Please talk me into buying a label maker. Or are they a waste of money?

I keep looking at label makers, thinking one would be useful.

Dh keeps stroking my hand slowly and giving me looks of pity when I harp on about buying one.

If you have one, what items/things do you, or have you, label/labelled?
Have you bought one and found it to be a waste of time or money?

I don’t have children, but I like gardening and cookery, so if you think they are useful for those, please talk me into buying one.
Thanks in advance 💐💐💐

@hmmwhatatodo no, you’re not stuck in the dark ages, it’s just a case of each to their own 🙂.

I’m getting worried about excited I’m getting 😂.
It’s annoying though, that I have to buy an ac adaptor separately.
I’ve got the batteries, so at least I can use it straight away (needs to get out more).

If you're the kind of person who likes to be organised then they're Nirvana.

I've had a Brother P-Touch 1280 for years and I love it.

HillsBesideTheSea · 22/12/2018 15:11

hmmwhatatodo i think it depends how your handwriting is. I hate my handwriting. Loathe and detest how it looks. For me a label maker is far less faff than trying to get a label on the computer and then printed out on the label, the right way up, in the light place etc etc. Thus I really appreciate my label maker for labelling files, organising etc.

Never thought of using it for form filling though, that is almost genius.

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 22/12/2018 16:19

@HilllsBesideTheSea, my handwriting is shocking, so that’s another plus point for me.
My label printer has been dispatched and will arrive earlier than estimated, which is fab news 🙂.

I label the top edge of everyone's drawers to indicate what goes where. e.g. Pants, PJs, socks etc.

Also put labels on storage boxes, large & small. Another vote for switches - we have a rental property and it helps to identify all the random switches in a kitchen.

I've also got a laminator and a guillotine. Very handy.

hmmwhatatodo · 22/12/2018 17:29

I wouldn’t say I love my handwriting either. I watched a couple of YouTube videos after reading this thread and it looks like an even bigger faff than I imagined. Some people have a whole collection of the gadgets!

I bought chalkboard labels from amazon and use posca pens for permanent labels. Chalk pens for temporary ones.

I’d like a label maker though. Maybe.

HermioneWaslib · 22/12/2018 17:56

I’d recommend vinyl chalkboard labels (in a variety of sizes from eBay) to go with your chalk pen

And iron on label tape to go with your label maker.

RaisinRainbow · 22/12/2018 20:01

Oh label makers are great - game changing I would say. I fantasised over one for years - my inner Monica Geller!
Recently I bought on Amazon (tip: warehouse deals!) as it was a requirement for my current culinary training certification to organise and label various foodstufss.
I find it ridiculously satisfying to create order in this way, and visitors to my home have commented on how impressive it looks.
Another tip for the refill labels is to buy on 'Subscribe and Save' they are massively cheaper.

CrunchieFriday · 22/12/2018 20:44

Label makers are worth it for the linen cupboard alone!!

I also use sharpies a lot Blush

pomobrokemypogo · 23/12/2018 04:41

I can totally see the appeal but then think of the plastic so I'm making myself stick with chalk, pencil etc.

Labelling plugs is a life changer, even with my wonky handwritten labels! :)

LoniceraJaponica · 23/12/2018 09:55

Not trying to make anyone jealous, but I used to sell P-Touch labelmakers. I used to take the more feature heavy ones home to practice on so that I could demonstrate them to customers.
I now work for another company that sells them (but I'm not in sales any more, thank goodness)

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 23/12/2018 11:55

@LoniceraJaponica, I am jealous...

DH had one at work but was banned from using it after labelling everything, and I mean everything, on someone else's desk with his own name. He was the team manager so one of his team members had to confiscate and hide it.

I daren't have one at home, who knows what could happen to the children and cats.

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 23/12/2018 12:18

@buttyblahblah 😂.

Just imagine if Gareth Keenan got his hands on a label maker. We saw he was no stranger to labelling other things:

Tim (holding Gareth's stapler out of the window): I'm going to let this go, unless you stop acting like a fool.
Gareth: Well, you won't, so...
Tim (letting it go): Well, I have, so...
Gareth: What if that kills someone?
Tim: They'll think you're the murderer, it's got your name on it.
Gareth: Why would a murderer put his name on the murder weapon?
Tim: To stop people borrowing it?

Please talk me into buying a label maker. Or are they a waste of money?
oohyoudevilyou · 23/12/2018 19:02

Yes, you're being VVU buying a labelling machine. Write it on a scrap of paper, stick on with sellotape and give the money you save to the homeless.

Or just embrace the joy of looking in 43 different boxes, drawers and bags for the thingamagig you need, you sodding anal--retentive!! Wink

Tinkobell · 23/12/2018 19:53

I bought a Dymo label maker last year for use in our rented holiday cottage .....labels look less amateurish than my handwriting. To begin with I made sensible and needed labels such as "No Access" "Boiler is Pre-set" "Wifi code" etc etc.......once I'd done these labels I'm embarrassed to say I went a bit label bonkers and the labels come across and bossy and dictatorial. DH had to tell me to just tone the labels back a tad; otherwise they can come across as bossy boots and /or patronising.

Maremaremare · 23/12/2018 23:51

Maybe someone already suggested this ... but if I had a label maker I would do my linen cupboard, so I could have specific shelf space allocated for fitted sheets, flat sheets, duvet covers etc, separated by size of bed

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 24/12/2018 17:26

@oohyoudevilyou 😂
I’m happy to be anal-rententive 😂.

@Maremaremare furiously scribbling linen cupboard down on my list.

In the New Year, I’m going through my cupboards and flinging/keeping stuff, so all of this is coming in handy
My list is growing by the second 🙂.

We have just used our label maker to make tags for all of the Christmas presents. It was lovely.

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 24/12/2018 22:22

@GrouchyKiwi, did you use Xmas label tape?
I saw some advertised, but obviously too late to buy any.
Next year, though.....

OP posts:
GrouchyKiwi · 24/12/2018 22:25

No! I did not know it existed! ~adds it to list for next year~

Just boring white but with borders and pictures.
