Please talk me into buying a label maker. Or are they a waste of money?

I keep looking at label makers, thinking one would be useful.

Dh keeps stroking my hand slowly and giving me looks of pity when I harp on about buying one.

If you have one, what items/things do you, or have you, label/labelled?
Have you bought one and found it to be a waste of time or money?

I don’t have children, but I like gardening and cookery, so if you think they are useful for those, please talk me into buying one.
Thanks in advance 💐💐💐

I clicked on the link to the Dymo label maker and Amazon tells me I purchased this on 11 Oct 2010 - I had forgoten I’d previously bought one! 😂

I can't help but think of the simpsons episode when Bart got a label maker and put the radio and walkie talkee down the well Grin

BonnesVacances · 21/12/2018 20:47

I love my label maker! I use it to label:

  • plugs so I know which one I'm unplugging.
  • cables/ chargers by wrapping them around the cable, as in how bread bags are closed.
  • DC's shoes by sticking it under the tongue.
  • the tabs on hanging files in our filing cabinet
  • DC's plastic wallets for homework/ each subject

DH takes the piss relentlessly but I know he's secretly full of admiration.

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 21/12/2018 21:01

I must check the Simpsons episode out 🙂.

It's one of the better episodes. Bart tricks people thinking there is a child stuck down the well. The town people record a charity benefit song and everything Grin

Longdistance · 21/12/2018 21:09

I have a Dymo label maker at work. It’s so much fun 😃

sackrifice · 21/12/2018 21:11

I use a fine chalk pen for my plugs. Sorry.

notacooldad · 21/12/2018 21:16

I use ours a lot.
The spice jars are labelled up, food in the freezer is named and dated, files are organised and named and so on.

DP usually does a a head tilt and says ' you ok, Hun?'When I go into one of my labelling frenzies!

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 21/12/2018 22:05

@lynnepot, I will have a look at that episode...

Get one!

The most useful thing I use mine for is labelling homemade frozen meals - what they are and the date they went into the freezer.

MrsBobBlackadder · 21/12/2018 22:14

I got a Dymo label maker about six months ago and I LOVE it. DH finds it amusing that he keeps discovering new things that I've carefully labelled; including, on one memorable occasion, the cat Xmas Smile

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 21/12/2018 22:18

@Sarge17, I have one on order 🙂.
Can’t wait now.
I haven’t got a cat, but my NDN has a dog....

I have two, one old style embosser and a sparkly Dymo laser label printer. I run my own business so officially they are for work but I do enjoy labelling everything in my home too.

Of course the first thing you do with a label maker is make one for the label maker saying 'BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast's Label Maker'.

Samcro · 21/12/2018 23:03

i love mine.....But OMG changing the tape is a nightmare

ReflectentMonatomism · 21/12/2018 23:09

One of the secret hidden joys of Brother label makers is stencil tape, which you can use to make "labels" which you then spray paint through.

I keep meaning to replace my Brother, which is slightly painful to keep running (requires a hodge-podge of virtual machines and adapters as it (a) needs Windows XP and (b) needs a serial cable) but it's brilliant: does everything up to 36mm tape, and is apparently indestructable. It was expensive back then - I think I paid about £150 about fifteen years ago - but the newer ones are a lot cheaper.

12FreeRangeEggs · 22/12/2018 07:09

Label makers are life changing. Buy one.

Everything in our house has a label. DD got in on the act too but took it too far and the dog was walking around with a “Dog” label at one point. It did improve her spelling though.

The best are the plastic coated one, they have been on DC’s school water bottles for the whole year and no sign of moving, and they go in the dishwasher most evenings. Amazing.

DH moaned about the not being able to put his clothes where he wanted in his drawers and being dictated to by labels but hey, he is way more organised now.

simplepimple · 22/12/2018 07:32

My Brother one connects to my laptop to make creation fast and easy ~ she's labelled Big Bertha. I luffs her.

GrouchyKiwi · 22/12/2018 08:10

I home educate so as well as the label maker we have a laminator and a glue gun and I think they should advertise that more as one of the perks. Stationery-based technology is fun.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 22/12/2018 08:17

I got a Dymo label maker as it could make iron on labels, which I thought would make doing school uniform a lot easier.
They're a bit crap and falls off. However, I have used the paper labels for a lot of things, including my son's Box of Precious Things. And my spices.

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 22/12/2018 08:27

Update:
I bought my Brother label maker yesterday at £19.99.
It has now gone up to £30 😄😄.
Really pleased 👍

DH has one, he has irritated me this morning as he has spread all the contents of his work bag across the kitchen table and gone out to park run. I may make a I am a messy twat label and stick it on his back without his knowledge.

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 22/12/2018 09:38

@Adversecamber22 😂.

I have since found out that the cartridges are cheaper on Ebay, if only slightly.

I don’t see the appeal. I just use peel off while paper stickers and a pen to label things at home. Am I stuck in the dark ages?
