Cost of making eastenders..

Whisky2014 · 01/06/2019 23:11

I just wondered how much it costs to make Eastenders and after just clicking a few articles on this I have found it to be about £140k per episode...£30 million a year.

Not only that, but the BBC had a £60 Million budget to upgrade the set and they have managed to go £27 million over this bringing it to £87 million and to be completed by 2023, 5 years late.
"MPs heard the set, built in 1984, is “no longer fit for purpose” and the rebuild is “crucial to the future success of EastEnders"

Well, sorry but it's absolute brain rot and if rather it didn't have a future! I'd much rather they made some good quality series. If they put their mind to it, the BBC can make some really good stuff. Why do they insist on shoving this crap down people's throats? Viewing numbers have been decreasing, I assume because of the younger generations being more inclined to watch stuff on Amazon and Netflix etc, so this revamp seems like even more of a waste. Confused

I'm not going to deny I'm a t.v snob. If anything, that's a good thing..

I'd rather they get rid of the dross they call day time TV or mundane bollocks like The Apprentice

EastEnders probably pays for itself with reselling around the world.

Emmabryant123 · 02/06/2019 16:21

I don't think EastEnders is on enough
I'd welcome a 5th episode each week

Been watching EastEnders since 2005.
Love it

MummySharkDoodoododoo · 02/06/2019 16:21

How are they "shoving it down people's throats"? Surly only those who want to see it, watch it? If you don't like it you just don't bother? Can't see the issue

Whisky2014 · 02/06/2019 16:23

00100001 yep, mundane, boring brain rot. Get rid of it all.

We all have different likes and dislikes, and enjoy different programmes, so surely there should be a good variety to appeal to all viewers? Your opinion about the programme is not fact, it is merely your opinion. Others will love it, and it will be the highlight of the week.

Presumably they reclaim some of the costs by selling it overseas also?

Soaps do play a role in raising awareness of important issues. I don't know if you saw the EE episode on knife crime, where the story was interspersed with real life clips from the families of victims. It was incredibly powerful and poignant.

Whisky2014 · 02/06/2019 16:29

MummySharkDoodoododoo because it's on so much. I don't see any other tv series running most days of the week and for so long. If it's a series it's 3 to 8 episodes and then completed. To have soaps running for years and years is bloody boring.

Whisky2014 · 02/06/2019 16:31

Your opinion about the programme is not fact, it is merely your opinion. I know, I didn't say otherwise.

I'm aware of social issues and it's certainly not via a soap.

The BBC are obliged to provide programming for everyone. The huge viewing figures for EE suggests it’s important to a huge number of people - it’s not going anywhere. £140k an episode doesn’t seem much to me

Emmabryant123 · 02/06/2019 16:36

🙄
What's the point of this ?

Plenty of people do watch it which is why it's on as much as it is ...

Bore off

PCohle · 02/06/2019 16:36

How do you know it's absolute brain rot if you don't watch it?

Paying the licence fee doesn't mean you get personally decide what is and isn't worthy of being broadcast. I never listen to radio one anymore, that doesn't mean I feel entitled to demand it's taken off the airways

00100001 · 02/06/2019 16:38

So, basically all TV shows have to go through a check from you to see if they're deemed good enough to show??

sidsgranny · 02/06/2019 16:40

As an ex BBC employee I can assure you that only a very tiny percentage of their money comes from the License fee. Most of it is from selling programmes abroad. So I'd actually check your facts before getting on your high horse OP.

ForalltheSaints · 02/06/2019 16:42

It does not seem expensive for a tv show, much as I would like it to be reduced to say 2 shows per week or even cancelled.

Regardless it is better spent than even £1 on the garbage that is Mrs Browns Boys.

Bluebluered · 02/06/2019 16:46

It’s a shit programme for people living a mundanely boring life with no worries. I have enough drama to deal with in my life and it depressed me further. I watched it through all the council bins storylines and honestly it fried my brain.

It’s just a cheap thrills show for old Aunty Mabels whose only worry is about what to cook for dinner.
The EE thread on here is so sad. I read through it once and it so pathetic how they get worked up over spoilers. Like finding out Dot is going to the doctors a week before is really going to ruin your life isn’t it🙄😂🤣

LimitIsUp · 02/06/2019 16:48

I do not watch Eastenders and think it's bilge, but if it is popular and gets good ratings then it merits ongoing investment. It's not all about my preferences

Illberidingshotgun · 02/06/2019 16:49

But other people may be informed about social issues through a soap.

What would you prefer to see in that slot, that would appeal to a wide audience?

FannyFeatures · 02/06/2019 16:54

I quite like EastEnders.

Blue Planet and Strictly Come Dancing bored the shit out of me but I don't expect them to be cancelled because I don't like them... What an odd thought process!

Usuallyinthemiddle · 02/06/2019 16:54

Making one programme consistently is cheaper than several shorter shows. Also consistently sold abroad.

Whisky2014 · 02/06/2019 16:55

Bore off no.
00100001

So, basically all TV shows have to go through a check from you to see if they're deemed good enough to show?? nope. Have I said that?

How do you know it's absolute brain rot if you don't watch it? because if you change a channel and it's on you inadvertently watch bits of it, or it's replayed on other shows as references, my mum used to watch it 20 years ago so I've seen it then. Etc etc it's not hard to know what it's like. Every scene is shouting and just utterly ridiculous shite. Is it reminiscent of the viewers households?

OP posts:
PuppyMonkey · 02/06/2019 16:55

I gave EastEnders up at the beginning of last year, and I'm currently in the process of giving up Corrie because they are both shite now. I really need a Soap Addicts Anonymous group to go to for support or something. Grin

I don't mind them continuing to spend money on the show though. But I don't like quizzes much. Or sport of any kind. Save the £££s by banning them, I say.

Whisky2014 · 02/06/2019 16:56

But blue plant and strictly only lasts x amount of episodes over a month or 2. So not comparable.

OP posts:
FannyFeatures · 02/06/2019 16:58

Oh I see, it's one of those threads 🤫🙄

Whisky2014 · 02/06/2019 16:58

Maybe documentaries covering a wide array of topics.
They did a good painting challenge or something ages ago, that was good.
