Something that annoys me about petrol stations

Why, when petrol stations have chip and pin at the pump do people waste time do go into the shop to pay yet buy nothing in the shop but pay for the petrol? Doesn't everyone have chin and pin cards now? It's a little pet hate of mine.

Sometimes I want to use the toilet inside. In any case , how so you know they haven't bought anything .Maybe it is in their pocket or bag.

UrsulaPandress · 14/06/2019 22:59

You still haven’t said why it bothers you?

TheLionQueen1 · 14/06/2019 23:05

I use a fuel card as drive a company car and it doesn't work in any of the pay at pumps. I notice a number of people using them when I'm queuing so probably the case quite often

Laurajjj · 15/06/2019 00:30

Oh come on, surely everyone picked upon this was a light hearted debate? One or two people obviously didn't pick that angle up I suppose. I'm not exactly going to write to my local MP about people not using chip and pin machines at petrol pumps.

Erm, no.

pinkandstripey · 15/06/2019 01:13

My card was (most likely location) cloned at pay at pump.

BiteyShark · 15/06/2019 06:20

One of my credit cards (I collect points so use CCs for everything) wouldn't work at a local petrol station that had brand new pumps. It was so annoying to have to go into pay.

Changed cards and I can now pay at the pump except it takes longer as they take ages to authorise payment and then a good minute to print a receipt Angry.

KnitterOfSocks · 15/06/2019 06:29

I use the BPMe app. Works brilliantly and gives receipts.

KatherineJaneway · 15/06/2019 06:36

My local petrol station doesn't have pay at pump, so it is a habit to go into the shop / kiosk to pay.

Barnabyboy · 15/06/2019 06:42

Never use it, never will

birdling · 15/06/2019 08:12

Because I want to pay by cash, not card.

Kahlua4me · 15/06/2019 08:21

Choice

SophyStantonLacy · 15/06/2019 08:24

I really miss living in countries where someone pumps the petrol for you & then brings the card machine to your car.

TapasForTwo · 15/06/2019 08:40

The same reasons that have already been posted

  1. I feel that it is very important to keep people in work. I rarely use the self service tills at the supermarket for the same reason
  2. I can't use my loyalty card at the pump
  3. I accept that there will be queues to pay as we are rural, and our local petrol station doubles up as a small supermarket and post office
  4. None of our local petrol stations have this facility anyway
TeamUnicorn · 15/06/2019 08:41

Not all pumps have the buttons to be able to dispense a certain amount, especially the older ones.

TeamUnicorn · 15/06/2019 08:43

I always feel like I am doing a drive off if I pay at the pump. I have a whole panic going on that I have in fact not paid.

counttotenandbreathe · 15/06/2019 08:49

Because it is someone's job and if everyone used the machine then maybe that person may no longer required. Every little helps someone!

BonnieSeptember · 15/06/2019 08:51

The one I use only allows you to put in a set value of petrol, I run my car to the last bar of petrol and fill up each time because getting petrol is a ballache. So there's that

jennymanara · 15/06/2019 08:53

The buttons that you can press for exact amounts aren't by the rest of the buttons, they are up next to the digital display, so it might be you haven't seen them.

Sparklingbrook The supermarket I use ASDA, does not have buttons for exact amounts. It has the cheapest petrol, so I go there. It also only has 2 out of 6 of the pumps with facility to pay at pump.

dudsville · 15/06/2019 08:57

Because although I'm willing to be toiletted and brought an array of snack items at my car this does not seem the popular choice.

OnlineAlienator · 15/06/2019 08:58

Ingrained habit - when every pump is pay-at-pump i will do it, until then i cant be bothered trying to establish which system each pump is on.

Skyejuly · 15/06/2019 09:01

Well I always always always pay in cash! I'm not scared technology but I do have limited funds so draw out what I need for the werk.

orangeshoebox · 15/06/2019 09:03

I always at fuel with credit card (to keep work expenses in one place) and pay at pump often don't give the right receipt.

EleanorReally · 15/06/2019 09:16

The reward cards dont always work.
i use a receipt app and so like the receipt

EleanorReally · 15/06/2019 09:19

actually my nearest pay at pump took away that facility.

we did have one annoying petrol station that you had to pay before you took the petrol, because they had so many drivers driving away without paying. i avoid that place
