Are Jo Malone diffusers and candle as great as everyone says?

I have some Christmas money and would like to buy a nice candle or diffuser that I can actually smell around the house!

Over the years I’ve had so many different brand diffusers and candle but have never been able to justify spending the amount that the Jo Malone ones cost! Shock

I like a nice strong scent that I can notice as soon as I walk into the room.

If you've had a Jo Malone before how do you rate them? Or what would you recommend instead? Thanks

Love jo malone but given the love the Aldi version are getting on here i might need to make a special trip there to find a copy! Those saying Aldi dupes - do they have a specific “brand name” to look out for? We don’t have an Aldi in town so I’ll need to make a special trip and don’t want to get there and find they do a few options and end up with the wrong one!

Can’t recommend St Eval candles etc enough! I will never buy a different brand again. They smell amazing. Sea salt is my fave.

PetPeter · 06/01/2020 22:20

The Aldi candles are shite and certainly not worth a special trip! No scent whatsoever unless you put your nose right over the pot

Foxton20 · 06/01/2020 22:21

It’s from Cornwall btw.

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 06/01/2020 22:23

Neals yard ‘balancing’ Diffuser Oil gives out the most amazing spa-like scent. Sells out all the time but worth grabbing when in stock. Miles better than candles from JM/diptyque/molten brown

cheeseandpineapple · 06/01/2020 22:32

I like certain Jo Malone ones because I like the fragrances. The smell from the candles are subtle but you can pick up on the aroma if you’re familiar with them. Agree Diptyque ones are v good if you’re going to splurge. But for a more reasonable price, long lasting and decent choice of scents, the Yankee ones in a glass jar are really good, different sizes and easy to plonk the lid back on when you want to stop burning it. The big ones last a long time. My daughter was burning one in her room earlier and it smelled lovely.

cheeseandpineapple · 06/01/2020 22:35

Yankee candles are currently on sale!

I'm really not keen on the JM candles anymore. I don't know if I've just gone nose blind, but I choose different scents each time and they don't seem to give off nearly as much of a fragrance as you'd expect.

A Yankee candle smells stronger!

DrKnickerbocker · 07/01/2020 00:01

Posted too soon.

I bought a nice candle from Asda for £4 the other day that actually smells really good.

I was also given a reed diffuser from Next for Christmas and that smells gorgeous too.

It's really trial and error with things like that. Expensive doesn't always me the best.

I've tried Baobab candles (was given one, had to untangle my eyebrows from my hairline when I realised how much they cost!) and, again, the smell wasn't great.

I like The White Company, Next, Yankee (home collection), Lumira and NEOM.
Will have to take a trip to Aldi too.

PeytonManning · 07/01/2020 01:28

If you have dogs/cats and are thinking of getting an EO diffuser, google which ones are safe.

Southmouth · 07/01/2020 06:55

Lots of mixed reviews on the Aldi dupes then! I’ll grab one in passing, and least I haven’t spent a fortune if I then don’t like it!

I am I’m shock at some costing £300 Shock

I think I may spend the money on another brand other than Jo Malone now then. I like pretty much all scents but just love them to smell really strong.

I usually have yankee and woodwick, and the odd next diffuser. I really like the prices chef diffuser in the kitchen but it just goes far too quick.

I picked up a Asda orange one for the toilet the other day for £2 and I must say it’s quite nice and refreshing and I can smell it as soon as I go near there even with the door shut!

Do got me some lovely candles and a diffuser from to maxx, I'm really impressed with them. Especially the diffuser as I can actually smell it.

honeylou42 · 07/01/2020 07:21

Haven't tried the candles, but had one of the diffusers which was rubbish 🙁

Lexplorer · 07/01/2020 07:29

As an old hippy I still prefer incense sticks which make the whole house smell exotic. Candles are hit and miss, TK Maxx is good for trialling different makes at a fraction of the rrp. I rely mainly on an aroma stone which heats up essential oils. Good quality bergamot, patchouli or geranium are my favourites.

beanaseireann · 07/01/2020 07:35

I think the 'throw' of the scent in a room is better with the Jo Malone single wick candle in a glass jar compared to the White Company single wick candle in a glass jar.
The Aldi dupes are really good. Aldi did a fab special limited edition Oud one, but sadly I can't get it anymore.

chipstickgirl · 07/01/2020 07:38

Agree with many others, JM is overrated and despite being given many over the years I wouldn't buy them for myself.

The Aldi ones I didn't like either I'm afraid.

However, really liking The White Company at the moment. The Seychelles reefs smell amazing, and the candles are good too.

memberofseven · 07/01/2020 07:52

Elemis diffusers are amazing. JM is nice but not worth the money. White co with a discount code is good. Aldi smell synthetic to me.

Ouch44 · 07/01/2020 08:22

I get Neom candles as they are made from natural wax and not parafin wax like JM, Aldi, etc.
They're expensive but I get one for Xmas and make it last all year. Paradin wax gives off toxic fumes.
TKMaxx has some bargainous Neom usually.

Nanasueathome · 07/01/2020 08:29

I love the Jo Malone candles and diffusers
Also buy Diptique
My daughter bought me a couple of Aldi ones and they made my head ache...not really very good at all

yogo · 07/01/2020 08:30

Aldi ones are rubbish, no scent at all unless you are standing over them.

They look similar to JM but not good at all.

Neom are my favourite, I love JM cologne but again the throw isn't good enough. I like a strong scent.

SisterAgatha · 07/01/2020 08:32

I don’t think they are very good. I couldn’t smell them very well even in the shop. I can smell a lush from 20 shops away.

yogo · 07/01/2020 08:37

The throw isn't good enough from the JM candles.

The cologne is great but wears off super fast.
