Please talk me into buying a label maker. Or are they a waste of money?

I keep looking at label makers, thinking one would be useful.

Dh keeps stroking my hand slowly and giving me looks of pity when I harp on about buying one.

If you have one, what items/things do you, or have you, label/labelled?
Have you bought one and found it to be a waste of time or money?

I don’t have children, but I like gardening and cookery, so if you think they are useful for those, please talk me into buying one.
Thanks in advance 💐💐💐

I use chalk pens to write daily affirmations on my bathroom mirror. When doing a buffet I label the vegetarian options and crate a zone with a green chalk pen on the table (it's glass). I label the juice jugs and punch!

Sharpies to label up in the freezer. When kids come to play I also label the paper plate and cup they're using. I use the sharpie to label plugs.

I have a Dymo label printer for work things. I also use it to type out my answers to lengthy forms and then just stick my label in each box.

Lego pieces go in a plastic ziplock with a label on saying which set they are from.

AlanThePig · 21/12/2018 11:38

DH wanted one for years. In the end he bought a really fancy Dymo one of the local selling pages for a tenner.

I am not joking when I say he labeled half the house.

I know what the zones of the burglar alarm are. I didn't need 2" Fluorescent labels stuck to the box. Neither did I need the light switches labelling or the switch in the airing cupboard. Still;, kept him good for a while.

grouchy Borders?? Pictures??? I have one of the basic dymo embossing ones but I think I need what you’ve got!

Also where does one buy chalk pens? I’m sure they used to have them in wilko but they didn’t when I looked yesterday, I’ve left it too late to get one online before Christmas and I want one

GrouchyKiwi · 21/12/2018 12:03

It's this one Pippi. So cheap and happy.

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 21/12/2018 12:37

@PippilottaLongstocking, I have ordered some chalk pens from Ebay, but I won’t gett them until the New Year.
Will stationary stores sell them, I wonder.

I have a 6yo with ASD. A family friend got him a dymo for his birthday and it is his favourite thing in the world ever. There is nothing in my house that isn’t labelled. I’m constantly out and thinking my jumper or sock is uncomfortable and a quick root around unearths a ‘mum’s blue jumper’ or ‘one black sock’ label. Even the dymo is labelled.

letsgomaths · 21/12/2018 12:47

I have a Brother label maker. I bought it for labelling things around the house, but I found a really good use for it was indexing useful things in books, such as recipes: neater and more durable than post-its. Also good for indexing my study notes; and even better for little notes such as "this is my milk"! Somehow it's less effort than handwriting it on a piece of paper, and looks more official.

Shop around for the refills - they can be expensive, Google Shopping is your friend. I usually use the smallest font available on the machine, and use two lines of text instead of one.

And for fun, watch the Simpsons episode "Bart's label maker".

sackrifice · 21/12/2018 13:07

Even Sainsbury's and Tesco's sell them. 4 for a tenner.

CushieButterfield · 21/12/2018 13:19

Never use mine, was a bad purchase. But I do get decent use out of my laminator, which I bought at the same time!

themartinipolice · 21/12/2018 13:31

I labelled my labelmaker which makes me laugh every time I see it 😂

LoniceraJaponica · 21/12/2018 15:30

I have a Brother P-Touch labelmaker, and it is a thing of joy. I label all my spice jars, and have labelled loads of DVDs that we have recorded off the TV (yes, my labelmaker is several years old).

I have also labelled plugs and chargers.

BoringSoupBeforeTheTurkeyFeast · 21/12/2018 15:52

That’s it, I am now going to label my label maker (when it arrives).
I might call it Mabel to rhyme with label.
Mabel the label maker.
Oh dear.....

Thanks for all your input, by the way, very positive.
Sorry it hasn’t worked out for everybody.

Mabel the able labelmaker Grin

PigletJohn · 21/12/2018 16:32

I have a Brother one. It makes very neat labels for white switches such as "immersion heater" "dishwasher" "extractor fan".

But for anything that doesn't have to look quite so smart, I have for years been using Stabilo (Swan) write-4-all fibre tip pens, and white vinyl electricians tape. It also writes on wood, metal, plastic and glass, and I use it on garden plant labels and parts boxes.

I happened to be in a theatre recently and saw a label I had put on the House Lights dimmer before they relocated. They have been in the new building for around 20 years.

PigletJohn · 21/12/2018 16:34

and CDs/DVDs

the pen doesn't throw them off balance at high speed as much as a label does.

Gingefringe · 21/12/2018 17:14

I have the Dymo retro embossed one - It's fantastic - and cheap at around £10. I've labelled all of the chargers at home (my DH thought I was mad but the kids love it) and also stuff at work like my calculator, ruler, stapler etc so they don't get nicked.

Suzyloo · 21/12/2018 17:29

I clicked this thread to say surely you wouldn't use it much. But then...

pingoose · 21/12/2018 17:33

I have a Dymo and it’s changed my life. Every time I see my labelled photo albums I get all warm and fuzzy.

I put on on my Christmas list. That and a glue gun. If I don't get them I will be really sad.

April2020mom · 21/12/2018 18:43

I also have a label maker somewhere in my apartment. I use it for all my paperwork. When you have a large family they really can be handy believe me. Especially when labelling school supplies.

madmum5811 · 21/12/2018 18:53

Friend has a brother one. The only thing not labelled are the kids. I am lost in admiration, it is so useful. School stuff, office, kitchen.
