How many of your friends & family smoke?

I notice at work ( The Range) that quite a few people go out for a fag in their break & I got to thinking that apart from colleagues, I don’t think I know anyone who smokes. I never have & I hate it. Was really shocked at one of our managers who had a near fatal heart attack last year but was still lighting up the other day. Is smoking generally decreasing?

Very few... None of my friends, rare amongst school mums & no relatives my age or younger... but 1 aunt and uncle do.... Its killing both of them but they carry on regardless.
Ever reducing number at work except for certain group of contractors.
Strangely we had a rare night out in a city last night and commented on how many younger women were smoking/vaping.

BarrenFieldofFucks · 18/08/2019 20:53

No family members, and no friends bar two (a couple) who have recently restarted after 20years odd not smoking. They are definitely the odd ones out

weegiemum · 18/08/2019 20:54

To my disgust and despair, dd1 (19) and ds (17) both smoke occasionally. Dh is a doctor and has given them all the talks to no effect. Dd2 (15) thinks it's disgusting!

My dad used to have the occasional cigar on special occasions (and to keep the bugs away when he was fishing) but gave up a few years ago.

I know a few local friends who smoke (never in my house) but really very few compared to 10 years ago. I live in quite a deprived area and there's loads of vaping.

Ffsnosexallowed · 18/08/2019 20:55

One work colleague has the rare one on a night out, one friend's son smokes. I stopped about 5 years ago.

Vasya · 18/08/2019 20:56

My dad has the odd cigar but other than that I can't think of anyone!

YouLookGood · 18/08/2019 20:58

It’s such a shame that as a society we have done so well reducing the numbers of smokers but now we have the problem of vaping.

chachaboom · 18/08/2019 21:01

Regretfully, my mother, brother, BIL, MIL (and all her mates), SIL, 1 friend vapes. Nobody in work that I know.
My sister, father, FIL and gran gave up years ago.

Me, DH , other sibling and other friends never smoked.

Tends to be poorer/uneducated people round here who smoke (ironic). MIL smells as does her car and house. Mother smokes in the garden only now so their house is a lot better but I can't wait until the day it's banned.

Herefortheduration · 18/08/2019 21:02

No one in my family smokes; parents, siblings etc. none at all. Only one person at work smoked but he left about 2 months ago.

My ds (17) has a couple of friends who smoke but he says most think it's pointless and expensive.

LoveGrowsWhere · 18/08/2019 21:03

Know a few ex-smokers. Only current smoker is BIL.

Fudgenugget · 18/08/2019 21:04

In my grade, at my station area, three people out of about 80. I don't know of any vapers on my area.

I never took it up because when I was about 12 my dgf died of lung cancer after being a heavy smoker. I never liked the smell either.

happytobemrsg · 18/08/2019 21:05

No one in my actual blood family smokes. No one smokes in my DH’s family either (they are crazy against it). My 2 BILs smoke - never inside the house.

happytobemrsg · 18/08/2019 21:06

In my team at work (5 people) only one smokes

Superlooper · 18/08/2019 21:09

None of my close family/friends are smokers but quite a few of my colleagues smoke.

Mummyshark2018 · 18/08/2019 21:12

I have a smoke now and again, never in work though, just socially with friends over a glass of wine. Of my immediate family (parents, in laws, siblings etc) only 3 smoke regularly.

Ulverstonian · 18/08/2019 21:12

I’m surprised at the amount of youngsters who smoke at work, some are under 20. That’s the largest demographic I know of who smoke. I only know of 2 colleagues who are over 30 that smoke.

15% of the population sole and another 5% vape, so 1 in 5 people smoke or vape.

YourVagesty · 18/08/2019 21:21

No one in my immediately family that I can think of. None of my friends either, although I live in quite a hippy area so people around here do tend to smoke a joint of a Friday evening etc. That's fairly common in these parts.

YourVagesty · 18/08/2019 21:23

Interesting that a few people on this thread have mentioned younger people smoking. I would've thought that they'd be the last ones to take it up.

I wonder if that's part of the 90s trend coming back in? I was a teenager in the 90s and everybody smoked. It's part of the 'look' of the decade.

NeverSayFreelance · 18/08/2019 21:24

One of my uncles and his wife do. He got mouth cancer. Survived though.

I have a couple of friends who did but no one in my close friend group.

That's it really. Nobody in my very large office smokes.

SpeedyShutter · 18/08/2019 21:24

I used to be the only non smoker in my family (apart from the children, obvs). Now only my mum, 2 siblings and one s.i.l. on my side and b.i.l. and s.i.l. on dh's side smoke. They all stopped for health reasons and my step-dad died of lung cancer caused by smoking.

YesQueen · 18/08/2019 21:28

I vape. A lot of my colleagues smoke or vape (or both)

Gingerkittykat · 18/08/2019 21:28

I'm shocked at the number of people who know no smokers.

I grew up in a rough area where it was totally normal to smoke when you hit your teens. We could buy 10 cigarettes for £1 dinner money and split the cost with a friend or sell half for 20p each.

Almost every adult I knew growing up smoked.

In different circles varying amounts of people smoke. When I'm with the people I grew up with almost everyone smokes still. At work around 1/3 smoke or vape, including one boss.

I smoke, thankfully my DC don't. I'm shocked to see how many teenagers still smoke, I would have thought it would be totally outside their budget these days.

I am always disgusted when I visit the hospital in Edinburgh and see the new amputees with bandages still on their legs outside in a huddle of wheelchairs smoking. It happens every single visit, you would think that would be a major wake up call.

Holymolymackerel · 18/08/2019 21:35

Both my parents smoked. My ddad died of cancer aged 58, my mum still smokes.

My grandad smoked too up til his smoking related death aged 77.

I have never smoked but was a passive smoker until I left home at 25.

My dbrother has never smoked.

I suffer from recurrent chest infections even now and have had pneumonia.

I absolutely hate it.

I have recently found out my nephew who is 18 is a smoker. I and his dad are devastated.

Pipandmum · 18/08/2019 21:37

None

Dandelion1993 · 18/08/2019 21:38

Loads of my family. Do. My parents, aunts uncles. I used to before having children.

It's their choice and their problems if anything arises from it.

siriusblackthemischieviouscat · 18/08/2019 21:41

Very few now.

Mums generation and above all did. Mum has just given up.

Of my generation in my family on mums side only a few cousins but the majority of us don't. On dads side I think all the cousins smoke (I don't really have any contact with them so not sure).

I'm an anti smoker so have very few friends who smoke. A few but not many.
