How many of your friends & family smoke?

I notice at work ( The Range) that quite a few people go out for a fag in their break & I got to thinking that apart from colleagues, I don’t think I know anyone who smokes. I never have & I hate it. Was really shocked at one of our managers who had a near fatal heart attack last year but was still lighting up the other day. Is smoking generally decreasing?

One friend (male, 30s), no family

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 18/08/2019 21:48

I recently went to a high school reunion. There was about 40 of us there - we are all in our mid 50s.

I was the only one who nipped out for a fag.

Butternutsquashy · 18/08/2019 21:49

3 colleagues and 1 family member are smokers. 9 family/friends socially smoke 10 including me definitely think it's on the decline

cookieoclock · 18/08/2019 21:52

None. Mil did until recently but has now given up for around 6 months.

Lindormilk · 18/08/2019 21:53

No friends and no family members.

3-4 colleagues but its not allowed during lunch time (school).

Figgygal · 18/08/2019 21:56

None
No colleagues or family (no one in my family eve has) friends who did in our 20's have stopped too

MsAwesomeDragon · 18/08/2019 21:57

My late fil smoked. It's probably what killed him.
Sil (dh's sister) smokes a lot, as does her partner.
My sister used to smoke, switched to vaping a couple of years ago now. Her ex and his family all smoke like chimneys.

None of my friends smoke at all, but a handful of my colleagues smoke too. It's a very small minority of people that I know who smoke.

BertrandRussell · 18/08/2019 22:01

Nobody in my family smokes. Including 18 year old ds. No- he doesn’t smoke. Not even a bit. He just likes having his window wide open and having multiple incense sticks burning at all times....

beccarocksbaby · 18/08/2019 22:17

0 family

2 friends out of 10 close friends

1 me when drunk

5 out of 8 colleagues (which says something about my workplace)

RainbowMum11 · 18/08/2019 22:17

None.

yogafailure · 18/08/2019 22:21

No one in my work smokes - about 50 folk in total. I have one friend who smokes off and on and that it. No one in my family smokes although some did back in the 70/80's - they've all given up.
My dad died a hellish death from COPD due to smoking so that's freaked my dc out about smoking too.

SushiGo · 18/08/2019 22:24

No family (the ones that did have given up)

A few friends are social smokers

A few colleagues.

Definitely getting quite rare here. After an initial surge I don't see that many people vaping either.

icebearforpresident · 18/08/2019 22:35

Never thought about it until now but having racked my brains I can’t think of any current smokers, and only a few who are ex smokers.

I have one friend who I used to work with and we would both have a cigarette or two if we were on a night out and the right level of drunk (much to the amazement of our smoking colleagues) but we’ve both got kids now and tend to meet for coffee once every 6 months rather than going on wild nights out. It’s easily been over 2 years since I had a cigarette and I would guess she is the same.

A huge number of people in my town smoke. I work in a town centre office and regularly get smoke blowing through the (closed) door and have to go around with air freshener after people have left.

Bunnylady53 · 18/08/2019 22:54

@Gingerkittykat - if you are shocked by the amputees smoking, doesn’t that spur you on to quit yourself?

Bunnylady53 · 18/08/2019 22:55

I don’t know much about vaping, although I gather it has health problems attached to it

No smokers or vapers amongst my family and close friends .

Rachelover40 · 18/08/2019 23:07

I don't think I know anybody now who smokes but did years ago and for years. I smoked myself then. There were smoking areas outside at work with seats and ash trays. There was great cameraderie amongst smokers and you get to know people from other departments who can call on you and you on them if you need something.

I'm feeling nostalgic now though wouldn't want to smoke again. I don't mind others doing it but, like I said, don't know any smokers.

redeyetonowheregood · 18/08/2019 23:18

Only my brother smokes in my whole family. I have one friend who smokes socially but that is it. No colleagues that I know of.

User10fuckingmillion · 18/08/2019 23:23

2 but neither will admit it to anyone except me!

User10fuckingmillion · 18/08/2019 23:24

Oh and I have a couple of mates that smoke

Titsywoo · 18/08/2019 23:30

If you'd asked me 10 years ago I'd have said most of my friends, me, dh and his family (none of my family though). Now I'm 40 and pretty much no-one smokes. A few vape but I think I only know one person who smokes cigarettes! I never seem to see or smell them any more either. I smell weed more than fags strangely.

MidweekObscurity · 18/08/2019 23:32

I grew up with both my parents smoking, in fact there's a photo of my mum breastfeeding me whilst smoking! They both gave up around 50.

I've been an on/off smoker since I was 14, now 42. Currently not smoked for 5 months. DH quit about a month before me. He still vapes, I quit that after a month. Oldest friend also now just vapes. No smokers in DHs family.

Sunglower · 18/08/2019 23:50

None. But i was just thinking the other day that I’d never seen so many people smoking before. Everywhere we went we had to walk through clouds of smoke from people huddled in doorways.

DramaAlpaca · 18/08/2019 23:56

Nobody in my family of my generation smokes, but a few of my 20-something nieces & nephews do as do two of my DC. I hate it & I wish they wouldn't.

TiredOldTable · 19/08/2019 01:22

Interesting that people don't see vaping as smoking

Vaping has just been banned in San Francisco due to safety concerns/lack or regulation.
