Something that annoys me about petrol stations

Why, when petrol stations have chip and pin at the pump do people waste time do go into the shop to pay yet buy nothing in the shop but pay for the petrol? Doesn't everyone have chin and pin cards now? It's a little pet hate of mine.

I’m another cash person.
I put in 10 or 20 at a time depending what I have, so it’s cash.

jackparlabane · 15/06/2019 09:25

I like a stroll when breaking a journey, and as my local petrol stations don't have pay at pump, it never occurred to me to try! I only fill up about once a year, though.

freshasthebrightbluesky · 15/06/2019 10:05

Because I want to pay and talk to an actual person.

Because I want to pay in cash rather than on my card.

Because I might want to buy a bar of chocolate.

Because I might want 5 minutes' peace out of the car and away from my children.

MerryInthechelseahotel · 15/06/2019 10:19

OK fair point with the protection of jobs, but for emergency reasons I believe filling stations have to be manned in case of fire etc anyway I filled up yesterday on the way to Glasgow in an Asda petrol station that just had pumps with no office/shop to pay in. It looked very weird just having a row of pumps at the edge of a car park.

RedSheep73 · 15/06/2019 10:20

I don't get it either. I always assume either they are technophobes or they really want a packet of fags or something as well as the petrol.

jennymanara · 15/06/2019 10:41

I think getting out of my car and walking to the actual shop is good for me. I do exercise, but I am actively trying to do things that mean me walking more. All those tiny decisions add up.

derxa · 15/06/2019 11:24

I have an account at my local petrol station and have to sign for diesel and we don't have new fangled pay at pump machines.
I occasionally use Tesco pay at pump but usually I need fags.

tinytemper66 · 15/06/2019 11:46

Once we become automated for so many things, what kind do you think will be available? When I go onto a store I don't want to be served by a machine. It often isn't quicker. Also I really hate it when they say "no we don't have your size but we can order it for you." No! I want to buy it now and if I wanted to order it I would have done it rather than coming to the shop. I also add on that by coming to the shop I am keeping it open (or words to that effect!)
Which is why I use the kiosk!

Yabbers · 15/06/2019 12:09

But you can see the people come back to their car with no milk or sweets

They are in my pocket. Or I’ve bought a lottery ticket. Or a car wash ticket. Or anything else that you can’t see.

You want to use the machine, that’s fine, but if the shop is there, I would suspect it’s because the people who run it would want customers to use it.

Asda have done this for years.

HotChocolateLover · 15/06/2019 12:17

With Sainsbury’s I don’t think you can use your vouchers at the pump. The other day I had 10p off a litre which saved me £5.50 so I didn’t want to miss out on that.

JudgeRindersMinder · 15/06/2019 12:25

I pay cash . And like to annoy people who think we should all pay at the pump 😜

QuestionableMouse · 15/06/2019 12:26

I don't because I had a card skimmed once.

BigcatLittlecat · 15/06/2019 12:33

Forget that annoyance! What about the people that come back to their car and then take ages to start car up and leave! Especially when petrol station is busy!! Drives me to rage! What are they doing? Some kind of ceremonial routine? Praying to the gods? Or just faffing!

1forAll74 · 15/06/2019 12:37

I always pay with cash for petrol as I don't use that much fuel. But anyway,I am one of those people, who don't like automated things and scanning things. I don't much care who gets irritated .as in waiting a while.behind people in a queue in the garage shop.

BlackberryBeret · 15/06/2019 12:41

My local petrol station doesn't have this and I've not seen it.

I suspect one answer to the question is that chip and pin inside a shop is using a machine that is securely kept in the shop and not exposed to strangers tampering with it or inserting skiming devices.

A chip and pin outside on a petrol pump is vulnerable in the same way that a cashpoint machine is because it is external and not under lock and key 24/7

Laurajjj · 15/06/2019 21:12

Bigcat oh those people who return to the car and sit there fart arsing around with a que of cars behind do my swede in. I swear 9/10 I get stuck behind those people.

Do you not drive very much or does someone else do it for you?

A chip and pin outside on a petrol pump is vulnerable in the same way that a cashpoint machine is

That's a good point BlackberryBeret

I agree about people returning to their car and spending ages getting started. It is so annoying.

Ronsters · 15/06/2019 21:31

Whenever I've tried to pay at the pump it's always been a faff and the machine doesn't work/takes ages. Maybe I've been unlucky but I just go in and pay, it's easier.

Hardly anyone when I'm filling up pays at the pump so its either uniformly crap where I am or people just prefer going in.

I find the people who sit for ages once back in their cars, fuel paid for, more annoying

FreyaB84 · 15/06/2019 21:37

I used to work as a support worker for adults with autism. The people that I supported didn't have credit/debit cards so everything was paid for using cash. Obviously this meant I had to go into the shop to pay for petrol when filling up their cars.

PortiaCastis · 15/06/2019 22:06

Our nearest petrol station doesn't have pay at the pumps and why does it bother you so much?
