How many of your friends & family smoke?

I notice at work ( The Range) that quite a few people go out for a fag in their break & I got to thinking that apart from colleagues, I don’t think I know anyone who smokes. I never have & I hate it. Was really shocked at one of our managers who had a near fatal heart attack last year but was still lighting up the other day. Is smoking generally decreasing?

One family member and two friends currently smoke regularly and two are social smokers. I’m amongst the crowd of ex smokers but two of us vape. Ten years ago I knew a lot more ‘social’ smokers which in reality just meant that they didn’t buy them themselves.

I see far fewer smokers in my hometown. I rarely see people smoking in the street nowadays

6 of us quit together - 3 months this week 😊

@thecatneuterer they didn't start as young professionals, they started as stupid teenagers and then got addicted.

Quite a lot of younger people I know smoke, it seems to be de rigeur in certain circles to smoke roll ups.

A female relative of mine smokes, she is in her late thirties, suffered fertility issues and mc and smoked like a train throughout. Smokes in public when pushing the pram. It looks absolutely dreadful, if I'm honest. I know this sounds pretty snobby, I get that she struggles with the addiction, but as an otherwise intelligent and sensible woman I don't know why she doesn't at least hide it a bit and do it away from the children

My partner's parents are both heavy smokers. She's had various cancers and he's semi-paralysed after a stroke in his early 60s. They also have really shitty teeth. Obviously smoking might not have played a part in their health issues but it probably hasn't helped. They still smoke.
My partner has never smoked however whenever he has a heavy cold, it invariably goes down onto his chest & he needs antibiotics.
Some of my friends used to smoke but all gave up around mid-20s when they became financially savvy. My grandmother was the only smoker in my family - always had a fag in her mouth - but lived til 92.

I know a lot of smokers. Grandparents, dad, step mom, brother, cousins, friends, oh is a social smoker. I smoke. My mom is so against smoking, she was very upset when she found out both my brother and I do.

Yeah none here either. I feel like vaping will take over soon. Which is worrying really because they didnt think there was an issue with smoking until years later. Who knows the long term effects vaping may have.

ThePolishWombat · 20/08/2019 11:53

I think it is decreasing.
I’ve smoked on and off since I was about 14 Blush Much less since having DCs - mostly only if I’ve been drinking.
My mum is a regular smoker - probably 10-15 a day. She works for a small business, and I know 2 of her colleagues also smoke.
My 3 closest friends all smoke.
My sister smokes.
But up until a few years ago, literally every adult member of my family smoked. Most have stopped due to health concerns in the last 10 years though.

iklboo · 20/08/2019 11:54

It's probably easier to list who doesn't Sad

I never have (child of Olympic level smokers), DH gave up nearly 20 years ago so longer smoke free than a smoker - 16 to 22.

No one in my family. My husband is a heavy smoker and lots of his friends and colleagues are too. It’s a catering/chef thing. All rollies though. I don’t know anyone that smokes tailored cigs.

Anerak · 20/08/2019 12:07

I don't know anyone who smokes, thank goodness. Can't imagine why anyone would

mydogisthebest · 20/08/2019 12:08

No one in my family or friends smokes and none never have except my dad. He stopped though when my mum was expecting me. He became so anti smoking and frightened me so much about the dangers that I have never even taken one puff of a cigarette!

I thought it was dying out but having fairly recently moved I see that a lot of my youngish neighbours (20's and 30's) all smoke. Three neighbours were pregnant last year and all smoked throughout their pregnancies which I found awful. Oh and they all always seem to have a can of energy drink in their hand but that's a whole different thread!
