Why does nobody on Mumsnet ever have one degree?

It’s either at least 2, possibly 3 and one a Masters probably from Oxbridge, or left school with one GCSE in home economics......

@RevokeRemainohsodit I never understood either. But I'm itching to get another one :) I like learning. But it's got so expensive that I can't justify the cost. I'm doing coursera (free) courses that would actually add up to a lot if they were accredited.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/04/2019 23:17

I've got two but TBF the first was a waste of time and energy and I worked through the second, more useful, one.

I don't understand how you get 4 degrees.

People do them while doing other things. Working, raising kids, they fit around other things.

RB68 · 05/04/2019 23:18

I have two plus a range of professional post grad stuff but think anyone that goes for two Ms must be M for masochist.... I wld go to the next level but it took me 20 yrs to get over the M!!!

People tend to mention what makes them unique, rather than 'default' features. Mumsnet is aimed at middle-class British mothers. The average middle-class British woman will have A-levels, a degree or the professional equivalent, so Mumsnet posters with those qualifications won't bother to mention it

That makes perfect sense.

RevokeRemainohsodit · 05/04/2019 23:18

Colehawkins - thanks, I understand now.

BIWI · 05/04/2019 23:20

I had reason to get out my CV yesterday, and I'd actually forgotten about the number of qualifications I have!

As well as my 4 A-levels I have an S-level. No idea if they do those these days.

And I have two post-grad qualifications. One is a professional one, and the other is a post-grad secretarial diploma, which got me into the profession in the first place.

I also have a Blue Peter badge.

chicabowwow · 05/04/2019 23:22

I've just got one. And tbh I scraped that.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/04/2019 23:22

For a researcher or an academic, three (Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate) is standard.

Back in the day a lot of scientists just did BSc and PhD, no masters.

I've noticed a thread on the perennial Ms/Miss/Mrs debate always flushes out a lot of Drs Grin

Two, am 40. I also have aspergers and am generally useless...

Groovee · 05/04/2019 23:24

I don't have a degree

Pengrin · 05/04/2019 23:24

I have 4. One leads to another. Then you realise the first 2 are a pile of shit that won’t get you anywhere so you do another which leads to the next one. Then you die.

TapasForTwo · 05/04/2019 23:25

I don't have a degree. Just O levels, A levels, a foundation in accounting certificate and a CIM certificate.

OH has three - a BSc, a PhD and an MBA.

Passmethecrisps · 05/04/2019 23:25

cheers london

My husband has a few degrees. He collects them. I would like a masters and did try to get one but didn’t manage.

All of my pals went on to get firsts and then PhDs. I am the sole doofus.

None from oxbridge though.

DonnaDarko · 05/04/2019 23:25

I have a single BSc I don't use lol

Bythebeach · 05/04/2019 23:25

Only because I bloody didn’t work out what I wanted to do at 18 so I have 2 normal degrees....no PhDs etc!

colehawlins · 05/04/2019 23:29

Two, am 40. I also have aspergers and am generally useless...

I bet you're nothing of the sort Thanks

SilverHeartsOnStrings · 05/04/2019 23:30

I didn't even make it through college.

Am I the token dummy?

myhamsteratefreddiestarr · 05/04/2019 23:31

I don’t have a degree but did get a professional NVQ4 in my 20’s which is equivalent to a Foundation Degree or something.

Now in my 40’s I would love to do a degree in counselling or psychology but don’t have the time or money.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 05/04/2019 23:31

Aw thanks. I sort of am though. If I was Male I'd probably be terribly successful if I was the selfish type...

TalkinPaece · 05/04/2019 23:33

Three degrees

TalkinPaece · 05/04/2019 23:34

Three more degrees

TalkinPaece · 05/04/2019 23:35

Six degrees

PissOffPeppa · 05/04/2019 23:35

I know someone with three undergraduate degrees. All completely unrelated. He hopes to do a masters too.

I can’t decide if I think this is amazing or ridiculous.

Elliss2018 · 05/04/2019 23:35

I have one degree, very proud of it too! Quite fancy doing a masters in a few years Grin

Dowser · 05/04/2019 23:36

Ok then ..half a one
