Something that annoys me about petrol stations

Why, when petrol stations have chip and pin at the pump do people waste time do go into the shop to pay yet buy nothing in the shop but pay for the petrol? Doesn't everyone have chin and pin cards now? It's a little pet hate of mine.

Even better I use the apps.

Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2019 20:37

They have the fear, they are the same people that don't use Scan and Shop at the supermarket. Technofear. Grin

Or they are paying cash or have some money off per litre coupons or something?

Raylas · 14/06/2019 20:38

Sometimes the pay at pump machines take a few days to show on your available balance, whereas card machines generally reflect the payment on your available balance almost straight away. It's not a problem for me now so much but when money was very tight I got caught out a couple of times with that.

Despite knowing this it annoys me too. My DM always did it til I asked why and it turns out she was scared she wouldn't understand how to use the pay at pump. I reckon there's lots of people like that too.

Whitelisbon · 14/06/2019 20:38

My card doesn't work for pay at pump.
I try regularly, but it still didn't work last week.

ChippyMinton · 14/06/2019 20:38

If you pay at the pump how do you know what other people are doing in the shop?

Pay at pump for me though unless I need milk or sweeties.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 14/06/2019 20:38

Not all petrol stations have pay-at-pump.

I've been driving for 30+ years and going to the shop to pay is now an ingrained habit. I am indifferent to your irritation.

ExpletiveDelighted · 14/06/2019 20:39

Maybe they are just not used to it, there aren't any round here so I've very rarely encountered one.

Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2019 20:40

I wish more petrol stations would have pay at the pump. I always go to ones that do unless an emergency.

KnifeAngel · 14/06/2019 20:40

We have just changed to a basic bank account. The cards won't work at the pay at pumps. We have to go in to the shop. My parents won't use them after having their cards cloned so also go in to the shop.

AbsolCatly · 14/06/2019 20:41

I use the kiosk for the same reason I use tills with real people

I get to speak with and interact with a human and demonstrate there is still a need for large business to employ people and not just computers

livinglavidavillanelle · 14/06/2019 20:41

I only used scan and shop for the first time this week. It's a bloody revalation! Having said that, if there's a pay at pump option I will use it.
People have a fear of the unknown. They worry that they won't know what to do...it's human nature

MissKittyCat · 14/06/2019 20:42

I normally use pay at pump at Sainsburys but sometimes I.have 'double Nectar points on fuel' vouchers which can only be redeemed if you pay in the shop so have to do that. I prefer to.pay at pump.

YoureMyWifeNowDave · 14/06/2019 20:43

I have a fuelgenie card and it doesn’t work in the pay at pump machines

OldSpeclkledHen · 14/06/2019 20:43

Because I'm a technophobe!!

I just don't like doing it!

What really grinds my gears? People buying their entire week shop in the petrol station 🙃

AnnieOH1 · 14/06/2019 20:43

Pay at pumps are moving to make sure you have a minimum amount (might be £100 maybe more) in your account or it wont authorise the card. (Rather than the debit £1 and the rest will come out later.) Sadly lots of people don't necessarily have enough in their account to cover it.

Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2019 20:44

After a certain time our nearest big Tesco Petrol station closes but leaves 4 pumps that are Pay at the Pump open so people can get petrol 24/7. Genius.

Laurajjj · 14/06/2019 20:46

But you can see the people come back to their car with no milk or sweets.

If people can use chip and pin in the supermarket then why not at a petrol station pump?

Today Friday rush hour everyone filling their car for weekend and cars queuing up and people waste everyone's time just to stand in a que at the till to pay by, you've guessed it, by card.

The petrol place I go to doesn’t have a pay at pump. We are slow to catch on in these parts.

I expect if Sainsburys ever upgrades the supermarket they will add pay at pump.

I’d prefer it, I don’t like petrol station kiosk smells.

Userplusnumbers · 14/06/2019 20:48

I would, but because its a corporate card it doesn't work at the pump for some reason - annoys the fuck out of me as it takes four times as long

Laurajjj · 14/06/2019 20:48

Who on earth does a weekly shop in the petrol filling station?! They only have the very basics.

OP posts:
iklboo · 14/06/2019 20:48

The ones near us rarely give receipts. DH needs them for his business.

Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2019 20:51

Our local petrol stations have full on mini supermarkets, way more than very basics. M&S and Sainsburys ones even have trollies available so they want you to buy lots.. I could easily to a weekly shop in there, but I don't because that would be weird.

The M&S one has a Wild Bean Cafe so you can queue for a latte as well. Grin

Loveislandaddict · 14/06/2019 20:52

Too many stories about people’s cards Being cloned at outside cash machines. Admittedly, that’s cash machines rather than pumps, but I feel safer using the shop tills.

Yabbers · 14/06/2019 20:52

My card sometimes doesn't work in them

BuffaloCauliflower · 14/06/2019 20:53

My Natwest debit card has never worked at pay at pump. Works everywhere else, including contactless, but not at the pump at Tesco (most local to me) I’ve mentioned it in the station and was told they’ve often had problems with Natwest cards. No idea why.
