What are the common themes on your areas local Facebook page?

I am actually just curious. Our local area Facebook page just seems to have certain themes and issues that rile up the locals. The views on there are certainly not shared by DH and I. Some of them are so bad it is actually encouraging us to move Shock. The common stuff is:

-Missing cats. The local cats are forever disappearing it seems
-Found cats, trying to trace owners
-Missing wheelie bins (hopefully not connected to cats)

  • Warnings about strangers or (and this really pisses me off) people who look 'foreign' and suspicious in the area
  • The local bird life - there was a raging debate recently about magpies

And the stuff the local people complain about:

-Fireworks - for some reason they start in September around here and go on inexplicably all the way to New Year,
-The local councils management of grass verges and general grass area maintenance
-Virgin Media
-Dog mess - including posting videos of dog walkers failing to pick up after their dogs
-Parking. Especially pavement parking.

I am not asking for the locations, as that is pretty outing, but I am just interested in whethers others are like ours or have as many missing cats or different things that rile up the locals.

OP - ours sounds exactly like yours, but instead of magpies it's pigeons! Other than that it sounded like we live in the same place!

limpingparrot · 27/10/2019 16:16

Ours is lost cats and the same 3 dogs escaping
Asking for tradesmen
Asking for cleaners
And generally really great stuff being given away !
And we have a very persistent doorstep scammer as well

As if on cue, a massive essay regarding the controversial roundabout has appeared complete with over a hundred replies. Was it one of you?!

Sparklingbrook · 27/10/2019 17:02

Here's a great post from the Spotted page of one of my local towns-

“Please post : Just a heads up to the residents of XYZ. Next Saturday at around 8pm I will be letting some fireworks off. I hope this doesn't upset your dogs, cats, rabbits, children, nana, grandads, brothers, sisters or anybody else that may live in/around your household 😊. However if it does please feel free to write a shitty post up on spotted. I wont read it tho as I will be lighting up the town

Dogs that have run off.
Dogs that have been found
Badly parked cars
Name and shame photos of wrong doings which always result in a 200 message slanging match.

KeeperofthePeace · 27/10/2019 17:40

Where did people complain before social media? 😊

OP posts:
PotterHead1985 · 27/10/2019 17:47

@KeeperofthePeace water coolers in work and before that round the local water pump Grin

Mrsjayy · 27/10/2019 17:50

People used to stand out in the street and gossip 😀

KeeperofthePeace · 27/10/2019 17:51

Haha! Yes!

Anyone know what those sirens are for?
Dog shit.
Anyone know the number / name of the local Hermes delivery driver?
Dodgy looking 'Asians' driving around.
Missing / found cats.
Missing / found dogs.
Anyone want to buy this stained/ ugly shit thing that only has three core components missing?
From October, complaining about fireworks.
In the summer, complaining about people taking their dogs out for walks in the heat.
General sanctimony.
General virtue signalling.

bestbefore · 27/10/2019 17:56

I just left one of our groups as it was full of some woman posting stuff about her tarot readings...I don't believe in them and she posted every day with some special offer or other...

Gingerkittykat · 27/10/2019 18:02

Missing and dead cats.
Photos of cats who have been in someone's garden asking if it is missing.
Complaints about neighbours feeding cats.
Pictures of local legend Tesco cat.
Teenagers stealing wheelie bins and setting them on fire.
Sadly recently a few videos of people who I assume are on spice acting erratically on the high street.
Complaints about the high street being full of bookies and charity shops.
Complaints about parking charges.

Gingerkittykat · 27/10/2019 18:05

Oh and complaints about "Eastern Europeans or Turkish men" approaching kids on a bit of green land while they went to school. I thought it was scaremongering but it turned out a man really had been approaching kids after a 10 year old disclosed he had been hiding behind the shops and tried to lure her to the woods.

The man was white Scottish, was charged but run out of the village by vigilante mobs, not that I was sad to see him go.

The racism was out in force there.

Ariela · 27/10/2019 18:08

Ours seems to be quite well moderated, so if there is a missing cat or dog, only one post appears about it, and anyone trying to repost without looking just gets tagged.
Also free stuff isn't allowed they get tagged in a post on which other local sites do the free stuff. They're also hot on advertising only once a month on 1st or 15th so no other adverts.

Topics of note include
Planning application for local pizza takeaway (not a chance as it's on a dangerous corner and no parking)
Relocating the library to form a new village hub
The phasing of the traffic lights at the cross roads
Lots of asking for recommendations and praise for local businesses, last night top spot went to the the village Italian restaurant for being packed to the rafters last night both prior to & post the village fireworks, all the food served up on time and a merry night had by all.
Scam warnings.
Muddy footpaths.
Temporary outages of broadband (usually Virgin) in various corners of the village.

TabithasMumCaroline · 27/10/2019 18:08

Bears in gardens (with photos)
Off leash dogs
Bears euthanized because of off leash dogs
Arguments about whether to report bears in gardens
Tourists driving on paths (with photos)
Garbage left out (with photos)
Bears euthanized because they got in the garbage left out
Arguments about newly approved housing
Arguments about whether people should even live here because it really belongs to the wildlife (but oddly no one offers to leave, just want to stop more housing)
Van-lifers living behind the supermarket
Demands for free campsites for van lifers living behind supermarket
Local nut job complaining about literally everything and threatening to stand for mayor
Driving conditions
Bears killed on highway
Wildlife overpasses
Fencing
Bears climbing fencing
Does anyone know where the elk herd is, I have visitors that want to see them
Elk jam/ bear jam on the parkway

Nonnymum · 27/10/2019 18:14

Missing cats
Found cats
Car break ins
Fireworks
What is that strange noise?
Lost toys
Unwanted items free to anyone who can collect
Parking

It seems as though all areas are the same!

SoMuchToBits · 27/10/2019 18:33

Ours seems to have stuff about wind chimes and bears. Or at least those are the local "in jokes" on the page.

Other than that, lots of asking for recommendations and just lately eggs have been a theme.

SoMuchToBits · 27/10/2019 18:34

Oh, and Hermes throwing parcels over fences/hiding them in bins.

CanoeDoYouThinkYouAre · 27/10/2019 18:39

Tabitha I feel very sorry for the bears.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 27/10/2019 18:54

I love ours, never fails to make me laugh!
Always someone kicking off about something Grin
People whinging about their takeaway being shit is one and naming and shaming them
(Even though from the pic it can't be that bad as they've eaten most of the fucker Grin )
Cue slanging match in comments, people saying they love it there and then the takeaway owner finding the thread and weighing in lol
Parking threads as well. People parking like a dick is always entertaining.
Or kids on bikes looking "shifty" keep your eyes open posts

Loveislandaddict · 27/10/2019 18:57

Dogs found wandering the street
Local crime-wave and anti-social behaviour (in a previously fairly crime-free area)
All the new developments

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 27/10/2019 18:59

Speeding! Where I live is the home planet of the Arsehole Speeding Wanker™️

TwattingDog · 27/10/2019 19:19

Just remembered my favourite one this summer.

Local running club (hashing) leave markers on their running route using a small handful of flour in various shapes to direct runners.

Locals start flapping about dog thieves marking homes. (yeah, because the piles along the public footpath through the woods demonstrate this perfectly).

One particular beauty pipes up that her husband is a police officer and he can confirm this is a national problem and the dognappers are indeed in town. 🙄

Whole world goes mad. Proper hysteria on Fb.

A quick Fb check shows her hubbie joined the police 4 days before. 😂

Me, ex cop, points out the bullshit being posted, link them to the hashing event, and show photos of the symbols.

That is TWO WEEKS worth of Fb back and forth.

grandmasterstitch · 27/10/2019 20:26

Dog poo, the weather (we even have a separate group for winter road conditions) and sheep/cows on the loose/distressed/dead in the field (or sleeping as is often the case)

SayrraT · 27/10/2019 20:55

Ours is quite nice I think.

  1. Posts about a stray ginger cat
  2. The types of trains (and times) that will be passing especially steam trains
  3. Thanking people for tending to the village flower pots
  4. Cows escaping (but everyone is nice about it, not complaints)
