... how long could you survive with what you have in your house right now?

Do you have any tins/bottled water etc put away in case of a emergency?

Have been frealing myself out reading some wacky conspiray sites (all baging on about something huge happeneing in the next 2 weeks) - Im not be;lieveing it, but it has made me think that one day there could be an event and I probably would only last a week with my store cupboard!

I think fags and booze would be good for bartering. In theory anyway, they would be prized out of my cold dead hands in reality.

I keep meaning to get a doom cupboard, will be kicking myself if I survive lol.

SarahStrattonsSparkler · 03/11/2010 20:13

I'm starting my doom cupboard as soon as the work is finished on the house. Pointless now as I have nowhere to put anything.

Did anyone else watched the new zombie tv programme (with Egg from This Life and zombies)?

I got about halfway through the first episode and had to turn it off.

It doesn't matter how much food you have stashed away if you are turned into a zombie.

Unless you have a supply of tinned brains, I suppose.

CoinOperatedGirl · 03/11/2010 20:14

What is everyone's prefered apocalyptic scenario?

MaDuggar · 03/11/2010 20:15

Oh a doom cupboard! Love it!

Aliens for me. Pandemics are boring me now even though they are probably the most likely.

MaDuggar · 03/11/2010 20:15

Coin, the giant green fireball sounds good to me!

MaDuggar · 03/11/2010 20:17

Looks like The Agency have turned the green fireball into stone now, and it will hit South America and not cause much damage :(

OK well a bottle of rum is always a good start.

(although don't know why I am joking about this - I am about to fly home to a state of emergency, a flooded home and at least 14 people dead under mudslides Sad)

CoinOperatedGirl · 03/11/2010 20:21

I'd like a stand type scenario, where only a few survive. You could loot the deadies houses and live in buck palace (unless the queen's reptilian blood protected her Hmm)

Wouldn't want to survive a nuclear holocaust, I've seen threads .

SarahStrattonsSparkler · 03/11/2010 20:23

Me too Coin, if it has to happen I would prefer death as opposed to death and destruction. Makes it ever so slightly easier for the survivors IMO.

MaDuggar · 03/11/2010 20:24

Sorry stranded :(

SarahStrattonsSparkler · 03/11/2010 20:26

How awful stranded :(

MakemineaGandT · 03/11/2010 20:26

Even if you have a load of stuff put by it only means you'll last a matter of weeks/months longer than everyone else anyway. I think I'd rather just snuff it at the outset....

EightiesChick · 03/11/2010 20:26

Hmm, will bear this in mind when doing my Tesco shop for tomorrow. Already have a fair number of tins of beans, but as far as water goes we'd be falling back on caffeine free diet coke and wine. Hmm

We have NO proper survival equipment whatsoever but do have a lot of books that in extreme circumstances we could burn as per The Day After Tomorrow. Sad No tax law, sadly, but the later Patricia Cornwells would probably be the first to go.

strandeadatsea · 03/11/2010 20:28

No that's ok I don't want to bring down a good thread! Just thinking it was a little ironic as we are actually about to go back into a slightly apocolyptic situation! Hopefully we have missed the worst of it - where we live isn't as badly affected as parts of the island and although there are still huge water problems I understand power is mainly back at least.

As you were!

HowsTheSerenity · 03/11/2010 20:30

I have actually completed training in how to survive the apocolypse.

I have nothing. When the shit hits the fan all your plans go out the window. It is the ones who kill, loot and plunder who survive Grin

Dumbledoresgirl · 03/11/2010 20:33

I could manage without electricity (have an inordinate number of little candles for some reason) and gas (have a wood burning stove which can heat the whole house and could do some basic heating of food too.

Also have enough food for a week or two.

But no water? That would mean we could last about a day - unless the kids and I develop a taste for malt whisky and we start on dh's collection.

4plus1 · 03/11/2010 20:39

We live in the sticks so freezer and pantry is always well stocked. Also a lough at the end of the next field so prob could boil the water from that to drink. I have had conversations with dh, usually after armagedon movies when I've made him promise to get back home asap if something did happen.

mychatnickname · 03/11/2010 22:14

Don't read the website the OP's worries were triggered by if you are of a nervous disposition. I did and am veritably freaked out now Shock

CherryRocketMonster · 03/11/2010 22:34

well i have just looked at asda, and the bare essentials to last my family of 6 a month would set me back just over £50. i already have loads of medical stuff (inhalers, calpol, bandages etc), loo roll, candles, a wind up torch some batteries, string, knives and stuff. we all have heavy duty coats, wellies and trainers. i have a big 6 berth tent. getting there

vintageteacups · 03/11/2010 22:38

There was a timely asteroid programme on beeb 2 tonight!

vintageteacups · 03/11/2010 22:41

Blimey cherry. When I started my bird flu emergency collection, friends openly laughed at me! You're so organised. Online Tesco shop tomorrow - do they do wind up torches?

4plus1 · 03/11/2010 22:43

The solar sills link is very useful. I'm going to print that out, laminate it and put it in the doom box/ cupboard too
