Stuck in Rhodes

I was just east of Gennadi, 5 minutes away, at Atlantica Dreams resort (Tui). All day yesterday there was a steady stream of evacuated guests from other hotels arriving.
The fire seemed to die down at around 3pm. But by 7 it was raging again.
We were told one of us needed to stay up all night to listen gif the evacuation siren.
There were hundreds of evacuees there by then.
Just before 10pm we were evacuated. We walked to the road where there was a coach and some cattle trucks. It was chaos and hard not to be separated from my DCs (23, 19, 17 & 17). We had no idea where we were going. I had to calm and keep company 2 distraught children (circa 14 and 8) who had got separated from their parents. I lost a shoe and one DC their phone. We had to jettison the one small cabin size suitcase we had brought our essentials in.
Our truck broke down and we walked about a mile, again not knowing where we were going, and were eventually directed onto Gennadi beach. There were around 2000 people there all crammed together. Small boats, capacity around 10, went back and forth between ferry boats and the shore. There was no Dunkirk spirit. People were tired, upset and frightened. Some had not slept for 2 nights.

It took 4 hours until we finally managed to get on one at around 2. It was bedlam with everyone shoving and barging. I was separated from the DCs several times. Nobody knew where we were going.

We were on the ferry around 4 hours before arriving in Rhodes Town at c6.30am. We sailed through ash clouds and people had towels tied round their faces. People were taken off in different buses. We ended up in a school with 150 others. But there was nothing there for us, no beds, mats, washing facilities or food and it was boiling hot.
There was no list so the authorities have no idea who has gone where. It is a total lie for Tui to say they have re accommodated everyone. They have not. They have no idea where I am and until their phone lines open I cannot contact them either. The only info we have been given is an FCO number for advice on travel and consular assistance (which we don't need).
Luckily I have 24 hour insurance access and when I'd re charged my phone was able to establish I am covered (was worried it would be an "act of God"). I have booked a hotel for 1 night, after a long search. I've just arrived - it's chaos with everyone sleeping on the floor.
Just before we left the school a band of volunteers arrived laden with food and one of them thinks our hotel may have been burned down and we are unlikely to get back to try to retrieve our stuff. She says Gennadi is mostly gone.

We leave on Wednesday. We can't check in here til 2 and need to go and buy clothes and essentials. All we have is what we are standing in.

Or stop taking planes all over the world for your “week in the sun” that you’ve “earn’t the right to”

I mean complaining about climate change ruining your holiday, without acknowledging that you going on said holiday is contributing to the aforementioned climate change..

OP I am glad you are safe, as hard as it is at least in a few days you will be back in your own home, with all your processions you had left at home.

There is more to it though.

Of course the tourists ruin the very same places they say they love, but it's also the local tourist industry that contributes to this.

The local authorities let their islands and towns get overdeveloped and so contributed to the whole mess we are seeing now.

What exactly about your post do you think it's helpful ffs?

Maybe people shpuld be accountable for their actions ffs?
It was widely known about the temperatures soaring, wildfires are getting more and more out of hand due to climate change.
Op has gone on holiday contributing to that very same climate change and is now posting moaning about how the evacuation hasn't gone like a planned royal event.

I imagine it is a total shit show though.
The Dunkirk spirit comment was eyebrow raising.

We're booked to go to Rhodes a week on Wednesday. Our group consists of 5 adults, an 8 year old and my 81 year old dad. It's all very well saying we shouldn't go, but unless Tui cancel the holiday we won't have any comeback. Insurance won't cover us as if we just decide not to go. I would assume Tui would cancel in these circumstances, but they are still flying people out so who knows? We can't afford to just lose the money, but also don't want to add to an awful situation and risk everyone's lives. So what are we meant to do?

I can’t believe they are still flying people out! I read in the news this morning that lots of flights have been cancelled and they are just concentrating on flying people home. Surely that’s the sensible thing to do.

Willmafrockfit · 23/07/2023 11:26

the travel companies want to make money

doistayordoigo · 23/07/2023 11:32

I don't think people should be expected to write-it off to be honest, I think Tui should be offering alternatives, rescheduling etc, but we were due to be staying nearer to Rhodes Town so I imagine they will be saying the area is unaffected, although it clearly is if that's where people are being evacuated to.

Pretty sure the doctor's wouldn't give a sick note for stress!!

pompomdaisy · 23/07/2023 11:32

I'm sorry but I would not go to Rhodes now. Switch the holiday fgs. Don't let your 81 year old set foot in that situation! It's just not worth it!

PrincessofWellies · 23/07/2023 11:35

Perhaps I should start a thread 'Is the Earth doomed?' Some of the attitudes on here, yes we do make a difference if we take 5 minute showers not 20, buy non packaged goods, don't buy from Shein, Temu, Chinese crap and don't waste resources. It has to start somewhere . . .

Gruffaflo · 23/07/2023 11:36

Personally I wouldn't go even if it meant losing money (we are cash strapped so not devaluing how horrible it is to lose such amounts or that its a decision taken lightly). Its one thing being caught up in something that you took a risk on but didn't see it being this bad, it's another to willingly go and put yourself and family at risk of at best just a shit and stressful holiday, and at worst something bad happens. Especially a youngish child and an elderly parent, hospitals are overrun in some areas already and I don't see how this will necessarily be resolved quickly.

doistayordoigo · 23/07/2023 11:49

@Gruffaflo I do agree, I guess I'm just waiting to see whether we hear from Tui in the next week, as we aren't meant to go for another 10 days. I'm seen as the anxious one in the family, so may have to fight my case with the others...Tui making the decision for us would be much easier!

Definitely, sadly I don't think they will unless forced into it as they want the money don't they. I hope everyone who has holidays booked manages to get it sorted, things will hopefully be better in 10 days.

Inastatus · 23/07/2023 11:54

Bloody hell, the OP is stuck in a desperate emergency situation and some posters still feel the need to put the boot in, blaming her for daring to go on holiday and lecturing her about climate change! I hope it makes you feel better knowing that you are making her feel even worse!

ticketstickets · 23/07/2023 12:00

The OP says this is her first holiday like this in 8 years, I don't think she is responsible for climate change. I know people who fly off on holiday many times a year.

BIg beleiver that if we all flew less, drove less, ate less meat etc than that would have a larger impact on climate change than a few people not flying at all, not driving and being vegan etc.

OP, I hope you are all ok, it sounds awful.

This is AMA. An indication that Op is willing to engage with questions. It's already accepted that it's a difficult probably scary situation.

Sweetashunni · 23/07/2023 12:05

Glad you’re safe. That’s the main thing.

However to point out the obvious, holidaymakers are part of the reason there are wildfires - I can’t begin to imagine the impact of the enormous carbon footprint they’ve had this last 40 years.

Can I ask will you be travelling again now you’ve seen first hand the effect of leisurely air travel? Did it shock you in this way?

Lives or money? That should be easy shouldn’t it?

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 23/07/2023 12:07

The travel companies want to make money

So too presumably do the local hotel owners, bar staff, kitchen staff, housekeeping staff, cafe owners, taxi drivers, etc etc, most of whom probably hope to make a large part of their year's income in the summer sason. What happens to them if the visitors just don't turn up?

Yes it might not be a good idea to go to Rhodes at the moment, but it's not as simple as saying it doesn't matter, it's only the tour companies wanting to make money (which they use to pay the wages of their employees).

I personally wouldn't put my family at risk for the sake of people's businesses, sorry if that makes me selfish.

GiddyGladys · 23/07/2023 12:12

TUI aren't still flying people out. They've cancelled all flight up until the 25th July so far

Inc0gn1to · 23/07/2023 12:12

Hi OP. I appreciated you sharing your evocative and honest descriptions of the evacuation. I did not interpret 'no Dunkirk spirit' like some sort of one star trip advisor review (as others have). I'm pleased to hear you are safe and so sorry that your first holiday abroad in 8 years has ended like this. I hope things are manageable until you get home.

Air travel contributes only 2-3% of carbon emissions. I'd love to know how many of the vitriolic eco warriors on this thread have more than one child or own and drive a car.

My questions: how are things now? Have you heard any more of the resort you left or other places affected by the fires?

TheModHatter · 23/07/2023 12:12

OP, is anyone saying anything about the passport situation? For people who had to leave theirs?

Do you have your car keys and hour keys with you?

I hope you are on your way home v soon.
