The best village to live in in Yorkshire?

GloriaSnockers · 29/07/2019 00:05

DH and I are looking to move and we would like to move to Yorkshire.

Our requirements are...
Lively villlage
Picturesque village
Village green, duckpond, cricket pitch, that type of village centre
Oh and a great pub or two.
Decent broadband, we both work from home

Schools, public transport etc not an issue. What villages would you recommend?

Yorkshire is massive ... it's three counties including the biggest in England, and not at all homogeneous . Do you want to narrow the down a bit?

IdaBWells · 29/07/2019 00:44

I was just going to make the same comment as previous poster.

Bunnybigears · 29/07/2019 00:45

Tickhill in South Yorkshire. Hope you have a big budget though.

Dowser · 29/07/2019 06:53

Easingwold is lovely. Very small town with a village feel
Just 15 miles from york if you want to pop down for a day / night out
As we do often

BarbaraofSeville · 29/07/2019 07:02

Where in Yorkshire have you been up to now OP?

Agree with others - Yorkshire, if we're talking about N, S, W and E is an enormous diverse county.

Do you mean somewhere deep in the Yorkshire Dales or south Pennines, miles from anywhere, or do you mean one of the many villages on the outskirts of the cities, that still feel very quiet and remote when you are there, but are around 20-30 minutes from all that a big city can offer?

I suspect that the broadband may be an issue in places like Kettlewell or possibly Malham compared to the villages close to cities, but there are literally hundreds to choose from that would meet your OP, so you need to narrow down your list considerably, or else it is literally sticking a pin in a map.

Holmfirth West Yorkshire

Aqueo517 · 29/07/2019 07:26

We’ve just had a weeks holiday in Pickering and I’d say it ticks all those boxes.

TheDinnerWitch · 29/07/2019 07:31

Bawtry, South Yorkshire

Bluesheep8 · 29/07/2019 07:53

I came to say Holmfirth or Marsden

Allovertheworld64 · 29/07/2019 07:56

Great Ayton, North Yorkshire.

Dowser · 29/07/2019 08:06

Great Aston is lovely but you’re too much in the hub of Middlesbrough
Outskirts of york is far nicer in my opinion
But yes Yorkshire is huge

Allovertheworld64 · 29/07/2019 08:15

True Dowser but no need to venture that way .... Stokesley, Northallerton, Thirsk & then York!

paffuto · 29/07/2019 08:18

Cottingham, east yorkshire. Largest village in England, has everything and close to Beverley, small picturesque town with beautiful minster. 45 min drive from Scarborough and Yorkshire moors.

BikeRunSki · 29/07/2019 08:18

Holmfirth and Marsden are lovely, but very much towns rather than villages.

But yes OP, Yorkshire is massive and diverse. You need to narrow it down a bit.

MrsMozartMkII · 29/07/2019 08:25

OP do you want to be near the sea? Moorland? Cities? Big towns? Motorway links? Train links?

I know I'm biased but I'd be heading back to North Yorkshire, somewhere near Harrogate.

And what's your budget? There are some seriously expensive areas.

ems137 · 29/07/2019 08:26

Helmsley, Easingwold, Haxby, Pocklington, Pickering.

There are 1000's of villages and Yorkshire is a fecking huge place. I think you need to narrow it down a bit.

NorberErratics · 29/07/2019 08:35

I suspect that the broadband may be an issue in places like Kettlewell or possibly Malham compared to the villages close to cities,

I don't think it goes quite as far as those but some of the western parts of North Yorkshire are included in BARN.

NorberErratics · 29/07/2019 08:37

Another criterion the OP might want to clarify is whether they mind if it's somewhere that gets touristed.

FetchezLaVache · 29/07/2019 08:37

Grewelthorpe, North Yorks.

madja · 29/07/2019 08:39

I'm in West Yorkshire near the Pennines and there are some beautiful villages up here, but it's not that close to any larger cities.
It would help to know where you would be working as not all places are commutable. Yorkshire is massive!

escape · 29/07/2019 08:42

Ilkley, West Yorks.
Stamford Bridge, nr York
Newmillerdam/Sandal, near Wakefield

madja · 29/07/2019 08:42

Sorry, just read you work from home.
I would say that you need to narrow your search down to areas that you like. Maybe visit?
If money is no object then North Yorkshire is gorgeous.

FaerieKiss · 29/07/2019 09:21

Helmsley. Love it.

Groovee · 29/07/2019 09:24

We usually stay at Walkington close to Beverley. I totally love Beverley and would love to live there x

Drogosnextwife · 29/07/2019 09:27

I've only been to North Yorkshire but I love it there. Beautiful place with lots of lovely villages and towns. I would love to live there.
