Stuck in Rhodes

I was just east of Gennadi, 5 minutes away, at Atlantica Dreams resort (Tui). All day yesterday there was a steady stream of evacuated guests from other hotels arriving.
The fire seemed to die down at around 3pm. But by 7 it was raging again.
We were told one of us needed to stay up all night to listen gif the evacuation siren.
There were hundreds of evacuees there by then.
Just before 10pm we were evacuated. We walked to the road where there was a coach and some cattle trucks. It was chaos and hard not to be separated from my DCs (23, 19, 17 & 17). We had no idea where we were going. I had to calm and keep company 2 distraught children (circa 14 and 8) who had got separated from their parents. I lost a shoe and one DC their phone. We had to jettison the one small cabin size suitcase we had brought our essentials in.
Our truck broke down and we walked about a mile, again not knowing where we were going, and were eventually directed onto Gennadi beach. There were around 2000 people there all crammed together. Small boats, capacity around 10, went back and forth between ferry boats and the shore. There was no Dunkirk spirit. People were tired, upset and frightened. Some had not slept for 2 nights.

It took 4 hours until we finally managed to get on one at around 2. It was bedlam with everyone shoving and barging. I was separated from the DCs several times. Nobody knew where we were going.

We were on the ferry around 4 hours before arriving in Rhodes Town at c6.30am. We sailed through ash clouds and people had towels tied round their faces. People were taken off in different buses. We ended up in a school with 150 others. But there was nothing there for us, no beds, mats, washing facilities or food and it was boiling hot.
There was no list so the authorities have no idea who has gone where. It is a total lie for Tui to say they have re accommodated everyone. They have not. They have no idea where I am and until their phone lines open I cannot contact them either. The only info we have been given is an FCO number for advice on travel and consular assistance (which we don't need).
Luckily I have 24 hour insurance access and when I'd re charged my phone was able to establish I am covered (was worried it would be an "act of God"). I have booked a hotel for 1 night, after a long search. I've just arrived - it's chaos with everyone sleeping on the floor.
Just before we left the school a band of volunteers arrived laden with food and one of them thinks our hotel may have been burned down and we are unlikely to get back to try to retrieve our stuff. She says Gennadi is mostly gone.

We leave on Wednesday. We can't check in here til 2 and need to go and buy clothes and essentials. All we have is what we are standing in.

Do you think people should have been evacuated sooner op?

And do you think having witnessed the dangers of climate change up close that people will change their behaviours once home and safe?

I'm not sure. At 3pm it did look like it was all under control. But it was so windy, so maybe it would have been better to do it in daylight hours a bit earlier.

It sounds scary, glad your insurance paid out!

I went to Crete recently with my parents, my mum (age 59) had cancer last year. It sounds so silly but I just keep thinking if this had happened to us there’s no way she would have been able to walk for miles/be waiting around on her feet for hours/days. Also still had to take medicine every day, what if she had left it in the room and wasn’t able to take it for a few days.

Red Cross was quite good at prioritising and helping the infirm I was told

We're booked to go to Rhodes a week on Wednesday. Our group consists of 5 adults, an 8 year old and my 81 year old dad. It's all very well saying we shouldn't go, but unless Tui cancel the holiday we won't have any comeback. Insurance won't cover us as if we just decide not to go. I would assume Tui would cancel in these circumstances, but they are still flying people out so who knows? We can't afford to just lose the money, but also don't want to add to an awful situation and risk everyone's lives. So what are we meant to do?

If the forecast is as bad I personally wouldnt want to go as an 81 year old and i would worry taking am 8 year old. And usually I'm not overly cautious.

I've a friend who works for tui and they have been up for 48 hours here trying to arrange flights, hotels etc. The issue she said they have is there's only a set number of permanent reps on Rhodes (this is the normal thing, works usually) and only so many coaches (local drivers) so they are reliant on local staff, contracted coaches etc because it's such a large number of people. Also having issues getting reliable information from the local authorities apparently. They were trying to contract extra planes - it's peak season remember. As to taking luggage, if you are limited on space you take the people not the clothes as tough as it is for you, clothes can be bought, lives are at risk

100% re the luggage. I had one small cabin bag size case. Jettisoned it without hesitation. But others on the beach had all their luggage and added greatly to the chaos and delays.

Have you got your passports?

Yes

OP posts:
TooTrusting · 23/07/2023 13:03

@hungrycaterpillar
I am not moaning. I am giving an honest account. The fire should be prioritised but I think we could have been told where we were going when we got told to go. That would have taken no extra effort. And Tui have a huge job to do but they shouldn't be telling the press it's all sorted

Juat a tip, have a copy of your passport page on your phone.

Hi OP. I appreciated you sharing your evocative and honest descriptions of the evacuation. I did not interpret 'no Dunkirk spirit' like some sort of one star trip advisor review (as others have). I'm pleased to hear you are safe and so sorry that your first holiday abroad in 8 years has ended like this. I hope things are manageable until you get home.

Air travel contributes only 2-3% of carbon emissions. I'd love to know how many of the vitriolic eco warriors on this thread have more than one child or own and drive a car.

My questions: how are things now? Have you heard any more of the resort you left or other places affected by the fires?

There's little info. Someone has sent me a Twitter screenshot which indicates guests are returning to my resort. But I've heard nothing. Not complaining, I realise Tui needs to work their way through everyone.

OP, is anyone saying anything about the passport situation? For people who had to leave theirs?

Do you have your car keys and hour keys with you?

I hope you are on your way home v soon.

Had a panic when I read this. Then remembered I left them with the place I parked my car. Phew!

A good tip but I would imagine some people had to leave without their mobiles . When our hotel caught fire on holiday years ago , no one could go up to their rooms until the all clear was given . In this case it was get out quick . If they get to the airport they should be able to get a temporary passport. I would imagine British embassy are there ready to deal with emergency passports

There's a FCO number to call if you are without a passport We e all had it by text.
My exH is also sending me any info he finds.

People were struggling with carrying/shoulder lifts etc and many children were terrified and distressed by all the pushing and shoving

I can imagine, poor dc

Really interesting thread

It must have been terrifying sounds like an apocalypse movie.

TooTrusting · 23/07/2023 13:15

No Dunkirk spirit a bit unfair perhaps. The locals were fantastic coming to the rescue. And I didn't mean to trivialise the real Dunkirk.

The money is already gone. What you'll lose is a holiday to a disaster zone. Do you want a holiday in a disaster zone? Or would you be better off at home? Surely, the answer is obvious!

nosepierce · 23/07/2023 13:19

TooTrusting sorry if i've missed this but where were you when you were told to evacuate?
what were the conditions - wind/proximity of fire?
What belongings were you able to take?

Sorry to everyone involved and the locals.

Movinghouseatlast · 23/07/2023 13:19

Wild fires are common in Rhodes in the summer. I was there a month ago and there were fires then- normally they are easily contained.

Spybot · 23/07/2023 13:21

Sorry for your experience OP. It is very upsetting. Glad you are in safe now. You will get home eventually. Thanks for comforting the lost kids.

Drenchend · 23/07/2023 13:22

@gogomoto.
But why were tui flying more poor families ilies into this horror

LittleApartmentOnThePrairie · 23/07/2023 13:25

OP I’m so sorry you are experiencing this and so glad you were there for those poor children.

Your description made me think of the experiences of all of those across the world that have had similar experiences due to climate breakdown. The families in the Pakistan floods last year, the families in Australia and Canada fleeing wildfires. Just three of many examples. These experiences will get more common. If we keep going as we are this will be everyday news. UK too.

I hope this makes us all a little more aware of what we are doing and how mindless it is. I hope you make it home safe and sound.

Drenchend · 23/07/2023 13:29

Nearly every year fires break out especially on the Greek Island.

So what I would expect is fhe holiday companies to have a fire protocol in place and emergency infrastructure to go.

With staff trained on it.

Excellent emergency comms in place.
I'm amazed there are no reports off deaths. No way would my elderly in firm dad have been able to run at a moment's notice.

Theproofofthepudding · 23/07/2023 13:34

To the person losing their holiday potentially, think about the spending money you'll save by not going! Seriously though by a week on Wednesday things will be clearer. The fire hopefully will be out for a start and if things escalate you may get a refund too

Daisyhillsareblooming · 23/07/2023 13:34

How frightening , hope you get home safely ! Poor people of Rhodes and all the wild life also destroyed . So sad !
