Only got here yesterday. In a sort of complex in Menorca with my dc and some other family. It advertised as having air con. The room was stifling. After hours of complaining they finally moved me and dc rooms about 1030 last night. It’s marginally better but boiling. We now back onto all the bars so it’s bloody loud. I nod off Eventually but woke sweaty and an annoying bird has been outside my window ALL night. Iv had 2 hours sleep and want to go home. I have 3 more nights but can’t cope with this. I get migraines and lack of sleep is a trigger. It’s in the 30’s and boiling. Kids won’t forgive me if we went home and my parents wouldn’t go home either. I don’t know what to do. I’m going to complain again but this is ridiculous. This is our second room....... in so tired I was actually crying at 3am!

Yes I’m a LP and my parents are here in a different room. The dc have special needs and won’t go out without me so that isn’t an option. I can cope in the day with the heat etc it’s the lack of sleep and heat at night. I get migraines which present like a stroke and I desperately don’t need that happening here. I have a banging head ache now. Yes I have taken pain killers.

El0die Yes you are right about the first night for sure, especially as Iv had to deal with unsettled dc with special needs. I will be hunting contact details for travel rep.

Ask your parents to have the children whilst you get a cab into a bigger town where you can buy a fan.

Inbedbynine · 14/07/2019 07:09

Thank you, yes I will be heading off to buy a fan if I don’t get anywhere.

Where on Menorca can you be if bars and restaurants are noisy after midnight? Music and noise finishes everywhere by midnight (it's the law).
Normally air con won't work unless you shut all the doors and windows (sensors). What temp do you have it set at?
Ask again at reception for a fan. If not, google Holiday Hire menorca, and they will hire you one.

WelshMoth · 14/07/2019 07:15

First night is always really challenging OP! Don't go home!

Follow advice here and then try and go out to have a lovely day.

GCAcademic · 14/07/2019 07:17

From experience, the wet towel thing definitely works.

LizzieSiddal · 14/07/2019 07:17

If it says Air Con in the holiday description and it isn’t working properly- the hotel really are at fault. They should be providing electric fans etc. Hope you get this sorted today.

Moanger · 14/07/2019 07:19

Put a big bottle of water in the freezer and when it’s time for bed wrap it in a towel and use it a cold water bottle. Hopefully your body will adjust to the heat difference and you get a better nights sleep tonight. 🤞🏻

Soola · 14/07/2019 07:22

I know you say the children won’t go out without you so they’ll have to stay inside with your parents whilst you go and get the fan.

Cantchooseaname · 14/07/2019 07:25

Couple wet flannels, put them on feet/ head wrists to keep cooler at night.
Can everyone have a bit of a siesta? Chill out with iPad/ cartoons etc? Even if you can’t sleep, an hour doing nothing might recharge a bit?

MistyMinge2 · 14/07/2019 07:30

Who did you book through? Have they got Instagram or twitter? I'd be tagging them or the complex all over social media warning people that the air con is mythical. See if that gets some attention.

I think all you can try and do is make the best of it. Try the wet towel. Cotton wool for ear plugs. Keep windows shut in the day and draw the curtains /shutters to try and keep the room cooler. Have a cold shower before bed.

Don't try and do much in the day. Most kids are happy to hang out by the pool or on the beach. Plenty of drinks and ice lollies.

Hope it gets better for you

Jenniferturkington · 14/07/2019 07:31

Nowhere in Menorca is that remote. Go and buy a fan, don’t rely on someone else to sort this out for you.
Agree with PP - you’ll ruin the holiday for everyone else at this rate. And it’s only for four days!

Jamhandprints · 14/07/2019 07:37

Air con is not popular in Spain for environmental reasons but they always have it in cinemas and shopping centres. Is there anywhere like that you could go? And definitely complain to your travel agent/rep/ hotel. Ask for your money back if nothing else. I have had migraines like you describe and they are scary so you have my sympathies. Have a nice cool shower or bath whenever you get too hot.

DivisionBelles · 14/07/2019 08:03

The wet towel thing works. We went to Spain in July a few years ago and had no air con. The hear was stifling, but a towel, wetted, then wrung out to lie underneath worked for me. I'm used to sleeping with the windows open at all times of the year and found the nighttime heat incredibly draining.

HopeIsNotAStrategy · 14/07/2019 08:07

If it's a hot and cold aircon system with vents in the wall, it may well need the filters washing, they get very dusty over time. Makes a big difference if that's the problem, see if you can get the engineer to do that. A quick and easy fix.

Also take a tip from the Spanish and have a siesta?

I agree with putting pressure on your holiday company if the hotel won't act.

Lovemusic33 · 14/07/2019 08:09

I thought I was going to read a similar post to the poor lady who has anti social pricks in the apartment next to her, or one of those posts where everyone’s struck down by illness.

It’s a hot country, it’s the middle of the summer, surely you expected it to be hot and slightly uncomfortable? Did you not research what the average temperatures are? Even with air con it’s going to be warm when you leave your room. Maybe buy a fan from a local store or do as others have said with cold wet towels? It’s hardly a holiday from hell.

PollyPelargonium52 · 14/07/2019 08:13

Whenever I go away I always take full set of meds with me, a dark sheet to cover any bright windows with clothes pegs and also ear plugs which are very cheap and you can get on ebay.

Hope this helps for any future trips away!

BritInUS1 · 14/07/2019 08:15

I find a cold flannel on the back of my neck also helps x

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 14/07/2019 08:16

After you've spoken to manager, can you try to take the kids to a big supermarket cafe for breakfast? They always have the best aircon and it will cool you all down. I hope you feel better soon x

montymum · 14/07/2019 08:19

In this situation I find a freezing cold bottle of water behind my knees rapidly brings down my body temperature and allows me to get to sleep. Everything always seems 100 times worse in the early hours of the morning. I hope you have a nice quiet day today and have a better night tonight.

Pinklady1982 · 14/07/2019 08:27

Hi Op, I work for a travel company in customer relations, so would definitely advise to contact your rep asap. You won't have any rights for complaint once you return if you don't do what you can to try and rectify things while you are still on holiday. The rep should also speak to the hotel staff for you and from experience they listen to reps more than customers! Hope you manage to get something sorted. I genuinly feel for you, must be awful being so uncomfortable x

You obviously have access to a computer, join Amazon Prime for a trial, fan by tomorrow.

TheStuffedPenguin · 14/07/2019 08:30

This reminds me of an American woman I saw once complaining about there being seaweed on the beach and in the sea Confused

LillithsFamiliar · 14/07/2019 08:43

Can you try to nap today at the pool? You need sleep and a solution to the heat. PPs have given lots of good suggestions so hopefully something works.
