... how long could you survive with what you have in your house right now?

Do you have any tins/bottled water etc put away in case of a emergency?

Have been frealing myself out reading some wacky conspiray sites (all baging on about something huge happeneing in the next 2 weeks) - Im not be;lieveing it, but it has made me think that one day there could be an event and I probably would only last a week with my store cupboard!

howdid - your DH isn't Ray mears by any chance? PMSL at "including giraffe size"!

Must get some stuff in then - we had a load of water purification stuff/stoves/candles/tinned food/medicines etc after bird flu scare but then ate it/chucked it.

SarahStrattonsSparkler · 03/11/2010 19:33

YY I saw that vintage, was rather scary and made me very glad that I live in a rural area. It's exactly that that scares me, not whatever causes it in the first place.

How exactly does one get hold of a geiger counter. I am much in awe of this and considering asking fellow Mumsnetters to compile the Definitive Survival List.

BeenBeta · 03/11/2010 19:35

Are we allowed to eat absolutey anything or are we assuming social niceities still apply?

BeenBeta relax. No-one will be made to eat processed bread or drink frootshoots. Basic MN rules apply, even in the apocalypse.

SarahStrattonsSparkler · 03/11/2010 19:37

Social niceties will prevail here, large farming area so lots of cows and sheep to scoff first Grin

passionberry · 03/11/2010 19:41

I live near a natural spring which is handy.

I would love to have a fully stocked survival cupboard - yes we need a definitive mumsnet list!

MaDuggar · 03/11/2010 19:43

So far, we need ..

geiger counters

giraffe knives

a gun

Have started a thread Grin

MaDuggar · 03/11/2010 19:43

Do you have a tin opener in your oh-fuck-ruck-sack?

OP posts:
howdidthishappenthen · 03/11/2010 19:45

Yup - there's one on the leatherman thingy. Also a bottle-opener (I checked - best to be sure..)

phipps · 03/11/2010 19:47

My cat would starve first Sad.

MaDuggar · 03/11/2010 19:50

Eat the cat :)

SarahStrattonsSparkler · 03/11/2010 19:51

I'm not sure I could eat the dogs, I definitely couldn't eat my horse, I'd have to set him free and hope :(

CrispyTheCrisp · 03/11/2010 19:53

About a month i reckon

CoinOperatedGirl · 03/11/2010 19:56

I thought it the "tipping point" was supposed to be the collapse of the dollar, or something however small that leads to WW3. Won't be holding my breath, but in the event, we would survive about 2 days .

I like abovetopsecret, there's fresh doom every day Grin.

redrobin · 03/11/2010 19:58

first thing to do in the event of an Event is fill the bath, that should stave off thirst for a while, once the water is off. (first rule of zombie planning, after hacking down teh staircase)

MaDuggar · 03/11/2010 19:58

CoinOperated - my favourite thread over there right now is the "my dead uncle is emailing me from the monon" Grin

The tipping point cant predict what just that there will be or some such. They are saying dollar collapse, some are saying earthquake/eruption and soem say aliens lol!

With 7 people in the house and no water supply we could probably last about a week to 10 days. But I know how to make solar stills so I am ok. Everyone else can die then I can raid their houses.....

MarineIguana · 03/11/2010 19:59

When the first swine flu pandemic threatened, DP's work recommended stockpiling food and sent lists of instructions! So we did, plus loads of antibac hand gel and face masks.

I seem to remember it was all OK for 2 or 3 years (big bags of lentils, packet cheese sauce etc.) so I think we might have to start eating it soon anyway. So the apocalypse couldn't be more handily timed for us.

Anyway if it's something you can survive with a few tins of beans, it's not that huge, is it.

MaDuggar · 03/11/2010 20:05

What are solar stills?

OP posts:
BeenBeta · 03/11/2010 20:05

howdidthishappenthen - "Basic MN rules apply, even in the apocalypse."

I could imagine how MN would change though. The Ethical Living topic would go from cosy, gentle, lentil weavery to unbearable 'I told you so' smugness overnight. Grin

strandeadatsea · 03/11/2010 20:05

I should be at home in St Lucia but am stranded in Florida as it has been trashed by Hurricane Tomas and we can't get back. However had we been there we had a generator, hurricane (food) supplies, extra water, torches, batteries etc. Having been through a Cat 5 hurricane we're pretty well prepared.

BeenBeta · 03/11/2010 20:09

stranded - real experience of catastrophe survival definitley makes you MN guru.

SarahStrattonsSparkler · 03/11/2010 20:09

solar stills
