The best village to live in in Yorkshire?

GloriaSnockers · 29/07/2019 00:05

DH and I are looking to move and we would like to move to Yorkshire.

Our requirements are...
Lively villlage
Picturesque village
Village green, duckpond, cricket pitch, that type of village centre
Oh and a great pub or two.
Decent broadband, we both work from home

Schools, public transport etc not an issue. What villages would you recommend?

Do you live in Helmsley FairieKiss

I always wonder what it is like when the tourists leave? It is very expensive and so many properties in the town area appear to be second homes. I wonder what it is like in winter?

bebeboeuf · 29/07/2019 09:36

Ive not been to a lot of Yorkshire but have friends in Richmond and when we visit often come home wondering if we could relocate to a village near there as it all appears so lovely.

Im also a big fan of Wensleydale cheese and quite enjoy my visits there, but not too sure I would want to live somewhere that gets so congested on a busy day

Benes · 29/07/2019 09:38

It depends on your definition of Yorkshire..... Saddleworth used to be classed as Yorkshire but is now in Lancashire and has a number of villages that match your description.

I would begin by finding a market town (or larger) that you would like to be in close proximity to and then have a look on rightmove at properties within a 10 mile radius. If you’d like to be that close to a town that is. For me, I would find the inconvenience of being any further from a supermarket, greengrocers, transport links to the bigger towns and cities too much.

While being in a village with a pub and shop is lovely, I value our local market town much more highly in terms of the difference it makes to our quality of life.

So my advice would be to start with the town and work out from there.

NavyBlueHue · 29/07/2019 09:40

South Cave and surrounding areas are just as you described. Beautiful villages and the town of Beverley is lovely too.

As well as which part of Yorkshire, budget would also be useful to know. Money definitely stretches further in some areas of Yorkshire than others.

Ingurr · 29/07/2019 09:42

Grewelthorpe. Near to Ripon.

Bluesheep8 · 29/07/2019 09:42

Just checked and Holmfirth is indeed a town. Marsden is a village

BarbaraofSeville · 29/07/2019 09:44

What are your thoughts on hills OP?

Some of the county is very very hilly, some is flat for miles around.

Bluesheep8 · 29/07/2019 09:46

Didn't mean that to sound snippy!

PinkysEars · 29/07/2019 09:50

Not Helmsley. It's very pretty but it's a pain in the arse to live in. It's also a town, as is Pickering.

Hovingham is lovely (and fits the criteria), but I'm with everyone above saying that Yorkshire is so huge that you'll need to narrow it down.

InspirationUnavailable · 29/07/2019 09:55

Sheriff Hutton near York would also fit the bill but is enormously expensive.

Zaphodsotherhead · 29/07/2019 09:57

Hutton le Hole.

But just be aware that, in North Yorkshire, a lot of villages like this are completely cut off when it snows.

Bluesheep8 · 29/07/2019 10:00

Yes you need to be a fan of hills for Holmfirth or Marsden op

Blahblahblahnanana · 29/07/2019 10:24

Holmfirth, although classed as a town is like a large village. The there’s a few shops in the centre which non are high street ones, there’s nice places to eat and nice pubs, yes it’s hilly but beautiful. Most places in West Yorkshire are hilly.

Hebden Bridge, in Ripponden in West Yorkshire are also nice.

I also agree that Saddleworth which is just over the moors from Holmfirth and in Lancashire is a lovely place too.

Blahblahblahnanana · 29/07/2019 10:26

I meant Hebden Bridge and Ripponden are nice too.

Blahblahblahnanana · 29/07/2019 10:28

Oh and although Hebden Bridge is another small town and larger than Holmfirth the surrounding area is lovely.

SuperPixie247 · 29/07/2019 10:36

Helperby is lovely

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 29/07/2019 10:43

I'm in South Yorkshire but I'd choose Haworth or Robin Hoods Bay if money was no object! No idea what the broadband is like in these areas though, and I suppose they're both very touristy..

Phillipa12 · 29/07/2019 10:47

A third vote for Grewelthorpe, West Tanfield is also lovely.

GloriaSnockers · 29/07/2019 11:01

Wow, load of responses, thanks!
Re being more specific we're thinking North Yorkshire at the moment and in my mind had I a village like Nun Monkton, not that I've ever visited, only seen pictures, it's stunning!
We would have to go to London once per week so I guess living within a 30 - 45 minute drive of York station would be practical.
Budget, up to £600k.
We're not on the market at the moment, just thinking about where we'd like to be when we do move, would probably start the move process next year.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/07/2019 11:13

You should probably disregard driving into York and parking anywhere near the station as a practical or affordable option.

However, York does have excellent park and ride facilities with several locations on the outskirts of the city.

GloriaSnockers · 29/07/2019 11:21

Thanks for the info re York station, work would be paying for any parking and we'd be looking at getting a 7AM train and arriving back at York at approx 6.30PM the same day if that makes any difference?
