Cost of making eastenders..

Whisky2014 · 01/06/2019 23:11

I just wondered how much it costs to make Eastenders and after just clicking a few articles on this I have found it to be about £140k per episode...£30 million a year.

Not only that, but the BBC had a £60 Million budget to upgrade the set and they have managed to go £27 million over this bringing it to £87 million and to be completed by 2023, 5 years late.
"MPs heard the set, built in 1984, is “no longer fit for purpose” and the rebuild is “crucial to the future success of EastEnders"

Well, sorry but it's absolute brain rot and if rather it didn't have a future! I'd much rather they made some good quality series. If they put their mind to it, the BBC can make some really good stuff. Why do they insist on shoving this crap down people's throats? Viewing numbers have been decreasing, I assume because of the younger generations being more inclined to watch stuff on Amazon and Netflix etc, so this revamp seems like even more of a waste. Confused

The stories are repeated every few years; love triangles and mother/daughters after 1 man, affairs, who’s the daddy baby storylines. There’s nothing new about EE!! It’s a shit show for people with short term memory loss 🤣🤣

Then, given you're in Scotland watch BBC Scotland.

On right now - Natural World: My Congo, at 7.30 Britain's Ancient Capital: Secrets of Orkney, at 9pm (Could you bear to stay up late enough) Scotland's Superhospital.

Honestly how anyone could think the BBC aren't showing enough documentaries I have no idea.

Usuallyinthemiddle · 02/06/2019 17:29

I don't watch Eastenders but I don't want educating by documentary all evening either, thank you! My days are taxing enough.

If you seriously object, don't watch or listen to any bbc tv or radio shows live or on t'interweb and don't pay your license fee.

There's plenty channels to choose from. Or a book.

Whisky2014 · 02/06/2019 17:30

I have been watching BBC Scotland, quite happy with that so far.
I just had a quick look at BBC 1 and there's literally nothing I'd watch except the documentaries listed above and also gentleman jack which I haven't seen and will have to see on I player to catch up.
But fucking flog it! Pointless, doctors God majority is utter bollocks.

OP posts:
Whisky2014 · 02/06/2019 17:33

Oh god documentaries was one example. I also mentioned Dickensian, the painting thing etc earlier, bodyguard etc
These things are few and far between which is ashame because they are so good. And the majority of the time is filler shite.

But yes, I guess I will have to just stop using BBC and I expect others will too. That's the only way to bring about real change

Can you name any quiz shows, documentaries, dramas that are shown as much as eastenders and have run for as long as eastenders and are made by the BBC?

There are loads of BBC shows that are longer running than Eastenders that you might deem "worthy". Things like Panorama, Blue Peter, Newsnight, Question Time, Antiques Roadshow, The Sky at Night, The South Bank Show, University Challenge, Mastermind, Gardener's World, Horizon, Doctor Who, Songs of Praise etc.

Usuallyinthemiddle · 02/06/2019 17:37

I don't think everyone wants your view of real change. I love Pointless. I'm not giving it up because you want real change! Shan't!

Try BB4 for size, maybe?

*I also didn't enjoy Bodyguard... and I'm not rotting of brain yet...

Whisky2014 · 02/06/2019 17:39

I asked for ones that are shown as much as eastenders though so are any of them on 4 days a week?

OP posts:
Whisky2014 · 02/06/2019 17:40

Usuallyinthemiddle so you love 1 show of the BBC? Anything else?

OP posts:
Passthecherrycoke · 02/06/2019 17:41

Blue peter and newsnight are/ have been daily.

Whisky2014 · 02/06/2019 17:42

Yah, so blue Peter aimed at kids and newsnight...woo

OP posts:
Passthecherrycoke · 02/06/2019 17:43

Well you asked! What is your problem?

Usuallyinthemiddle · 02/06/2019 17:46

But the point being, we all like different things. Hmm and you're proposing to remove the ones you don't like!
I'm fighting you for pointless! But I'll give you Flog it. That's shite!

My husband won't give up Antiques Roadshow for anything. He might concede Doctors now Mrs Tembe has gone (I know. Don't ask)

BasinHaircut · 02/06/2019 17:48

Can you name any quiz shows, documentaries, dramas that are shown as much as eastenders and have run for as long as eastenders and are made by the BBC?

Well if they were as popular as EE then they would have been going as long wouldn’t they? Grin

I must admit I watch it out of habit because it is sometimes utter dross (the new Ben is fucking shocking), but usually binge watch a weeks’ worth at a time when DS is in bed and DH is out rather than settle down at 7:30 every night.

BUT I love it at the same time. It’s total escapism and a bit of a guilty pleasure. I can assure you it’s not reflective of my home or life at all, and I get quite enough mental and scientific stimulation from my job so don’t need a gritty documentary at 7pm every evening. I’m usually exercising then anyway.

OP why don’t you find something to do that isn’t watch TV if it all offends you so much! Wink

slipperywhensparticus · 02/06/2019 17:50

From what I've seen it just portrays the scummy side of life the druggies and thieves etc etc if thsts your interest then fine it really isnt mine which explains why I haven't willingly watched it for about 20 years

Whisky2014 · 02/06/2019 17:52

BasinHaircut I don't watch loads of tv, I do prefer to read. I'm just sad at the offerings when I do watch. 🤷‍♀️

OP posts:
Usuallyinthemiddle · 02/06/2019 17:53

It would presumably cost as much to make if it were shown on bbc2
It's really cheap telly to make because it's same cast , crew, set etc.

gamerchick · 02/06/2019 17:58

I'm not going to deny I'm a t.v snob. If anything, that's a good thing

It is, it's a good maker to give you a swerve at parties. Grin

Don't like it, don't watch it. I don't want educational bollocks on the telly. It's supposed to be switch your mind off shite.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 02/06/2019 18:01

Well we generally watch Amazon and Netflix because there's always just shit on BBC

So how come you catch ‘stenders when you are flicking through the tv that you don’t watch because you are reading?

I never watch I’m a Celebrity, X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent. I’ve managed to never see any of it. However a lot of people seem to like them.

PCohle · 02/06/2019 18:03

I thought you liked variety? Now you're annoyed the BBC isn't showing some shows multiple times a week? Grin

I'm not sure why the BBC has to be showing the same documentary series for it to count in your book. They demonstrably are showing at least one documentary every single night.

Whisky2014 · 02/06/2019 19:09

So how come you catch ‘stenders when you are flicking through the tv that you don’t watch because you are reading Because when we switch the tv on it seems to just go to a random tv channel before we can click the app for Amazon or Netflix.

OP posts:
gamerchick · 02/06/2019 19:20

It usually goes back to the channel you were watching last. Maybe your OH is watching it on the sly, like in secret.

Processedpea · 02/06/2019 19:23

The rebuilding of the set has completely gone over budget and it's only just started so costs will probably go up some more ! They do seem to be investing in it so let's hope it's still popular in 50 years after the rebuild.
