What clothes would put you off a potential partner?

Inspired by the ‘What three items would you never wear?’ thread in AIBU - is there an item or style of clothing that would put you off if you were looking at someone as a potential partner?

I've just walked past a man who was wearing a ‘If found, please return to the pub’ T-shirt. This and all similar variants (‘In case of emergency please insert beer’ with an arrow pointing upwards etc.) would kill any lust for me. I’m sure there would be people who think it horribly judgemental, but I just know this would be the type of man who’d enjoy prank shows, Unilad and ‘epic bantz’.

Anyone else?

Crocs
Socks with sandals
Football shirt
Necklace/chains/bracelets

HeyMonkey · 04/08/2019 23:08

Skinny jeans.
Big brands emblazoned on T-shirt's.
Shirts with white collars.
Those preppy tight shorts hipsters wear.

Most signs of twatty vanity in men. Can't stand it. I'd much rather a scruff with holes in his socks and ripped pants than a vain fashionable man.

Frith2013 · 04/08/2019 23:08

I can’t believe I’d forgotten my least favourite.

Proper work shirt with tie but SHORT SLEEVED.

No.

SpoonBlender · 04/08/2019 23:08

Shitty brand names - the 'not bought for quality, just the logo' stuff.
A tie.
A suit (for casual wear).
Old school blazer.
Smoking jacket.
Socks and sandals.
Hipster 'lumberjack look' outfit.
Football shirts.
MAGA hat. Ironically or not.
Sweary T-shirts.
Winklepickers.
"Keep calm and" anything.
Loose trackies. It's a shame boys don't get to wear yoga pants though...

FrangipaniBlue · 04/08/2019 23:09

Oh yeah and definitely a man bun!!

HeyMonkey · 04/08/2019 23:10

See, I'd take a nerd in socks and sandals than a dressed up man with hair gel and fashionable jeans any day.

Dancinggertrude · 04/08/2019 23:11

@soola well this is what I thought 🤷‍♀️
Which straight man chooses superfine merino all by himself?

HeyMonkey · 04/08/2019 23:11

Also fake tan 🤮

HeyMonkey · 04/08/2019 23:12

Basically any man who could be in Love Island.

Dancinggertrude · 04/08/2019 23:15

Oh yeah @Frith2013 that is so supermarket manager stylee. Or like, Mr saturday boy at dixons circa 1995

BizzzzyBee · 04/08/2019 23:15

Another vote for sports clothes or tracksuits, football shirts or anything sport related. I like men to be relatively smart and posh looking, not loutish and common.

PickAChew · 04/08/2019 23:16

Dirty ones.

Suit and tie where not essential.

Beige slacks.

ditheringdorothy · 04/08/2019 23:16

Tracksuits worn as daily wear, not to partake in sporting activities.
Weird neck scarf thingies.
Too short shorts.

Dancinggertrude · 04/08/2019 23:19

One earring 🥴

PickAChew · 04/08/2019 23:22

DH used to wear boot cut jeans. 15 years ago, when you couldn't get anything else. He just wears straight cut on his long, skinny legs, these days.

LilouBlue · 04/08/2019 23:24

Football shirts. No excuse for them ever unless you're actually playing football, in which case I wouldn't be interested anyway. Fleeces of any description. Smart boots I don't think ever look right on men.

Boyfriend has a couple of dodgy looking cardigans that I haven't actually seen him wear yet, I'm hoping they aren't as bad as I fear. He does have a fondness for "unusual" shirts, but can usually pull those off, I like that he wears things that don't make him look like every other bloke you come across. He fell in love with one a few weeks ago that had birds on it, like the illustrations you'd find in a nature book. It didn't fit him and I'm still not sure how I feel about that!

howwudufeel · 04/08/2019 23:25

I really hate the 3/4 cargo trousers some men wear. I saw a man wearing them today, teamed up with a vest top. Offenders always seem to wear those little running shoes with them. Why do they think it’s a good look? Hideous.

AntHilda · 04/08/2019 23:27

Outfits that look more put together than a woman's such as: blazer, tight shirt, tiny tight trousers rolled up to expose bare ankle, complemented by the biggest dickhead shoes of slippers I mean loafers. Urgh, where is the masculinity in that?
I remember splitting with ex and looking around me in town on a Saturday night thinking is this the type of men available, no thanks. Puke.
Added to that they are wearing more fake than than women, they all have identical haircuts and tattooed hands.
Anyway, I digress, other things I find off putting are:
3 quarter length trousers with the toggles
Anything adorned with tribal designs
Flared jeans (chewed to death where they trail at the back )with pointy shoes.
Really low cut vests/shirts
Anything pink
Chinos or chino shorts
Hawaiian shirts.
Trainers with laces pulled tight so the middles are touching
Trainers that are filthy
Slip on trainers
Flip flops
Anything that exposes builders bum or a gut
Shirts with sexual references (sleezy)

=>not fussy at all

Iamthewombat · 04/08/2019 23:30

Oooh where do I start?

(I laughed long and hard at the bootcut jeans).

V neck t shirts on men. Just no. It looks slightly coy and girlish. I remember Michael bloody Douglas in Basic Instinct going to a nightclub in a v necked jumper and nothing to fill in the horrid chesty gap. It was hilarious then (circa 1990?) so how have men learned so little in the intervening 29 years?

Also, those round necked collarless tops with a ‘placket (?)’ and 3 buttons. I don’t want to see your neck or scrawny upper chest. Even worse if long sleeved and wrought from jersey material. I feel quite nauseous at the thought, actually.

Neck chains. God, I hate them. Especially the gold ‘18th birthday present’ type. Particularly when worn with a short sleeved, open necked shirt THE HORROR.

Those bloody woolly hats that are elongated and make the wearer look like a smurf.

AntHilda · 04/08/2019 23:35

@Iamthewombat Grin yes, smurf hats!
These also piss me off

What clothes would put you off a potential partner?
PancakeAndKeith · 04/08/2019 23:45

Any form of sportswear when not actually doing sport.
Anything bought just for the name, like Superdry.
T-shirts that say crap like ‘1974 San Francisco surf team’.
Band T-shirts when you don’t actually know anything about the band you just like the logo.

Around here it now seems to be fashion for office working type men to wear shoes, not trainers, without socks and their trousers rolled up.

And what is the deal with wearing open toed Japanese toilet slippers everywhere?

DH does wear some of the stuff listed in this thread. Namely chinos, tweed and red trainers.

PennyPitStop19 · 04/08/2019 23:55

Lace up shoes with no socks
Loafers
Ripped jeans

FazakerlyJackie · 04/08/2019 23:55

White socks
Balaclavas
Anything with North Face on it
Black trackies and hoodies
Sweaty unfit men in Everton away kit ( especially if sporting longish hair and a tonsure type bald patch)

PennyPitStop19 · 05/08/2019 00:00

Cardigans with a roll collar.

Ralph Lauren stuff

PennyPitStop19 · 05/08/2019 00:00

A Hermes belt
