Just read this on their instagram page.
They plan on becoming private citizens

Meghan was the most googled person in the world last year, I don't think she could have ever foreseen the level of press intrusion and downright nastiness aimed at her. Every tabloid had several stories about her a day, look at the nonsense with her sister and dad, she was even attacked for wanting to give birth in private.

I think they seem like a couple in love, and who can blame them from wanting to step back from the shitshow from the past couple of years.

I'm sure they will live more of a celebrity lifestyle, but hope they are happy.

Cam77 · 08/01/2020 19:44

@damnthatanxiety
why would he EVER get a low level job? He is qualified to do so much more.

I think he seems a nice enough bloke. But virtually every job he has ever had is due to who his granny is, apart from the army stuff, though even that was I think quite far from the “normal” experience for obvious reasons.

It does bring us closer to ending it all. Their dc will not have to do it.

I’m really pleased they’ve done it.

hopeishere · 08/01/2020 19:45

What rubbish. Financially independent when he's already a millionaire. Right. What this means is we want to at best accept free stuff at worst add a swipe up to buy on our Instagram.

Secondly if the wanted to fade into the background they could. But they don't. They want to "make a difference" but think they can do that better outside the Royal Family.

They think they can control the message and coverage they can't. In fact this will make it worse.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 08/01/2020 19:45

I think Meghan is aiming for billionaire / oprah style rich.

overnightangel · 08/01/2020 19:45

They can pay back the £4.6m or whatever it was that the taxpayers paid for doing their house up then

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 08/01/2020 19:46

I have no idea what she thought being a Royal was like or involved but she clearly wants shut of it.

I doubt this. I think the status is useful. They want less constraints over things they do, causes they endorse whilst still using their high profile status to achieve their ends.

The only thing is all the PR decisions they've taken where they've ignored official advice and restraint has not gone well. Their PR has been a disaster hitherto now. I fail to see how it will improve with even less restraint.

But I do think it's better for them personally overall

NotACleverName · 08/01/2020 19:46

Oh, there it is again. MN's favourite word, "narcissist." Let's gloss over the fact that it's actually a rather rare diagnosis and apply to everyone I don't like; from the MIL to people in the public eye.

Honestly some of you need to have words with yourselves.

yellowapples987 · 08/01/2020 19:46

he was so close to his brother and family. In such a very short period of time, he's tossed all that aside for someone he's only really known a short time and only had a handful of dates with, before marriage. Meghan seems happy to cut people out and move on, but I can't imagine Harry being content with that in the longterm.

FatherRabulaConundrum · 08/01/2020 19:46

Nah, I think this is all him and absolutely nothing to do with her. Meghan Markle's effectively given him a good reason to 'need' to spend more time out of the country, and an insight into how billionaire friends with private jets can make things happen without Dad's permission. I can quite easily imagine PH coming up with the big plan to step back from cake-eating while retaining his official cake-eating title and her not knowing how to tell him no. No wonder they weren't at Sandringham this Christmas.

I feel for Harry, I think he needs a lot of support. I'm not sure this half-in, half-out approach to the spotlight is going to be the easy answer.

narcissistseverywhere · 08/01/2020 19:46

First rule of Mumsnet, only MILs can be narcissists, not beautiful, young actresses

TinklyLittleLaugh · 08/01/2020 19:46

What Chestnut said.

Harry leapt in too fast I think. But then he’s not very bright or psychologically robust.

WeshMaGueule · 08/01/2020 19:47

Do people really think Harry set up the games single-handed rather than being the figurehead for a lot of other people's hard work? Does he really have any discernable skills?

Pinotpleasure · 08/01/2020 19:47

I haven’t had time to read all 8 pages so far in this thread - but my first thought when I heard it on the radio ‘breaking news’ was this:

Harry is known to be rather dim. I’ve always thought that Meghan will divorce him one day. Canada and the USA are signatories to The Hague Convention. In the event of an international child custody dispute I would imagine that Meghan would prefer to reside permanently in Canada or the USA.

If it can be shown that the child (or any other children they may have) have sent a significant/most of their time being resident in Canada or the USA, then the Courts must rule that the child stays permanently as a resident in that country under The Hague Convention rules.

Meghan is being really rather clever.....

ballsdeep · 08/01/2020 19:47

Well done to Harry I say! He's put his wife and family above anything else and won't put up with the utter shite show she has had to endure over the past few years. The press and people have been relentless in their pursuit of her and she could piss a rainbow and they'd moan there wasn't a dancing leprechaun at the end!

SilverySurfer · 08/01/2020 19:47

I'm happy for them and hope the vile press find something else to vilify.

Cam77 · 08/01/2020 19:47

You have to admit Meghan Markle has played a blinder compared to Kate the Duchess of Boredom. All that power and money with none of the tedious royal bullshit, accompanying M&S wardrobe and 1820s baby gear. Well played woman!

diddl · 08/01/2020 19:48

I Charles is intent on "slimming down" & it's not working for them, seems the only/best solution.

Although I would have though that Charles "slimming down" would still have included Harry & his family.

mrscampbellblackagain · 08/01/2020 19:48

Totally agree with you @CurlyWurlyTwirly

The project with Oprah makes sense now

lilybetsy · 08/01/2020 19:48

What Meghan wants, Meghan gets ....

I am a big supporter of the Queen, and have a developing respect for Charles, Camilla, William and Kate ... but she is just a fame hungry hypocritical nasty piece of work who will use and spit out Prince Harry when she is not “thriving” yuk ...

FairyLightsAreMyCrack · 08/01/2020 19:48

Good for them, I'm sure they will be happier away from the bullying campaign.

Glad to see there are some personal friends of both of them on this thread who know all about their personalities and the workings of their relationship Hmm

Seriously, if you feel the need to publicly bitch and moan about someone you don't know to the extent you have to go on a forum to spew out your bile please consider your behaviour.

FatherRabulaConundrum · 08/01/2020 19:48

I wonder if they've announced this now because she's newly pregnant, and they don't want to have the media crawling all over her again?

It's not the best timing for the RF, what with Andrew's financial 'independence' being turned over so publicly.

Cam77 · 08/01/2020 19:49

@lilybetsy
She’s played a blinder! Well done Meghan.

ChicCroissant · 08/01/2020 19:49

I don't think it's Meghan's decision, I think it's Harry's. He seems to be struggling with his mental health so it's a good idea to step back.
