Stuck in Rhodes

I was just east of Gennadi, 5 minutes away, at Atlantica Dreams resort (Tui). All day yesterday there was a steady stream of evacuated guests from other hotels arriving.
The fire seemed to die down at around 3pm. But by 7 it was raging again.
We were told one of us needed to stay up all night to listen gif the evacuation siren.
There were hundreds of evacuees there by then.
Just before 10pm we were evacuated. We walked to the road where there was a coach and some cattle trucks. It was chaos and hard not to be separated from my DCs (23, 19, 17 & 17). We had no idea where we were going. I had to calm and keep company 2 distraught children (circa 14 and 8) who had got separated from their parents. I lost a shoe and one DC their phone. We had to jettison the one small cabin size suitcase we had brought our essentials in.
Our truck broke down and we walked about a mile, again not knowing where we were going, and were eventually directed onto Gennadi beach. There were around 2000 people there all crammed together. Small boats, capacity around 10, went back and forth between ferry boats and the shore. There was no Dunkirk spirit. People were tired, upset and frightened. Some had not slept for 2 nights.

It took 4 hours until we finally managed to get on one at around 2. It was bedlam with everyone shoving and barging. I was separated from the DCs several times. Nobody knew where we were going.

We were on the ferry around 4 hours before arriving in Rhodes Town at c6.30am. We sailed through ash clouds and people had towels tied round their faces. People were taken off in different buses. We ended up in a school with 150 others. But there was nothing there for us, no beds, mats, washing facilities or food and it was boiling hot.
There was no list so the authorities have no idea who has gone where. It is a total lie for Tui to say they have re accommodated everyone. They have not. They have no idea where I am and until their phone lines open I cannot contact them either. The only info we have been given is an FCO number for advice on travel and consular assistance (which we don't need).
Luckily I have 24 hour insurance access and when I'd re charged my phone was able to establish I am covered (was worried it would be an "act of God"). I have booked a hotel for 1 night, after a long search. I've just arrived - it's chaos with everyone sleeping on the floor.
Just before we left the school a band of volunteers arrived laden with food and one of them thinks our hotel may have been burned down and we are unlikely to get back to try to retrieve our stuff. She says Gennadi is mostly gone.

We leave on Wednesday. We can't check in here til 2 and need to go and buy clothes and essentials. All we have is what we are standing in.

So sorry this has happened to you and to many others OP. Worst of all for those who have lost their homes and jobs of course.

Hope all kids are with their families and I hope you get home soon.

  • Travel companies Tui and Jet2 have suspended inbound tourist flights to Rhodes, and EasyJet has cancelled package holidays, but is maintaining its flights

suspended until wednesday

OP, is anyone saying anything about the passport situation? For people who had to leave theirs?

Do you have your car keys and hour keys with you?

I hope you are on your way home v soon.

They've set up a station at the airport for those with no passports to still be able to fly home.

WeightInLine · 23/07/2023 08:55

You sound calm and organised.

What happened to the 14/8yo?

Found their mum. Their dad made his way to the beach at Gennadi separately. They decided to chance it and stay. They made their way to a Tui hotel further west but they won't let them in as they werent originally Tui guests.

We're booked to go to Rhodes a week on Wednesday. Our group consists of 5 adults, an 8 year old and my 81 year old dad. It's all very well saying we shouldn't go, but unless Tui cancel the holiday we won't have any comeback. Insurance won't cover us as if we just decide not to go. I would assume Tui would cancel in these circumstances, but they are still flying people out so who knows? We can't afford to just lose the money, but also don't want to add to an awful situation and risk everyone's lives. So what are we meant to do?

You won't "lose the money" any more or less if you don't go. You just won't get the holiday.

TooTrusting · 23/07/2023 12:34

Nw22 · 23/07/2023 08:56

It sounds awful but I do wonder what people expect holiday companies to do. They can’t really tell emergency services what to do and the people they have on the ground are usually very young who will have no idea what to do.

Agree that putting out the fires has to be the priority. But we were just told to leave and nothing at all about where we were going or what the plan was

OP posts:
Nw22 · 23/07/2023 12:36

its an emergency situation. Evacuating is most important. I don’t know what you expect holiday reps to do at that short notice.

TooTrusting · 23/07/2023 12:36

pompomdaisy · 23/07/2023 09:02

This is no longer a holiday issue. You are an evacuee. I mean it's not like they can get you another hotel. It becomes every man for himself in these times. I was stuck in Morocco when they shut the airspace. We were hoofed out of the hotels and relied on the British Embassy updates from that point.

I'm just a bit irritated that Tui is quoted widely as saying they have re-accommodated us when they haven't.

I thought your “no
Dunkirk spirt” description was pretty helpful, when trying to imagine the atmosphere there and how people were feeling an behaving towards one another.

I hope you get some information soon.

Easyontheeyes · 23/07/2023 09:05

Are you safe where you are until Wednesday?

I have a room for tonight. Then no idea what I'm doing. People are just sleeping on the floor all over the place.

It's sounds scary and it's a shame it ruined your holiday

Rhodes is A small island suffering from client change it doesn't have the infrastructure for a situation like this. The locals will be doing there best.

Maybe Finally the govts of this world might do something because if they don't no one will be holidaying in southern Europe in ten years.

I hope you get home soon.

The locals are being incredible

When people say the ‘government should be doing something’ about climate change. What? Banning people from going on holiday? Would they be re-elected if they did this? Ffs everyone seems to be forgetting that the reason our world is now on fire is because we have demanded cheap, luxurious and easy lifestyles. We are all to blame - every single one of us. The government merely catered to what we wanted, because if they didn’t we would just get somebody else in that did.

There should have been a plan in place where the travel companies had trained staff about what to say, and how information would be communicated, in the event of a situation like this.

It hasn’t come totally out of the blue for them, there have been serious fires on the island in the past during the summer, when areas had to be evacuated.

RhodesHereWeGo · 23/07/2023 12:40

I am so sorry op. I might have missed this but where exactly are you now?

I doubt there was a proper plan in place as there wasn’t much notice to evacuate, fires are pretty unpredictable. Of course you were just told to leave, what else were they supposed to do?

HarrietSchulenberg · 23/07/2023 12:42

DS1 is on Rhodes at the moment but in the north, not near the fires. He says his hotel has lots of people sleeping in corridors, the lobby, the bars and restaurants. I'm quite worried about how he's going to get home on Tuesday but am very thankful he hasn't had to be evacuated or worse.

neamstripes · 23/07/2023 12:44

Does anyone know of anyone at Neilson Levante at the moment? We've booked a week this week, any info very grateful. Thanks.

Toobusytoocare · 23/07/2023 12:45

Hi OP I really hope everything is settling down accommodation wise .Am so sorry for everyone involved and thankful that my son got home last night! The situation must have ramped up very quickly yesterday because he was oblivious to the problem until he got to the airport last night He was stay in the NW of the island. Hope you and eve get home soon and feel desperate for the locals loosing so much X

When did you fly out? Were you not concerned by the numerous reports in the media about the adverse weather, and although the fires weren't until Wednesday did you not consider cancelling or moving it? What are you expecting people to do?

No. The locals say there are fires every year. It was the unusually high winds on Friday that turned this one into something much worse. Seasonal fires are not unusual. I've been in Croatia when there were fires there. Usually they are contained.

I'm expecting to prioritise containing the fire. But they must have known where we were being sent when they told us to leave, so I think they could have told us. People would have been calmer if they knew the plan rather than just being sent into the night.

Sounds very stressful. How did people with young dc fare with the walking?

I guess you can carry very young and with a five year old to a mix of them walking and carry

People were struggling with carrying/shoulder lifts etc and many children were terrified and distressed by all the pushing and shoving

While it's a horrible situation for you all. However You couldn't really expect beds to magically appear for people escaping. You have shelter that's about all they could do at that moment. And lay on buses to evacuate.

I agree. But Tui is reporting to the press that they have re-accommodated everyone. They shouldn't be blatantly lying.
