Stuck in Rhodes

I was just east of Gennadi, 5 minutes away, at Atlantica Dreams resort (Tui). All day yesterday there was a steady stream of evacuated guests from other hotels arriving.
The fire seemed to die down at around 3pm. But by 7 it was raging again.
We were told one of us needed to stay up all night to listen gif the evacuation siren.
There were hundreds of evacuees there by then.
Just before 10pm we were evacuated. We walked to the road where there was a coach and some cattle trucks. It was chaos and hard not to be separated from my DCs (23, 19, 17 & 17). We had no idea where we were going. I had to calm and keep company 2 distraught children (circa 14 and 8) who had got separated from their parents. I lost a shoe and one DC their phone. We had to jettison the one small cabin size suitcase we had brought our essentials in.
Our truck broke down and we walked about a mile, again not knowing where we were going, and were eventually directed onto Gennadi beach. There were around 2000 people there all crammed together. Small boats, capacity around 10, went back and forth between ferry boats and the shore. There was no Dunkirk spirit. People were tired, upset and frightened. Some had not slept for 2 nights.

It took 4 hours until we finally managed to get on one at around 2. It was bedlam with everyone shoving and barging. I was separated from the DCs several times. Nobody knew where we were going.

We were on the ferry around 4 hours before arriving in Rhodes Town at c6.30am. We sailed through ash clouds and people had towels tied round their faces. People were taken off in different buses. We ended up in a school with 150 others. But there was nothing there for us, no beds, mats, washing facilities or food and it was boiling hot.
There was no list so the authorities have no idea who has gone where. It is a total lie for Tui to say they have re accommodated everyone. They have not. They have no idea where I am and until their phone lines open I cannot contact them either. The only info we have been given is an FCO number for advice on travel and consular assistance (which we don't need).
Luckily I have 24 hour insurance access and when I'd re charged my phone was able to establish I am covered (was worried it would be an "act of God"). I have booked a hotel for 1 night, after a long search. I've just arrived - it's chaos with everyone sleeping on the floor.
Just before we left the school a band of volunteers arrived laden with food and one of them thinks our hotel may have been burned down and we are unlikely to get back to try to retrieve our stuff. She says Gennadi is mostly gone.

We leave on Wednesday. We can't check in here til 2 and need to go and buy clothes and essentials. All we have is what we are standing in.

When did you fly out? Were you not concerned by the numerous reports in the media about the adverse weather, and although the fires weren't until Wednesday did you not consider cancelling or moving it? What are you expecting people to do?

What exactly about your post do you think it's helpful ffs?

Pleased you are at least all safe OP. Sounds like you've held it together well at a very frightening time. Wishing you good luck for getting home ❤️

SweetSakura · 23/07/2023 09:47

Do you think people should have been evacuated sooner op?

And do you think having witnessed the dangers of climate change up close that people will change their behaviours once home and safe?

Thisweeksname · 23/07/2023 09:53

So sorry OP, I love Rhodes and I was heartbroken watching the videos of the fires and evacuation. It’s a lovely island and such a shame for everyone involved. I hope you get sorted soon and I’m sorry about your holiday, its an awful situation.

Willmafrockfit · 23/07/2023 09:57

holiday makers are still arriving!

notforonesecond · 23/07/2023 09:59

We went to that hotel last year. A really beautiful place with so many amazing members of staff. It’s heartbreaking to think they might have lost their livelihoods and homes.

Your experience sounds scary and stressful but try to be grateful that you will be home eventually and that you’re currently safe. Well done for staying as calm as you could. The whole thing is just awful.

Pinkitydrinkity · 23/07/2023 10:05

It sounds scary, glad your insurance paid out!

I went to Crete recently with my parents, my mum (age 59) had cancer last year. It sounds so silly but I just keep thinking if this had happened to us there’s no way she would have been able to walk for miles/be waiting around on her feet for hours/days. Also still had to take medicine every day, what if she had left it in the room and wasn’t able to take it for a few days.

PrincessofWellies · 23/07/2023 10:06

Don't you think the entire western world needs a wake up call about climate change?

How many people on here do you think have changed their lives to live sustainably?

How many still use tumble dryers, wash clothes after one wear have 20 minute showers, have an excessive amount of clothes, buy goods in single use plastic?

None of that is going to stop climate change while massive corporations exist 🤣
Seriously you think us having a 4 minute shower will lessen the damage china alone is doing?

Willmafrockfit · 23/07/2023 10:13

we should all do our bit!

That's a really defeatist attitude. Corporations only exist because of consumers

I'm just curious about people who see the news, decide to still go on holiday when there's a heightened risk of something happening that's all. I don't see why an AMA has to involve just helpful questions does it? And I don't know anyone in real life to ask who would do this.

WhatCameFirstTheChickenOrTheDickhead · 23/07/2023 10:16

@Lefteyetwitch why do you think chinas emissions are so high? Because we all buy all our stuff from there...

gogomoto · 23/07/2023 10:17

I've a friend who works for tui and they have been up for 48 hours here trying to arrange flights, hotels etc. The issue she said they have is there's only a set number of permanent reps on Rhodes (this is the normal thing, works usually) and only so many coaches (local drivers) so they are reliant on local staff, contracted coaches etc because it's such a large number of people. Also having issues getting reliable information from the local authorities apparently. They were trying to contract extra planes - it's peak season remember. As to taking luggage, if you are limited on space you take the people not the clothes as tough as it is for you, clothes can be bought, lives are at risk

And? They're not going to stop. You call it defeatist I can realistic.
Remember the Oz wildfires? Heartbreaking images of wildlife dying agonising deaths?

Since then we've had Shein and Temu appear and fuck all else done.

And? That's literally my point. You're not making some clever "got you" here.

It's here and it's never going away. It's just laughable when people try the whole 'the world is boring because people are having showers'

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 23/07/2023 10:20

Have you got your passports?

And because they have a population of almost 1.5 billion.

On the other hand, they are in a better position to plan ahead than Western democracies.

It sounds awful but I do wonder what people expect holiday companies to do. They can’t really tell emergency services what to do and the people they have on the ground are usually very young who will have no idea what to do.

This
I used to be a holiday rep, things out of our control happen. They can't just magic accommodation up out of nowhere. Thus really is an act of god. Nobody expected fires

I'm glad everybody got safely out, I can already picture the mayhem in Tui and other operators offices trying to support everyone, get people on flights

Or stop taking planes all over the world for your “week in the sun” that you’ve “earn’t the right to”

I mean complaining about climate change ruining your holiday, without acknowledging that you going on said holiday is contributing to the aforementioned climate change..

OP I am glad you are safe, as hard as it is at least in a few days you will be back in your own home, with all your processions you had left at home.

It came across as insensitive to me, as in the horse has already bolted. But I've not slept so am possibly projecting, my bad.. Sorry.

I said on one of the threads I would cancel and it wasn't worth going, some commented that was stupid but I'm not so sure.
