Are Jo Malone diffusers and candle as great as everyone says?

I have some Christmas money and would like to buy a nice candle or diffuser that I can actually smell around the house!

Over the years I’ve had so many different brand diffusers and candle but have never been able to justify spending the amount that the Jo Malone ones cost! Shock

I like a nice strong scent that I can notice as soon as I walk into the room.

If you've had a Jo Malone before how do you rate them? Or what would you recommend instead? Thanks

Cir Trudon Candles are far better than JM and worth splurging on . I never buy any candles elsewhere as everything else feels synthetic and less luxurious . I tried the new scent they launched Hupo and it filled my house with the most beautiful smell, we had visitors come over the holidays and they loved the smell. Ernesto is another firm favourite and one I always buy in cooler months.

BustedDreams · 07/01/2020 08:44

I don’t understand the posters advocating for Aldi candles. I’ve tried them. Hardly any discernible scent but when I do catch a whiff it’s rank. I think my nose must be broken 🤷‍♀️

I agree JM are expensive but Pomegranate Noir does smell nice in both candles and Reed diffusers.

Diptyque, Neom, Miller Harris, Woodwick and Diptyque for me.

As soon as Estee Lauder bought Jo Malone the quality nosedived.

@queenofarles I’ve just looked up Cire Trudon candles 😯 at the price. Are you really a Queen? Grin

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/01/2020 08:58

I don't understand posters saying they can't smell the Aldi ones because they are so strong the smell hits you even when they aren't lit! Aldi has the big ones which are presumably a dupe of the £350 ones but are £20.

Rose is my favourite, such a beautiful scent.

BarbarAnna · 07/01/2020 09:07

I have been a long time candle addict but recently discovered a £5 electric wax melter and Matty’s Soy Wax Melt bars. The scent is amazing and anyone who comes to my house comments on it. I got given loads of candles for Christmas as usual and now I am not sure when I will use them.

Whatnametoday5 · 07/01/2020 09:15

I’ve tried both jo malone & Diptyque - diptyque winner for me. Though both a lovely treat!

I’ve also tried the Aldi ones and agree they have do smell but I have a air purifier that goes into overdrive when I lit it so i guess its not as natural contents as the others so gave up with it as I was concerned what was in the wax content !

queenofarles · 07/01/2020 09:26

BustedDreams but of course Wink,
Cir Trudon are not cheap yes, but they last longer and the smell stays on and on, even when the candle is out, I have it In my hall and every time I pass by the scent is still there.

DaisyDando · 07/01/2020 09:52

Years and years ago, I had a JM candle and it was so delicious that I was convinced it was worth the money. I’ve never really replicated that and I had a Diptych (sp) candle for Christmas last year and was a bit disappointed. I don’t think I will ever have the money to spend on posh candles for myself again, but if I did, I would buy Milton Brown. I bought a lemony one from an outlet a year or two ago and it was the best thing ever. I currently have a nice Next candle and I would say that was worth the price.

caperplips · 07/01/2020 09:55

I posted earlier that I have been given a Jo Malone candle for Christmas each year for many years from my dd. This year I have a voucher and am switching to either Diptyque or Neom for a change.

I had the Aldi ones and do not rate them at all - they smell similar but not the same and they have a cheap chemical after-smell.

I bought a candle in M&S just before Christmas, it was reduced and is in a dark green glass and it smells of Christmas trees and it's really lovely and really does smell like a real tree! I was impressed. Went back for a second one and they were gone.

I have had some gorgeous Max Benjamin diffusers and candles in the past, I especially like the Amalfi range. My dd chose one for my birthday last year and chose grapefruit Confused I don't especially like it but have to pretend I do. I light it in the kitchen!

CakeWarrior · 07/01/2020 09:57

I refuse to buy JM now due to how they treated her. Estee Lauder purchased the company from her when she became ill, then booted her out and put a 5 year ban on her launching a new company. She now has launched her new company Jo Loves. I always buy from there now. I am having her products not the mass produced Estee Lauder ones trading on her name.

creamcheeseandlox · 07/01/2020 12:24

Lilyflame candles are great

joystir59 · 07/01/2020 12:30

I never light candles around the house. Too much of a fire hazard.

beanaseireann · 07/01/2020 12:32

caperplips
I have some lovely Max Benjamin candles too - I love the Enchanted Paths and Maldives as well as the Mimosa and Sweet Amber one. But they keep changing and bringing out new scents in Limited Editions which are then only for sale for a very short time Sad
Scent is soooo subjective.

magicstar1 · 07/01/2020 12:44

I don't like the JM candles, but I got a present of a Woodwick candle and it's amazing. I haven't even lit it yet, but the smell in the bedroom is gorgeous just by leaving the lid off it.
I use Rituals diffusers and candles normally, and they're lovely, but not as strong.

DurannieDeckingTheHalls · 07/01/2020 12:47

@CakeWarrior ... I've had similar thoughts of late, and suspect the Estée Lauder buyout is the reason the candles etc are not what they once were.

I've been a devotee of Pomegrante Noir cologne for many years now and struggle to find another scent I like... are there any Jo Loves ones that are similar do you know? I don't get to London often to smell them and am wary of an expensive mistake but am tempted to try one when my current bottle runs out.....

timetomoveon · 07/01/2020 12:51

Another one for Bath and Body Works 3 wick candles. You can buy them in the US and Asia if you know someone traveling there. There might also be a few on Amazon from different sellers.
Some of the scents are so strong I only light 1 of the wicks at a time. I think they will be about £25 in GBP.

damnthatanxiety · 07/01/2020 12:53

I just recently bought Aldi dupes of JM. They smell of exactly nothing. No smell. None. Nada. Ziltch. Absence of smell. So disappointing.

DrKnickerbocker · 07/01/2020 12:58

I've found a website that seem to stock Bath and Body Works candles and room sprays.
All very reasonable

notino.co.uk - can anyone advise whether they're legit?

damnthatanxiety · 07/01/2020 12:58

Going by the differing views on the strength of Aldi candles, I'm assuming their quality control is shite. Some may smell. Others don't smell at all. But I guess as they are only a few pounds, that's not surprising.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 07/01/2020 13:00

Why don't you try a local artisan maker? They use the same fragrance oils as the bigger luxury candle makers at a fraction of the price and they are hand poured rather than made on a factory production line.

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 07/01/2020 13:10

My lovely DSis gave me a Neom Well Being pod for Christmas. You simply add water and essential oils to it and plug it in and you can set it for 1, 2 or 3 hours, and it lights up too if you want. I've always been a fan of Neom products and have used the candles before, but the Pod is something else - the whole house smells wonderful (or stinks , if you ask DS Grin ). I prefer candles which use soy wax anyway, as I'm asthmatic, and I'm not a fan of Jo Malone since she was hijacked by Estee Lauder. Love Diptyque though.

Someone referred to the St Eval candles above, and I've been using the Winter Thyme tea lights over Christmas. They REEK, and not in a good way!!! My local gift shop sells them though, so I'm going to try some other flavours before giving up on the brand.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 07/01/2020 13:17

@22Ouch44 you are very wrong. There is no such thing as a natural vegetable (soy) wax. It is gmo grown, chemically extracted, bleached and deoderised, then hydrogenated. The soy wax manufacturers have done a good marketing job.

Many years ago, south Carolina state university produced a report saying that soy wax was the new messiah and paraffin wax was toxic and would kill us all. It later came out that this study was funded by American Agriculture and was debunked following peer reviewed studies in Europe.
Soy wax is now going out of fashion, mainly because of the effects of growing it on the environment. The destruction of the rainforests to grow soy beans has and continues to be devastating. The main soy wax producer in the world (Cargill) refuse to sign up to the moratorium in Brazil

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 07/01/2020 13:19

SugarPlum, thank you for posting that. I had no idea! I really am a marketer's dream, as DH keeps telling me Blush. I shall have to have a re-think then. Or give up candles altogether and just use my lovely new Wellbeing Pod!

BringMeTea · 07/01/2020 13:20

Jo Malone deffo NOT worth the money. Neom are excellent as mentioned and they have a sale on right now. I got 4 triple wicks. Very happy indeed!
