Please talk me into buying a label maker. Or are they a waste of money?

I keep looking at label makers, thinking one would be useful.

Dh keeps stroking my hand slowly and giving me looks of pity when I harp on about buying one.

If you have one, what items/things do you, or have you, label/labelled?
Have you bought one and found it to be a waste of time or money?

I don’t have children, but I like gardening and cookery, so if you think they are useful for those, please talk me into buying one.
Thanks in advance 💐💐💐

...oh and please will you tell me the make and model that you use, or would recommend.
Thanks again.

Label makers are the best. Just think about all the joy you could have labelling stuff. You will also need stick on googly eyes.

Etihad · 21/12/2018 09:06

I absolutely love my label maker. I label all the things!! It’s a Brother one. It has a choice of text sizes and type faces and you can do most symbols too.

The machine itself wasn’t too expensive but the refills can cost a fortune. Amazon do unofficial refills which are almost as good so I can label away to my heart’s content.

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 21/12/2018 09:07

I want one too!

Everything would be labelled.

My grandad organised his kitchen cupboards with a coloured sticker system and had an index in a folder so you could find stuff.

Imagine what you could do with a label machine! You could have a system with a cupboard number, then each shelf, location on the shelf!!!

So vanilla would be indexed as cupboard 01.2F - cupboard 1, second shelf at the front.

No more people asking where stuff is - just look in the index folder.

CarrieBlu · 21/12/2018 09:09

Following this, I would love a label maker!

MeetOnTheSIedge · 21/12/2018 09:16

We've got a small Brother one. I use it for labelling jars of homemade jam, chutney etc, also labelling plugs and chargers, which is extremely useful. Not much else though.

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 21/12/2018 09:17

I love my label maker.
I have the old school embosser style one and use it surprisingly often!

PillarsOfTheEarth · 21/12/2018 09:20

I have one. All my jars in my kitchen are labelled. I've had hours of fun sorting out the Xmas decorations this year and labelling those boxes.

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 21/12/2018 09:38

Ah, I was looking at the Brother one earlier, and the Dymo range.
I quite fancy the qwerty keyboard idea too.
Labelling Xmas decorations, eh? hmm...🤔.
Plugs and chargers, very useful.....
Seeds in greenhouse.
FGS 😂.

@Etihad, the Brother one is really appealing to me, thanks for the heads up about the refills.

I bought one. Sits in the drawer because the labels just fall off everything I want to label. Waste of money

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 21/12/2018 09:46

Sorry to hear that @Numberonecook.

I'm a keen gardener (allotmenter) but haven't found any gardening related uses for it at all.

sackrifice · 21/12/2018 09:48

I wanted one but then I discovered chalk pens.

Leave it to set and it doesn't wash away.

We have slate down as a mulch so I just pick a piece of flat slate up and write on that.

Or write on the side of the seed tray, or plant pot, or on the edge of the raised bed. Or for perennials I buy long slate labels and write on those.

I did a workshop with loads of primary schools and when they waltzed off for the final assembly I hung their kokedamas onto the window knobs and wrote the school name above their collection of things to take home.

I use them to label jam jars, and for the gluten free pasta in kilner jars.

I write the tomato or cucumber variety in the greenhouse windows at the top of the string they will grow up.

They are fantastic.

CarcerDun · 21/12/2018 09:57

I managed to get work to buy one (for me). It's a dymo and I have a fully labelled office. It makes me so happy. I hadn't thought of having one at home... runs off to look at Amazon

MeetOnTheSIedge · 21/12/2018 10:01

I like the sound of the chalk pens - does it scrub off when you need it to?

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 21/12/2018 10:07

Hmm, I might have to look at the chalk pens for gardening @sackrifice.

I'm getting an embossing label maker for Christmas. It's the thing I'm most excited about 😁

GrouchyKiwi · 21/12/2018 10:23

I have a Dymo label maker and, frankly, it is more fun than it should be. DH also looks at me pityingly when I talk about making labels, but then I make him one with a Border! And Pictures! and he then begins to see the appeal.

I have labelled the children's toy drawers in our beautiful storage unit, and boxes of things, and tubs in the pantry, and my husband's phone when we had the same model.

Bliss3333 · 21/12/2018 10:23

I have one and my daughter teased me mercilessly for labelling all the things. But I got the last laugh when she woke up one morning with a 'daughter' label on her forehead.

My only issue with mine is that it doesn't do anything fancy. And sometimes I want fancy. Also - chalk markers are fantastic.

Sitranced · 21/12/2018 10:43

Blackboard paint and chalk pens are much more versatile, less waste and look better

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 21/12/2018 10:47

I am really looking forward to receiving mine now 🙂.
I might do the same to dh @bliss3333 it’ll serve him right for teasing me also.
Plus, he has a shed with loads of storage in it.. let’s see how appealing it’ll become then 🤔😂

WinkysTeatowel · 21/12/2018 10:57

Mine makes me happy! It's ridiculous but when I suddenly think of something to label I am very pleased Grin
Freezer drawers labelled, spice jars, lots of things for nursery, oven hood where the writing came off. Switches for washing machine etc.

FraterculaArctica · 21/12/2018 11:07

I want one of these too. I need to label spice jars. Are the labels ok for naming school stuff, do they work as well as the preprinted ones you can order?

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 21/12/2018 11:09

The world is rapidly becoming my oyster at the uses!
It’s not due until 9th Jan so I’ll have to sit on my hands until then.

I want to buy some plain spice jars for my spice rack, so they look tidy rather than the shop bought jars I currently have.

I have also bought some chalk pens for gardening, great ideas there, thank you.💐
