How many of your friends & family smoke?

I notice at work ( The Range) that quite a few people go out for a fag in their break & I got to thinking that apart from colleagues, I don’t think I know anyone who smokes. I never have & I hate it. Was really shocked at one of our managers who had a near fatal heart attack last year but was still lighting up the other day. Is smoking generally decreasing?

It must have been really smelly or was it just normal background smell?

It was a sort of normal background smell, though walking into a pub could make your eyes water ! And the annoying way that your clothes picked it up just by travelling home :(

Oddly, I didn’t mind the smell of pipes - our next door neighbour had one constantly jammed into the side of his mouth and it only struck me recently that I can’t remember when I last saw one - or cigars .

AuntieMarys · 18/08/2019 19:57

An in law.
We don't see them very often.
I hate smoking.

thatonesmine · 18/08/2019 19:58

None but it has not always been thus. My mother, MIL and SIL all died of conditions directly caused by smoking and it was seeing SIL's awful death from throat cancer that gave me the push to quit. She was only a year older than me.

Yogagirl123 · 18/08/2019 19:59

No one I know smokes.

Youngandfree · 18/08/2019 19:59

None of my friends. My brother does. And a few cousins I think when being social. I have never even tried one 🤢

blindedbytiredness · 18/08/2019 20:03

We have 45 people in my office, 4 of which smoke (and I sit next to one, yay!) other than that the only other people I know are DP's mum and step dad, his dad and I assume other members of his family but not 100% sure.
My parents never smoked but I tried it a few times when younger whereas DP grew up with parents smoking in the house (they don't anymore thank god) but has never even tried one puff as he hates it so much.

Also none although when I was at university I knew a handful that smoked.

I honestly think if I went to someone’s house and they had an ash tray out of I saw a packet of cigarettes I’d be really shocked. I feel like it’s not at all mainstream anymore but I think the percentage that smoke is still not insignificant despite me not knowing any of them.

Bumbags · 18/08/2019 20:08

None and I wouldn’t be friends with them if they did.

MondeoFan · 18/08/2019 20:08

No immediate family or colleagues
EXH still does
Next door neighbour does

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/08/2019 20:09

A couple of friends. No one I actually see lighting up.

But I have three ds at uni, they say most of their friends smoke. I was astonished, I thought the youngsters weren’t smoking.

Jsmith99 · 18/08/2019 20:09

Very few. Almost everyone I know who smoked has now either quit completely or switched to vaping. It’s staggering how smoking has become de-normalised since the workplace ban came in.

Chocolate35 · 18/08/2019 20:14

It’s definitely declining. I used to know a lot of smokers, mostly my age or older (I’m in my late 30’s). Most of them have given up because of health problems and/or the insane price of a pack of cigarettes.

OddBoots · 18/08/2019 20:14

None of my family. Some of my friends do but thinking about it they are all people who grew up in other parts of Europe, maybe there are places where it is more popular than in the UK.

sheshootssheimplores · 18/08/2019 20:15

No one I am close friends with, no one in my family.

iVampire · 18/08/2019 20:18

I can’t think of anyone in family (except very distant cousins, who I see about once a decade at gatherings like funerals)

No friends, and only a couple of acquaintances (parents of DC’s school friends)

What %age of UK population are smokers these days?

EmmiJay · 18/08/2019 20:19

I do (menthols) and have done for about 10yrs. I'll quit if I make it to 80yrs old. My stepfather also does occasionally but thats it.

megletthesecond · 18/08/2019 20:21

No one.

There's LOADS of young smokers where I work though (different company, same building). They all file out for fag breaks every couple of hours, it's like a nightclub Confused.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/08/2019 20:24

I used to know lots of smokers. Now there's just 1 left (a woman)- all the others have stopped. I imagine a few of those do smoke occasionally on nights out. I know lots of vapers though!

poolblack · 18/08/2019 20:24

I get the addiction but I don't get why you would want to go outside in all weathers just to smoke

You don't really 'get' the addiction at all then.

Sadie789 · 18/08/2019 20:30

I used to be the only one who didn’t smoke! Now, apart from one group of female friends (who are really friends of my SIL) everyone has given up.

My parents both smoked a lot when I was growing up (and now both have smoking related illnesses) and in my teens and 20s all my friends smoked. When they brought in the smoking ban I was always left sitting with the coats and bags while everyone else went out for a smoke.

At work some people vape but there aren’t any smokers.

I think it’s a good development that people have moved away from smoking. I’ve always absolutely hated it and my parents ill health only makes me hate it more now.

I would probably now actively avoid a new friendship (or relationship) with a smoker as i’d feel we are very different people.

Mrsjayy · 18/08/2019 20:34

At 1 time most of the people I knew smoked me and Dh included now maybe 4 smokers.

Crunchymum · 18/08/2019 20:36

One of four siblings smoke, no close friends do.

My parents and myself and many friends are ex smokers.

DP smokes, so do both his parents Shock

A few work colleagues do. Most don't.

I would say I know mainly ex smokers as opposed to non smokers.

anothernotherone · 18/08/2019 20:43

Only my brother in law. It killed my mother in law. No friends, no other family.

I have colleagues who smoke though, from colleagues it doesn't bother me as long as they do it outdoors, away from non smokers, and crucially don't take the piss by believing that they are entitled to twice as many breaks as non smokers.

In this job nobody takes the piss but I've had a previous job where the line manager smoked and took the smokers with her on several extra 15 minute breaks and expected non smokers to cover without it ever being reciprocated - non smokers therefore worked 45 minutes per shift more than smokers, which adds up to about 175 extra hours or over four full weeks over the year! It was a big factor in my decision to leave that job.

vampirethriller · 18/08/2019 20:45

My dad, one brother, my best friend, my ex.
