I run a LGBT Pride: AMA

Long time lurker but have NC for this.

I run an LGBT Pride event. I want to deal with some of the nonsense theories that we welcome pedophiles or have banned lesbians.

Ask me anything. (Disclaimer: I won't answer anything specific that might out me.)

@PencilsInSpace

'T is for Trash'
Trans Dick is Dick
Get the L Out
LGB not TQ

etc

If anyone ever carried a placard with 'T is for Trash' it would be all over social media everywhere and it would be brought up at every opportunity, so I find it hard to believe anyone ever has.

I've never seen 'Trans Dick is Dick' either and that's another one I would expect to be shared around. It's quite rude but as pp says, it's accurate.

I don't see anything offensive about 'Get the L Out' or 'LGB not TQ', I think they are reasonable statements of protest at the forced teaming which has been imposed on LGB, and especially the L. You said earlier Pride is a protest as well as a celebration, and it's not like lesbians can organise their own events in peace (if in doubt, rewatch the video I posted upthread) - so why shouldn't female homosexuals protest at Pride on the issues that are affecting them?

No examples of intimidation and violence from lesbians? Just four placards you didn't like? This 'both sides' thing is looking a bit thin.

Hermittrismegistus · 20/12/2023 21:54

I'm sorry but this whole welcoming of kinks and fetish, especially when you know children are likely near, just makes it look like gay people are perverts.

I have lots of family in countries with very harsh penalties for homosexuality and when they see the footage of pride events in the west it just confirms their fears about the community.

Pride in the west is doing a great deal of harm to LGB causes in many parts of the world.

Meadowgrasses · 20/12/2023 22:08

You say straight people are welcome as long as they realise the event isn’t for them and don’t take up a space meant for an LGBT person. I take it then that you feel the same about women’s safe spaces and opportunities and agree that no male (however they identify) should be taking women’s places in sports etc and should respect the fact that some things aren’t for them (women’s refuges, women’s prizes etc).

AvengedQuince · 20/12/2023 22:10

I agree it comes across as rude but I wonder if its in response to lesbians being told that there is a difference between penises depending on how their owners identify?

zurala · 20/12/2023 22:11

zurala · 20/12/2023 20:53

Would you call a man who likes women straight? Would you still call him that if he put a dress on?
If so, why are "lesbian" transwomen welcome at pride?
If not, what about the dress makes them not straight?

Op I think my question got a bit lost. Could you answer it please?

I think this is a really good point and would be (genuinely) interested in the OP's thoughts on this.

Hanlonsamazer · 20/12/2023 22:19

Yo, my question got lost. I like kissing women but I'm straight, I also wear men's trousers so I am trans. Is it OK if I wear an inflatable penis to your pride parade? Obvs will bring my friends.

Boomboom22 · 20/12/2023 22:20

How do you square pride being about not having to hide who you are and young girls just like you were now believing they must be trans? What about the fact hairstyles in kids and gender non conformity is no longer celebrated but taken as a signal you must need extreme medical treatment that would both sterilise you and make you a sexual as it were?

cerisepanther73 · 20/12/2023 22:21

@lgbtpride

Hi
How do you feel about the way certain tv series dramas portray LGBT people in general 🤔 then?

Do you feel nowadays that LGBT people are portrayed much better, then back in the day then?
If so why do you think that?

CherryJones1 · 20/12/2023 22:26

Ugh, I hate the whole 'ally' thing - you MUST 'stay in your lane' or 'not take up space from a trans person' or whatever - despite your explanation I still don't know what you mean.

Do you believe in Science OP? If so, why do you think that a man can become a woman?

LulooLemon · 20/12/2023 22:27

Genuine question, so please do not report:

OP, if trans women (males) are women and if trans men (females) are men, what do the words 'woman' and 'man' actually mean?

EmpressaurusOfCats · 20/12/2023 22:27

No examples of intimidation and violence from lesbians? Just four placards you didn't like? This 'both sides' thing is looking a bit thin.

It is rather.

I’ve been to lesbian events & feminist events where TRA protesters, often masked, have drowned out the speakers with music & megaphones, chalked obscene drawings on the pavement, thrown smoke bombs & physically threatened & attacked women, all for the heinous crime of believing sex takes priority over gender. You can’t seriously say that four placards are equal to all that?

Boomboom22 · 20/12/2023 22:30

It's because 'literal' violence of terfs believing facts is actually far worse than rape or death threats. Its because terfs are not allies of trans so they don't deserve to be protected in law or have human rights. Even if many terfs are lesbians.

lgbtpride · 20/12/2023 22:31

I've said already that I believe trans women are women and trans men are men. I'm here to answer questions about Pride, not to go down another pointless rabbit hole to suit people's arguments.

Oh I think we've moved a long way from the 70s/80s series of my childhood when gay men were all John Inman, and the 90s where we were all victims or dying. And I think it's because in Britain at least we are more accepted and more mainstream. But there is further to go.

@lgbtpride can you help me out with my question? Ta. Really insightful AMA.

Well yeah, at the protest against the Lesbian Strength event (video upthread) there was a prominent placard that said 'Some women have dicks, Get over it'.

I also spotted:

TERFS Fuck Off

Fuck TERFS

No TERFS No SWERFS

Tell the TERFS to fuck off

Trans men against TERFS

Fuck TERFS (again)

And in the middle of all these nasty signs was one of those 'progress' flags with 'Everyone is welcome here' written on it Confused It wasn't even their event!

lgbtpride · 20/12/2023 22:34

Meadowgrasses · 20/12/2023 22:08

I think that women's safe spaces should be protected and only open to women.

I have already stated that trans women are women, so I don't need to specify here that this includes trans women.

Boomboom22 · 20/12/2023 22:35

So no safe spaces at all ever then. How dare you say you support safe spaces then say twaw? With penises. How dare you? Are you child free?

Kernackered · 20/12/2023 22:36

lgbtpride · 20/12/2023 19:54

Generally I say to come and engage, have fun, dance (etc etc, depending on the event) but most important remember it's not your event. Give space to the LGBT+ community.

Go to a lecture or a seminar and learn something, and tell your friends afterwards. Honestly, the abuses people face around the world have really opened my (crying) eyes.

The absolute worst thing is hen parties gatecrashing carrying inflatable cocks. I know lots of Prides have the same issue.

Come, enjoy, but stay in your lane.

How do you know they're not lesbians with a kink for lesbian cocks? If they were, would they be welcome in your lane then?

LulooLemon · 20/12/2023 22:38

But my question IS about Pride because the Pride events are designed to attract and support LGBT people.

I would just like to know what the current definitions of man and woman are. It's surely a really simple question.

lgbtpride · 20/12/2023 22:42

@LulooLemon We don't have official definitions in our organisation. We welcome everyone, regardless of their gender.
