How many of your friends & family smoke?

I notice at work ( The Range) that quite a few people go out for a fag in their break & I got to thinking that apart from colleagues, I don’t think I know anyone who smokes. I never have & I hate it. Was really shocked at one of our managers who had a near fatal heart attack last year but was still lighting up the other day. Is smoking generally decreasing?

1 friend

newnamewhosthis · 18/08/2019 19:16

My mum is the only smoker I know.

I'm a social smoker and only enjoy a couple when I've been drinking which is rarely. I have had the same packet since Feb.

I don't know how people can justify the cost in smoking if I'm honest

SnuggyBuggy · 18/08/2019 19:16

@JellyfishAndShells, my own parents tell me how when you went to the cinema you could barely see the screen through all the cigarette smoke and you had to go right up to the noticeboard at the jobcentre Grin.

It must have been really smelly or was it just normal background smell?

TroysMammy · 18/08/2019 19:17

One colleague and when she comes in she stinks and it makes me feel nauseous. No friends smoke but a couple of cousins do but we are not close. Only one Uncle smoked and he died of throat cancer at 43.

TheTempest · 18/08/2019 19:18

None of my friends, my ex sil does and her DH and their grown up children. I vape and know quite a few who do. Interesting question, at one point all my friends bar one did!

cliffdiver · 18/08/2019 19:19

One friend. No one in my family.

ragged · 18/08/2019 19:21

Lots of relatives in extended family smoked, at least those age 60+. My mom smoked (long deceased). My brothers smoke (one heavily).
Me & my dad never.

Dad's dad smoked for 45 yrs (developed lung cancer 21 yrs after he stopped). My other grandparents never smoked. About half of my (many) aunts & uncles smoked, I suppose.

Don't think I've ever been close friends with a smoker; couldn't imagine dating a smoker. Keep fearing DS will start, but not yet. Not aware of any smoker colleagues.

DurhamDurham · 18/08/2019 19:24

One of my friends smoke, two of my work colleagues and until recently my mum smoked. She gave up, over night, after smoking for over 50 years. She said she didn't enjoy them anymore.

HavelockVetinari · 18/08/2019 19:24

3 friends that live in another European country. None in the UK, although I used to socially smoke and DH used to properly smoke. Everyone seems to have given up these days, it's such an anti-social habit. I don't even know any colleagues who smoke out of dozens, although occasionally someone I don't know will get in the lift post-fag to catsbumfaces from everyone else in there.

Aquamarine1029 · 18/08/2019 19:29

No one aside from my MIL and FIL, which gives my husband the rage. Thankfully, they've never smoked inside their home, even when my husband was a child, so visiting them isn't too horrible. It's mind boggling because they are both intelligent, educated people. You would think they would have faced reality by now. When they visit us, my husband won't even allow them to smoke in our garden.

Drum2018 · 18/08/2019 19:30

Thankfully none of my/Dh's close family members (siblings and their other halves) smoke. The close family members (parents/aunts/uncles) who did smoke are dead - too many from smoking related illnesses. Some older cousins smoke. A couple of people we socialise with smoke and recently we were at a BBQ and one of them lit up beside me - sickening smell. I hate it, as I grew up in a house where adults smoked. Needless to say myself and siblings now have either asthma or sinus related issues. Im surprised to hear when teens start smoking nowadays, given all the advertising against it, but apparently a lot still do it.

RuthW · 18/08/2019 19:36

My uncle smokes and do does my boss. No other friend, family or anyone else I know does.

squee123 · 18/08/2019 19:37

don't know anyone that smokes or vapes

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 18/08/2019 19:39

My other half smokes and lots of my friends do socially. Even though I know most of them through a sport we play.

I have never smoked nor wanted to.

YerAWizardHarry · 18/08/2019 19:40

I'm on a girls holiday with 3 others and I'm currently sitting in the restaurant myself while everyone else smokes Envy lots of my colleagues smoke too

Skittlenommer · 18/08/2019 19:41

None. I refuse to be friends with anyone who smokes. It’s disgusting! If I made a new friend and they were the best person in the world if I found out they smoked I’d end the friendship immediately!

PolkadotLollipop · 18/08/2019 19:43

None of my friends

Two close family members, one of whom has a serious chronic smoking related illness which restricts their mobility greatly, despite only being in their mid 60’s (still chooses to smoke). I don’t understand it, I’ll be honest.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 18/08/2019 19:43

I can only think of one friend who smokes (but very rarely). We do have some family members who smoke but we are NC with them (NOT because of the smoking).

timshelthechoice · 18/08/2019 19:44

DH smokes, several friends do including my bestie. I used to.

TapasForTwo · 18/08/2019 19:47

Just one friend who smokes
My cousin - she has just had a heart attack, but is struggling to give up. She is very addicted to her cigarettes
My niece

Both of my parents were very heavy smokers. Their habit killed them. My sister and I just hate the smell of cigarette smoke.

BoswellsBollocks · 18/08/2019 19:50

My BIL, one colleague and a friend’s DH are the only smokers I know.

Me, DH, my 2 brothers, my 2 SILs and a close friend are all ex smokers. Both of my parents were smokers and both died of smoking related diseases.

Bravelurker · 18/08/2019 19:50

I have just given up over a month ago but regretfully I know as many smokers as non smokers. Although half of those smokers are now long term vapers with no wish to quit.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 18/08/2019 19:51

None - theres a fair few ex smokers, but all quit over 10 years ago.

I did read that smoking was becoming more of a minority activity and younger people are more likely to take up vaping than smoking. I reckon if it gets below 10% it'll just be banned altogether, or at least from public spaces.

Its interesting how attitudes to smoking have changed since the 90s.

cookiechomper · 18/08/2019 19:55

My husband's side of the family all smoke apart from him. Last time I was in my mother in law's there were 3 people smoking in the ( small) room. It was horrendous, I couldn't breathe. I also had one of my kids with me which made it worse. They eventually opened a window, but I'm not going to go round there again. It's disgusting.

Rainbowknickers · 18/08/2019 19:56

Trying my best to quit
I’ve had one fag in 3 days
I’d say about half of everyone I know smoke
My goal is to be vape free for my birthday next year
Worst thing I ever started
