me - the refund, per tax payer, would be about 20p. Do you really need your 20p that much?
Harry has never acted as a senior royal 'should' he got drunk and naked around paparazzi, dated models, has been the scandal headline many times. Yet it's all Meghan who has instigated this? I'd say hes probably wanted to step back for a long time but never had the support to actually do so.

TheYearOfTheDog · 08/01/2020 19:33

They should have just issied a statement saying they werent accepting taxpayers' money anymore. Or whatever they the royals call it. 🤦‍♀️

Lulualla · 08/01/2020 19:33

@TinklyLittleLaugh

Before Meghan got involved with Harry, she was heavily involved with charities. It seemed like she was heading in the direction of doing that sort of thing with her life; then she married him and had to step away from that whilst she moved into royally accepted charity work.
She was a moderately successful actress with an up and coming lifestyle website and a big pile or charity work. If she can go back to doing those things without the royal etiquette dragging her back then that's probably a good thing

AraGrand · 08/01/2020 19:34

I always liked Meghan until Archie came into the picture. The absolute paranoia about him being photographed is pure lunacy. Fgs we don't need to see him daily, but their utter unwillingness to share anything about their child irked me. If they had just shared an odd picture, nobody would actually care. I think Meghan has given Harry an ultimatum and he has chosen Meghan. Fair play to him. But I think she decided it's me or the firm. I know this won't work out for them as she actually in some ways sounds like a little histrionic! They're not even 2 years married yet. They won't last another 2.

mrscampbellblackagain · 08/01/2020 19:34

They are wealthy but they are no Bill and Melinda Gates.

If they wanted decent properties in the US and London - that would eat up a lot of their capital.

The RF live like billionaires but H&M don't have that amount of cash. Personally I think her personal wealth has been over estimated but she could certainly earn a lot now if she became an influencer ;)

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/01/2020 19:35

@noodlenosefraggle

But with a monarch in her 90s and her heir in his 70s, they could suddenly find themselves in the top job in a heartbeat really

AraGrand · 08/01/2020 19:35

People amuse me - the refund, per tax payer, would be about 20p. Do you really need your 20p that much?

No, but if everyone wants to donate 20p to me, I'd be quite happy.
