The best village to live in in Yorkshire?

GloriaSnockers · 29/07/2019 00:05

DH and I are looking to move and we would like to move to Yorkshire.

Our requirements are...
Lively villlage
Picturesque village
Village green, duckpond, cricket pitch, that type of village centre
Oh and a great pub or two.
Decent broadband, we both work from home

Schools, public transport etc not an issue. What villages would you recommend?

Greendale Grin

SpeedyShutter · 29/07/2019 11:59

South Kirkby, Hemsworth, Upton, South Elmsall, Fitzwilliam or Kinsley 😂😂😂 probably not if you're looking for picturesque or posh. SK has a duck pond though and Hemsworth has the waterpark😂

BikeRunSki · 29/07/2019 12:29

@SpeedyShutter, I was going to say! Kirk Smeeton and Wentbridge are nice in that part of the world though.

There are quite a few nice villages around York that all would have what you are after. To add to Nun Monkton: Stillington, Sutton-on-the-Forest, Crayke, Sheriff Hutton, Slingsby etc. I'd say they are all fairly similar in terms of style of house. If you don't mind being a little bit further out then Hutton-le-Hole is properly chocolate box (but does have the tourists to go with it). Going further east into the Wolds there are places like Thixendale, Huggate or Bishop Burton.

There are direct trains from Harrogate to Kings X, but it is a fair bit longer journey so not sure if you would want that. But if you were open to it then the villages nearer Harrogate are quite different in style to those around York, and you get more picturesque scenery (imo).

l used to live in Shelley, near Holmfirth. lt's very villagey. Two pubs, a church, a village shop (you know it's a village when you go to the shop and there's a tractor in the parking bay). A dairy farm with an ice cream parlour, a garden centre, and a village hall. No post office, but it 'visits' two afternoons a week, and there's one in the next village. There's a large-ish academy school about a mile away.
l liked it, my house had incredible views across the valley at the back, but it's very hilly, and a nightmare in winter when it snows.

Avoid anywhere west of the M1, like Holmfirth or Marsden. Lovely places but it rains and rains and rains.

katseyes7 · 29/07/2019 12:54

Thinking about it, l'd agree with previous posters and go for somewhere around York. There are some lovely places round there.

Patroclus · 29/07/2019 13:04

Id look at Nafferton or Cranswick , both near the sea as well and close to Hull, Beverley and York. I had a happy time growing up there.

Patroclus · 29/07/2019 13:06

The counties are really different to each other. North Yorkshire is very remote, East yorkshire more of a fishing/farming culture and the other 2 I dont even know so much about, Yorkhire is that big.

We would have to go to London once per week so I guess living within a 30 - 45 minute drive of York station would be practical.

That does narrow down the realistic options.

MsRinky · 29/07/2019 17:19

God, there's bits of York where you'd struggle to get to the station in 30 minutes, let alone remote villages. I'll scrap all the ones I was going to suggest.

wordgirl · 29/07/2019 17:26

Appleton Roebuck or Bolton Percy would fit the bill I reckon

BarbaraofSeville · 29/07/2019 17:26

I know the OP is looking at the York area, but both Leeds and Wakefield are on the fast line to London and both have villages in the surrounding area that could serve the station within well under an hour if the OP wants to be there by 7 am and isn't coming back until about 6.30 pm. Doncaster too.

Leeds is a big vibrant city but Wakefield city centre is rather run down, but does have have some lovely villages on the outskirts.

cricketmum84 · 29/07/2019 17:32

My parents have a caravan near rillington (near York) and absolutely love the area. They would definitely recommend a move there!

BikeRunSki · 29/07/2019 17:34

What BarbaraOfSeville said is true about how quickly you can get to London from Leeds or Wakefield (from Wakefield Westgate it’s pretty much 2 hours on the nose) but it’s only about 2hrs 10 from York.

Toooldtobearsed2 · 29/07/2019 17:40

I love Helmsley, but just discovered Sinnington and it is fabulous.
Stokesley is nice, Hutton le Hole (in my humble opinion), is vastly overated.
Nice to visit.
Once.
Awful to live there.

There are loads of gorgeous villages in Yorkshire. God, I could bore for Britain in the subject.....you need to narrow the search 😁

PinkysEars · 29/07/2019 17:56

Sinnington is indeed lovely, but it's on the River Seven and floods, so that's maybe a risk for insurance and selling in the future.

30-45 minutes to York station narrows it down considerably and takes out the North York Moors really. Might just manage the Howardian Hills though. Terrington is pretty and fulfils most other criteria I think.

Nearlyfriyay987654 · 29/07/2019 18:02

@GloriaSnockers Richmond, North Yorkshire? Gorgeous town and fab to bring children up in. Darlington nearest station - 20mins by car or a 40 min bus ride

GloriaSnockers · 29/07/2019 18:04

Hmmm, may have to reconsider York if getting to the station is a nightmare!
How about the much broader search of within 45 mins of any station that will get to London in a couple of hours?!!
I will be spending this evening on Rightmove looking at all suggestions, thank you everyone 😃

I live in a village between Wetherby and Leeds, York is around 20mins Leeds a little less (not in rush hour) so many villages between between Leeds, Harrogate and York. All depends what you want for your budget.

Woodman03 · 29/07/2019 18:16

York station at the time you are going isn’t a nightmare.

BikeRunSki · 29/07/2019 18:25

One way to narrow it down, is to filter out anywhere prone to flooding. Thus is a problem in parts of York, Beverley/Driffield/The East Riding, Sinnington and Doncaster, as well asplaces not mentioned up thread.
