What are the common themes on your areas local Facebook page?

I am actually just curious. Our local area Facebook page just seems to have certain themes and issues that rile up the locals. The views on there are certainly not shared by DH and I. Some of them are so bad it is actually encouraging us to move Shock. The common stuff is:

-Missing cats. The local cats are forever disappearing it seems
-Found cats, trying to trace owners
-Missing wheelie bins (hopefully not connected to cats)

  • Warnings about strangers or (and this really pisses me off) people who look 'foreign' and suspicious in the area
  • The local bird life - there was a raging debate recently about magpies

And the stuff the local people complain about:

-Fireworks - for some reason they start in September around here and go on inexplicably all the way to New Year,
-The local councils management of grass verges and general grass area maintenance
-Virgin Media
-Dog mess - including posting videos of dog walkers failing to pick up after their dogs
-Parking. Especially pavement parking.

I am not asking for the locations, as that is pretty outing, but I am just interested in whethers others are like ours or have as many missing cats or different things that rile up the locals.

Ours had someone asking when the new B&M and Lidl was opening.,, the plans have only just gone up and the previous building is still standing on the site so I'm guessing it'll be a while!

ParkheadParadise · 27/10/2019 01:00

Lost cats/dogs found cats/dogs.
Asking best place for nails and make-up (daily)
Kids hanging around the local park (with haircolour/jacket)
Any accident (always with pictures )
Best takeaway

1point21gigawatts · 27/10/2019 01:02

There's a very funny theme going on at the moment involving a recalcitrant peacock which seems to have escaped from a nearby village and taken up residence in our village. It's owners CBA to collect it and it appears to be quite grumpy. People keep posting about it and just last week someone misquoted the Hot Fuzz classic "no luck with them peacocks then?" To which someone replied "it's just the one peacock actually!" You probably had to be there, but I thought it was hilarious.

Other than that.... missing cats, crap driving on the school run, and a recent spate of car thefts on the local estate, with CCTV!!

Wildthyme · 27/10/2019 01:02

Teens vaping in the park.
Seagulls.
People riding their bike at 5am.
Fly tipping.
Dogs barking. Someone actually got fined £1000 because their dog barked a lot. Massive divide between pro dog and anti dog. It's worse than Brexit.
Corrupt council.
Metro breakdowns.

tryingforminime · 27/10/2019 01:04

Stones thrown at buses.
Gay men being caught at it in a local park.
Numerous missing cats.
Bullying school children with threats from the victims parent.

Brexit is huge on my local page

Heatherjayne1972 · 27/10/2019 06:12

Recommendations for local takeaways / builders/plumbers etc
Posts about where one can buy shoes/uniforms/ etc
warnings against going to various businesses
Lost animals
Moaning about neighbours noise/parking/ dogs barking / unfair parking tickets etc etc
Moaning about fireworks
Moaning about virgin services ( not sure why only them Other suppliers rarely mentioned)

Currently have a con artist asking for free stuff.

Ilikewinter · 27/10/2019 06:29

Dogs that have escaped
Missing cats
Why hasnt my wheelie bin been emptied
Best takeaway
Brexit anger against local labour MP which keep getting deleted, then new threads about free speech!
Yesterdays was all about pictures of flooded roads.

ifigoup · 27/10/2019 06:41

Dog poo

Pavement parking

Homeless people congregating

Youths seen out after dark

Why has “our” PCSO been moved to a different area?

How can the local garden centre which has a legendary Christmas grotto whose slots are always sold out months in advance justify putting its prices up so much when some people have multiple children and it’s soooo unfair to price them out of seeing Santa?

Suggestions for alternative grottoes (spoiler: there are many)

Identical recommendations weekly for swimming lessons, cake makers, wedding hair, etc.

ExpletiveDEVILighted · 27/10/2019 06:56

Parking, parking charges, roadworks, car accidents, suspicious white vans driving slowly round residential areas, fly tipping.

yearinyearout · 27/10/2019 06:59

Fly tipping is a major issue round here. Also missing cats/dogs, the debate about location of the new medical centre, lack of public toilets, nighttime thieves that go round stealing from cars, and teenagers breaking shop windows.

squashyhat · 27/10/2019 07:06

The evils or otherwise of 5g, how useless or otherwise the village warden is, when is the village pub due to reopen, when is the new Thai restaurant due to open, recommendations for nannies, electricians, gardeners, etc. I live in a bit of a 1st world problem area Grin

yearinyearout · 27/10/2019 07:06

Oh yes I'd forgotten about the constant requests for recommendations, hair salons, plumbers, best Sunday lunch etc. On every single one you just get dozens of different suggestions depending on who is related to who and trying to promote their business, so it's pointless.

Mightywease · 27/10/2019 07:08

Most of what has been mentioned here ie lost cats, potholes, rubbish high street fireworks, the current state of the town's redevelopment, Brexit occasionally

Plus can anyone make 85 cupcakes that look like Elsa riding a unicorn into Aasgard by Tomorrow!!!!!

The exclamation marks are always important.

MayorPrentiss · 27/10/2019 07:08

Parking
Green belt development
Climate change - there are a handful of keyboard warriors who not only deny climate change, but also want to enlighten the local community about the fact it's all a big conspiracy. Anything remotely related to the environment is instantly spammed full of links about renewable energy cartels and the fact Greta Thunberg is a puppet and a victim of child abuse.
Missing cats
Traffic

53rdWay · 27/10/2019 07:08

Cows/sheep loose on the road
Parking
Takeaway recommendations
“Does anyone know a Mr B Wellypants, I got his parcel by mistake” (this always gets about 15-20 replies: “Katie Wellypants is this your dad???” “Think he used to live above the hairdresser, moved about ten years ago” before someone tags the right person)
“FOUND CAT found this poor thing scavenging for food he’s starving” above photo of massive local Six-Dinner Sid
Strange people seen looking around suspiciously
Rambling incoherent nostalgia.

Noroof · 27/10/2019 07:13

Run over cats and then a barrage of abuse threatening the tucker who ran it over. Em...its a really busy road and not suitable for cats so why keep having them? They must be on cat 5 by now

SnuggyBuggy · 27/10/2019 07:17

We have a dodgy man in a van who gets photographed now and then. Eventually the comments use the word gypsy and get deleted.

We also have a gang of feral yoof who run red lights on their bikes.

ExpletiveDEVILighted · 27/10/2019 07:18

Missing/found cats, a person who pops up on every missing/found cat post with reams of helpful advice about reuniting cats with their owners, weary posts from the local vet saying nearly all the found cats brought into them for chip scanning turn out to be registered within about 50m of where they were picked up.

Bellasblankexpression · 27/10/2019 07:25

I only belong to the neighbourhood watch page, so it tends to be incidents and accidents. It’s actually been pretty useful at catching criminals, as the organisers work with the police.
But we also get some random moans at the other end of the scale - teenagers being teenagers, complaining about litter (when actually it’s pretty clean), bemoaning the fact that it used to be great round here and has now gone to pot, and my favourite - asking for shop opening times when it is definitely quicker and easier to google

Bobthefisherghoulswife · 27/10/2019 07:31

I live on a mid sized estate and we have a Facebook page for some reason...
Pretty much everything has been mentioned by others:

Parking, there seems to be a new post at least twice a day moaning about someone's car.
Driving in the estate. Speed mainly.
Children playing in the road (they really like the blind bend)
Dogs and oddly rabbits on the loose.
Children knocking on people's doors.

icebearforpresident · 27/10/2019 07:33

Missing cats
Missing chickens
Hermes deliveries not turning up
‘Lock your doors, there’s a bloke in a hoodie around X street’ (almost always a bloke just passing by)
‘I emailed Lidl/Aldi/Iceland today to ask them to build a store here’ followed by a load of responses about why they won’t build a store here and why, if they did, it would actually make the town centre worse not better. These posts almost always descend into personal arguments and are actually pretty entertaining (they’re the only reason I’m still on there to be honest!)

superram · 27/10/2019 07:34

Asking recommendations for washer fixer-always the same man-try searching first.
Virgin being down-I think it’s fine.
‘Lost’ cats-stop feeding the little toe rage and they will go home-they are not lost, just greedy.
Suspicious people on ring doorbells.
Towers (they will be horrendous) for housing.

We do a great reduce, recycling page that is great (and not moany).

SingingLily · 27/10/2019 07:35

Lots of messages about the dangerous tree roots in the local bridle paths as well as requests for help ripping out the weeds along the canal towpath.

My favourite, though, is the not-infrequent plea, always from the same person: "Has anyone seen my drone? It went missing three days ago. Could be in someone's garden or shed."

Yeah right 😂. The whole village probably knows where the drone is but are not saying. They're sick of it buzzing over their gardens and being a nuisance, as well as illegally operated. They're just having a little break from it.

leckford · 27/10/2019 07:36

Winchester FB - l don’t live there but fairly close
Students
Students drunk and making too much noise
Students turning over bins when drunk
People stealing bikes
People come in from elsewhere to rob shoppers
because of the Xmas market starting soon

AuntieMarys · 27/10/2019 07:36

Immigrants blamed for everything.
Missing cats and dogs galore.
Hang paedophiles and if you don't support Predator exposure, you must be a nonce.
Late buses.
Hot tub lodge recommendations
