@00100001

"I wouldn't want to cause men to sin from lustful thoughts etc. "

Do you not think that is one step away form victim blaming? "If she wasn't wearing a short skirt, she wouldn't have been reaped, she was clearly asking for it"

Are you raising your daughter to consider the thoughts, feelings and actions of men above and before her own?

Thoughts and actions are very different. I'd like to do more reading on this though as im not an expert!

I'm raising her to consider the thoughts and feelings of everyone, as well as her own, and help her to realise how her actions have potential consequences, good or bad. so that includes men yes!

“Thoughts and actions are very different. “

That’s an odd thing to say given the religion you’ve chosen

SquirtleSquad · 15/03/2021 22:13

The bible loves a bit of rape victim blaming

Hear and give ear; do not be haughty, for the Lord has spoken. . . . And if you say in your heart, 'Why have these things come upon me?' it is for the greatness of your iniquity that your skirts are lifted up, and you are violated . . . because you have forgotten me and trusted in lies. I myself will lift up your skirts over your face, and your shame will be seen." (Jeremiah 13:15–26 NRSV)

Myneighboursdomyheadin · 15/03/2021 22:15

:(
It’s not for me then.

@TitusPullo

To me this thread shows evangelical Christianity to a tee. A veneer of #bekind and faithful and Jesus will save you, covering over layer after layer of judgement, sin, homophobia, sexism. Be nice but don’t be gay, dress modestly otherwise your rapist can’t be held accountable for their actions, believe or you are going to hell. ‘‘Twas ever thus.
Those are some strong words that I would disagree with. We are not to judge (plenty do, christian or not, but that's something I really strive to not do), and we are called to love everyone. I was welcomed into my church, but I would never expect my decision to be a single parent supported by the church.

"Moreover the Lord saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet: Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will discover their secret parts." (Isaiah 3:16–17 KJV)"

Of course the more modern international versions replace the lifting of skirts and violation, exposing of secret parts with things like make scalps and heels bare.

What actions do you think your daughter would be 'guilty' of that would have negative consequences from men? And who would be to blame for those consequences?

00100001 · 15/03/2021 22:20

" But we are inherently selfish beings, and at times, having god in the back of your mind can be helpful to rain-check your actions"

so, you're still saying that the fear of being sent to Hell should be a motivation for your daughter to kind and thoughtful?

Just trying to have a clear view of your thoughts.

Well every action has a consequence, and many actions affect others, so anything really!

Will you teach your daughter that when she has her period anyone who touches her, or anything she sits on or uses is seen as unclean in the eyes of the lord? That she shall suffer menstrual impurity for 7 days?

QuitMoaning · 15/03/2021 22:22

The bible teaches that all sinners will go to hell.

The church deems us all sinners without knowing us. No matter how ‘good’ you live your life, the church will say you are a sinner.

So what is the point in trying to live sin free?
When I went to church to see if it was for me, this was what struck me, I spent an hour on a few Sunday mornings being told I was a sinner. That wore me down and I gave up.
And when my ex husband had an affair and abandoned me, my local vicar told me that he would not perform any marriage ceremony for me in the future as I had sinned by getting divorced. I was the innocent party yet the church chose to punish me.

toocold54 · 15/03/2021 22:23

Do you believe in Jesus?
And if you do why did you choose to become Christian and not Jewish?
It’s something I’ve always wondered.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/03/2021 22:24

How does it make you feel when you hear of children dying from cancer? Does that make you hate your God?

Yes we are so blessed that though we are sinners, we can be saved! To me it feels like when I gave my heart to God, I don't desire to sin, whereas before I didn't really think about it/actively wanted to do things which were sinful. Will be sure to read up more on this though!

Also would you be happy if your daughter didn’t believe the same things as you and wanted to follow a different or no religion?

No it doesn't. It doesn't mean my heart doesn't completely ache for those affected by it.

"Well every action has a consequence, and many actions affect others, so anything really!"

You're not really answering the question....

from your previous replies about causing men lust - you seem to be placing the blame on the woman for causing the man's "inproper" thoughts.

Are you suggesting that, if your daughter was 13, wearing short shorts and a crop top, and had messed aorund with a bit of makeup and walked into town with her friends, and a man indecently exposed himself, because he was aroused by what he saw. It would be your daughter's fault... because her actions had consequences?

00100001 · 15/03/2021 22:28

You say you don't take the Bible literally. So why do you think same se marriage shouldn't be allowed?

midwifeinthemaking · 15/03/2021 22:28

@toocold54

I'm not going to judge her decisions, I will always love her. I will bring her up with the bible as her spiritual guide but if she chooses to walk away, I will still love her!

Jews don't believe that Jesus is the son of God... why would someone who believes in Jesus become Jewish? Confused
chinateapot · 15/03/2021 22:30

So my daughter got cancer age 5. We’ve been lucky, she did well. But it was a world of pain for a child I consider innocent. I really struggle with the concept of prayer helping people recover. If a child dies from cancer does that mean people didn’t pray hard enough?

I guess what I’m asking is how do you square a benevolent god with children suffering like that? (including very young babies who surely haven’t sinned?? I suppose unless you go with original sin)

I appreciate the thoughts of those friends who are religious and have prayed for my daughter as I know it’s their expression of love and concern. But I don’t understand how they think it’s going to help and how it fits into a Christian belief system.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/03/2021 22:31

How can you not hate your God for what children go through on this planet? Only a sick bastard would purposefully create a world and then let this play out.
