Something that annoys me about petrol stations

Why, when petrol stations have chip and pin at the pump do people waste time do go into the shop to pay yet buy nothing in the shop but pay for the petrol? Doesn't everyone have chin and pin cards now? It's a little pet hate of mine.

Because petrol. Costs more than £30

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 14/06/2019 20:56

A) I’ve had my card cloned at a pump and

B) as someone else said most pay at pumps put a hold on your account for approx £90. Last time this happened, that £90 was held by Asda for 4 days despite having charged me the accurate amount (£25) on the first day. That seriously pisses me off even if I have the financial cushion for it.

You can have £99 worth.

Michaelbaubles · 14/06/2019 21:02

You can never use your points card at them unless you have the full sized one - I use a fob Tesco Clubcard and Morrison’s More card, the two I use most often at petrol stations, and they never work at the pay at pump ones. Also, as someone else said, you can’t use any extra point vouchers either.

ginandnappies · 14/06/2019 21:03

Maybe they need to buy something? Maybe they need to pay cash?..

justbeniceplease · 14/06/2019 21:04

Not all cards are accepted by pay at pump.

Podemos · 14/06/2019 21:04

Reasons I sometimes pay in the shop:

  1. I need a receipt to put in for work- the pay at pump receipt roll very frequently runs out
  2. I have a money off coupon
  3. I want to pay in cash - maybe end of month and I have £20 in purse but nothing in bank.
  4. I have a voucher scheme I can buy into at work so need to go in to use vouchers
  5. I have a supermarket loyalty fob which you can't get points on at pump
  6. I want to buy chewing gum which you would unlikely see me pick up and carry out
Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2019 21:05

I always scan my Tesco Club Card fob at the Tesco one and it's fine. It works the same as releasing a handset for Scan as you Shop.

BetterEatCheese · 14/06/2019 21:05

They don't accept my debit card for some reason so I have to go in

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 14/06/2019 21:07

You forgot number 7

  1. Because I bloody well want to.
Limer · 14/06/2019 21:07

Both my reasons have been previously mentioned - first time I tried everything worked fine except that it couldn't print a receipt, and I need a business receipt. And sometimes I have a double/triple Nectar points coupon that can only be scanned in the kiosk.

If people can use chip and pin in the supermarket then why not at a petrol station pump?

Because all cards are not accepted. Lots of people have basic bank accounts and the debit card won't pre authorise any transactions.

hugoagogo · 14/06/2019 21:16

What? They called the police?Shock

TinselAngel · 14/06/2019 21:18

I like to encourage businesses to continue to employ people.

Why do you care?

The fuel station I hobti still has a chap who fills up for you and I pay with a fuel card.

Shoot me now.

UrsulaPandress · 14/06/2019 21:21

Hobti?

Go to.

Comefromaway · 14/06/2019 21:22

If you have a business fuel card account or need a VAT receipt you often have to go in.

Awrite · 14/06/2019 21:22

I don't want jobs to go.

Same with self service checkouts.

ginandbearit · 14/06/2019 21:23

I wish you could press a button for £20 or however much and not faff trying not go 1p over

jennymanara · 14/06/2019 21:24

Our local supermarket petrol station has 2 pay at the pimps and the rest you pay in the shop. Depends on queues which will be quickest.

Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2019 21:26

There is a button, it's by the display.
