Something that annoys me about petrol stations

Why, when petrol stations have chip and pin at the pump do people waste time do go into the shop to pay yet buy nothing in the shop but pay for the petrol? Doesn't everyone have chin and pin cards now? It's a little pet hate of mine.

My card got cloned at a pay at the pump. Never again!

justbeniceplease · 14/06/2019 21:28

I wish you could press a button for £20 or however much and not faff trying not go 1p over

You can do this with loads of pumps nowadays

CrazyCatLady159 · 14/06/2019 21:29

Because I have a basic bank account and my card doesn't work in the pay at pump machines ...

RolyWatts · 14/06/2019 21:29

Because I think that the bastard at Morrisons petrol station stole my £5 voucher.... And now I go in to give him dirty looks.

EggysMom · 14/06/2019 21:29

Not only have I never had a card cloned at a petrol station, I even managed to leave my card on the pump one morning for three hours and it was still there when the attendant checked for me ... nobody had stolen it or tried to use it in the meantime!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/06/2019 21:30

Because I have a fuel card which has to have a human verify it matches my ID plus the car registration for it to be authorised.

Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2019 21:32

I have never had my card cloned at a Pay at the Pump. Just at the Tesco Express cash machine.

A local garage was in trouble for staff cloning cards though.

I usually go in store at the Tesco petrol stations, even if they have a pay at pump option. This is because I regularly get '10p off a litre of fuel' vouchers when I do my online Tesco shop, and I can't use the vouchers without going instore to pay. Maybe others are doing similar?

jennymanara · 14/06/2019 21:36

justbeniceplease I have seen that in the US, but never in the UK.

Totaldogsbody · 14/06/2019 21:37

I go in because the more people who use pay at the kiosk, self service or scan and pay the more chance that in the future there will be very few supermarket or bank jobs out there. You just need to look at how many checkouts have been replaced by self service or scan areas to see the impact on jobs this has had. Every self service point is a member of staff losing their job. Less cash being used means less people employed counting or delivering cash to shops. Mumsnet has a great green community but we need to take care of not only the world but the people.

3boysandabump · 14/06/2019 21:37

Because Sainsbury's kindly give me coupons with either money off my fuel or extra points and I would like to use it. For some reason although I can scan my nectar card at the pump I can't do my coupon.

Laurajjj · 14/06/2019 21:47

I never knew petrol pumps at a button to stop you going 1p over. I'll look out next time.

OK fair dues to the people with visa electron etc. I swear more people pay at the till than pump though. Surely not that many people have electron cards?

Eggys wow that's some good fortune.

OP posts:
Laurajjj · 14/06/2019 21:56

OK fair point with the protection of jobs, but for emergency reasons I believe filling stations have to be manned in case of fire etc anyway.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 14/06/2019 22:01

My reason has been stated. It takes days to leave my account and by then I might have accidentally already spent it, causing an unauthorised overdraft fee of £6 which then means my fuel has cost a lot more than it should. I live on the breadline-I wish I didn’t but that’s how it is. So piss off with your judgement about why people do something that you don’t want them to do.

justbeniceplease · 14/06/2019 22:03

Surely not that many people have electron cards?

It's not just electron, I named them as an example.

jennymanara · 14/06/2019 22:05

No the pumps at the supermarket I use do not have a button to stop you going over.

BackforGood · 14/06/2019 22:15
  1. You can't use your 'double nectar points' voucher at the Pay at the pump
  2. There are very, very, very rarely any receipts available from Pay at the Pump, even those that ask, and I need them for claiming work mileage

but for emergency reasons I believe filling stations have to be manned in case of fire etc anyway.

the local ASDA store is all pay at the pump - never any staff there that I have seen (there is no kiosk)

Tigger001 · 14/06/2019 22:24

Surely a fair point is......some people deal in cash, so prefer to pay in cash. I pay for most things in cash.

goingtotown · 14/06/2019 22:27

Pay at pump doesn’t issue Nectar vouchers or accept them that’s why I pay at the kiosk.

AlexaAmbidextra · 14/06/2019 22:31

Well if you pay at pump why does it bother you if others go into the shop? How does it affect you and how do you even know? Confused. You obviously need to get out more.

AlexaAmbidextra · 14/06/2019 22:36

but for emergency reasons I believe filling stations have to be manned in case of fire etc anyway.

No they don’t. My local Tesco is unmanned overnight as you can pay at the pumps.

Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2019 22:40

The buttons that you can press for exact amounts aren't by the rest of the buttons, they are up next to the digital display, so it might be you haven't seen them.

No staff at the Tesco that's open all night with 4 Pay at the Pumps only.

user1497787065 · 14/06/2019 22:42

I pay at the pump so I'm not tempted to buy sweeties.
