Are Jo Malone diffusers and candle as great as everyone says?

I have some Christmas money and would like to buy a nice candle or diffuser that I can actually smell around the house!

Over the years I’ve had so many different brand diffusers and candle but have never been able to justify spending the amount that the Jo Malone ones cost! Shock

I like a nice strong scent that I can notice as soon as I walk into the room.

If you've had a Jo Malone before how do you rate them? Or what would you recommend instead? Thanks

Aldi ones are incredible

The best scented candles in my opinion - and I always have scented candles on the go - are Lilyflame, get in waitrose / John Lewis, am currently burning the jasmine one and it's lush!!

Also just bought about five of the christmassy yankie candles for half price in the boots sale. Lovely scents, huge ones last for months......

I do like Jo Malone and find they last well but for sheer staying power the Laura Ashley ones with bits of twigs and shit in are the best in my experience.

I found a little company in Wiltshire www.secretgarden.uk.com I have the Cuban tobacco and Oak. It's beautiful. And very reasonable price too. Bought it in Salisbury.

As others have said, I agree Diptyque are far better scents than the JM candles. Diptyque have an incredible candle called Tubereuse or something along those lines. We have JM diffuser in our hallway and WC but I can't smell them- don't know if it's because I'm used to them maybe.

Fornasetti also do amazing scents in beautiful pots that you'd keep forever (depending on your taste), v v pricey though.

I've never smelt the Aldi ones but think I'll need to take a trip based on what others have said!

Shosha1 · 06/01/2020 17:43

I think you can find them in FB at that address

CooperLooper · 06/01/2020 17:47

I have a Jo Malone candle and have only ever lit it twice since I've had it because it was so expensive!!

The scent from them is quite subtle but very clean smelling.

Get yourself down to a TKMaxx or HomeSense, they stock a range of beautiful candles called Sand + Fog, about £12 for a huge 3-wick candle and they're my fave. They do a honey tobacco one and it's amaaaaazing x

try bath and bodyworks - not sure where you are, but this group buys and brings to UK from the USA

you're looking around £20 ish for a 3 wick candle, some are so strong I have to 'dilute' with some plain wax paraffin pellets....

Impatientwino · 06/01/2020 20:58

I have a JM pomegranate noir diffuser in my living room - was a Christmas gift and it smells delicious. I've had lots of their candles before and always liked them.

I also like the white company candles as they burn evenly and the smell carries well.

The Lime and Bay white company one is quite powerful unlit just with the lid off!

TreacherousPissFlap · 06/01/2020 21:08

I've had them and enjoyed them, but really struggled to justify the expense.
At the moment we're using Price's candles and reed diffusers as we have smelly dogs and need something a little more robust Hmm

Bluewavescrashing · 06/01/2020 21:11

The last candle I bought was a large jar gingerbread one from Home Bargains. Cost £2.99 and smells amazing, throws the scent well. Bargain!

OverByYer · 06/01/2020 21:14

I always buy a White Company Christmas candle every year and that smells lovely.
I also like ‘Beefayre’ candles, British made.
The Aldi candles smell very chemical to me , not a fan.

Nicest reed diffuser that I have had is from La Fragonard but only as a treat

NotNowNoreen · 06/01/2020 21:15

I was given a £40 voucher for Jo Malone one Christmas. I bought a red roses diffuser as its my favourite scent. I had to add mo ey to the £40. Could only smell it if I stood next to it. Complete waste of money.

Patsypie · 06/01/2020 21:18

I used to love Diptyque but the quality has taken a nosedive. And they discontinued their Clove! The Geodesis is better and half the price.

Isnappedandsharted · 06/01/2020 21:20

Get a water diffuser with good quality essential oils instead.

DurannieDeckingTheHalls · 06/01/2020 21:35

I'm a big fan of Pomegranate Noir cologne from Jo Malone... I keep trying other perfumes but always come back to it as i,I've the scent, I think it suits me and it lasts well... also like the bar soap.

That's said, I think the candles are no better than many cheaper brands and the diffusers are downright inferior! I moved house last year and was lucky enough to receive several scented candles and diffusers as new house gifts, Jo Malone amongst them....my favourite candle was a Neom Tranquility Intensive one and my favourite diffuser is a Skye Candles Oriental Lily which I've since bought for myself... at £20 considerably cheaper than JM!

DurannieDeckingTheHalls · 06/01/2020 21:36
  • I love the scent
GoodMPreply · 06/01/2020 21:37

A vote for Neom candles here!! Lovely scents and often do good offers

fedup21 · 06/01/2020 21:43

I like the Next ones. I can’t believe some of the JM candles are £300!!

Alyic · 06/01/2020 21:44

I much prefer The White Company candles etc to Jo Malone

AlexaKimbo · 06/01/2020 21:45

Diptyque Baies is lovely.
St Eval is another brand I buy quite regularly, I really like Tranquility. Have tried a couple of the other scents but Tranquility is my favourite.
Had a lovely one from Space NK over Christmas, think it was called Shimmering Spice.

Izzybuzzybuzzybees · 06/01/2020 21:49

I’ve just recently started getting into other brands of candles after being a Yankee lover.

I love molton brown and neom and have repurchased both. I did buy a Jo Malone candle (also the pomegranate one!) but it’s a lot teenier than I expected so no doubt won’t be much use!

SaigonSaigon · 06/01/2020 21:58

I treated myself to a JM candle last year, nearly £50. Not worth the money. The scent is far too subtle for the price.

I have the Aldi dupes in this house. £4 a pop. They are great value for money. Look good, smell good.
