Best travel mugs

You've all seen the Blue Planet footage and Greta Thunberg speeches (if not, where have you been?). Single-use coffee cups are contributing to climate change by clogging up landfills and oceans.

Just because your favourite coffee shop's cups are bad for the environment, doesn't mean you should be deprived of your morning caffeine. While some can leak, fail to keep your drink hot or even keep it too hot, the best travel mugs are easy to drink from, big enough for your favourite drink and able to keep it at the perfect temperature for long enough.

Mumsnet users like to keep warm while they're out and about, so there's a wealth of expertise on the forums around products such as the best heated gilet and the best winter coat.

Whether you’re looking for the best leakproof travel mug, the best-insulated travel mug or simply a travel mug on a budget, we’ve scoured the Mumsnet forums and other expert review sites for the best travel mugs on the market now, in various materials, styles and sizes.

Our verdict

When asked for travel mug recommendations, Contigo is a brand name mentioned time and time again by Mumsnet users, praised for their durable, leakproof designs that can keep your hot drink warm for hours.

Using a simple push button to drink, the smart autoseal technology on the Contigo West Loop Autoseal seals the lid between sips, while the protective lock button helps avoid any accidents during your commute. Mumsnet users have confidently thrown this travel mug into their bag without experiencing spills - ideal for peace of mind when you’re rushing around in the morning.

With high-performance double walled insulation, the Cotingo Autoseal can keep drinks hot for up to five hours (or cold drinks cool for up to 12). While some reviewers did notice colour chipping off the exterior after extended use, we love the affordable price tag and how easy it is to clean, with the dishwasher-safe lid opening up completely to ensure no bacteria gets left behind.

Our verdict

If you’re seeking a travel mug for occasional use or are simply working with a more limited budget, this Kisuomaoyi comes with a really affordable price tag of less than £10.

While at 250ml, the capacity is relatively small, it’s plenty for transporting a comforting coffee to enjoy on your way to work, with the ability to keep your drink warm for four to six hours if your day proves too busy to enjoy it straight away.

Using a silicone-sealed, leakproof sipper, you can easily enjoy your drink without removing the lid, however, some reviewers found it incredibly tricky to detach the lid for cleaning. Once removed, we love this travel mug’s easy-to-clean stainless steel, with a large internal diameter that makes cleaning by hand an absolute breeze.

I have a Camelbak travel mug. It keeps tea hot for three hours. Sometimes too hot. I leave the lid off a bit to get it to drinkable temperature and then let it stay there otherwise it takes three hours to sip a very hot tea.

GreyDuck · Recommended product
I have a YETI with hotshot cap. It’s insulated really well and I like that you are drinking from a lip, not a spout. Comes apart and goes in the dishwasher, so really easy to keep clean.
See Post
Our verdict

While it has a relatively small capacity, we love the simple yet sleek look of the YETI Rambler HotShot Bottle, allowing you to drink your tea or coffee in a more natural way by removing the lid and sipping from the 360 lip.

As well as keeping your drink hot for hours, the durable double-walled stainless steel is dishwasher safe and completely rust and puncture proof - so it’s built to last the test of time.

While there is of course the potential you could knock it while the lid removed, its 100% leakproof once the cap is replaced. Unlike some travel mugs that can ‘sweat’ with hot drinks, you won’t find any unwelcome condensation on the exterior either!

Zojirushi are amazing. I have a couple of Contigo Auto Seals that have been sitting in a cupboard unused since I got my Zojirushi. It's slim and light, non stick inner, never leaks, easy to drink from and keeps a drink hot all day. It's honestly my favourite possession.
See Post
Our verdict

Despite its slim and lightweight design that’s ideal for stashing in bags or rucksacks during your commute, this Zojirushi travel mug comes with a generous 480 ml capacity - large enough to hold a medium-sized drink from your local coffee shop.

We love the lockable, leakproof sipper which prevents leaks and spills. It’s easy to sip from even when rushing for the train and in a choice of modern and stylish colourways, it won’t look out of place with more formal attire.

While it’s hand wash only (and shouldn’t be left to soak during cleaning), we love how this portable travel mug can keep your coffee suitably warm for up to six hours.

How to choose the best travel mug for you

Here are some factors you should consider when selecting the right travel mug for you:

  • Material - While plastic and ceramic travel mugs can be lightweight and budget-friendly, stainless steel tends to provide better thermal performance and will therefore keep the contents warmer (or cooler) for longer.

  • Capacity - Do you want a small and portable cup that can carry one cup of your favourite hot drink, or are you seeking a more substantial-sized cup that can see you through the whole day? Capacity tends to start at around 350ml (large enough for a small drink) or you can opt for larger flasks containing 600ml and above.

  • Ease of cleaning - Not all travel mugs are dishwasher safe, even the stainless steel ones, as some have delicate locking mechanisms and insulation that can be damaged if substantially soaked. While dishwasher safe is a bonus, you should look for travel mugs that have wide smooth interiors for easy hand washing, or caps that open up for easy cleaning.

  • How long does it keep drinks hot? - Heat retention can vary from one brand to the next, so consider your needs and what level of heat retention is best for your lifestyle. Some travel mugs will reduce the temperature of the contents over time, keeping your hot drink warm but ensuring it is ready to enjoy by the time you get to work. Others, with more impressive double-walled insulation, can keep your drinks hot for up to 6 hours. While you may pay more for the benefit, some travel mugs offer significant heat retention of up to 24 hours.

  • Type of lid - Is the lid leakproof? Can it be thrown into a bag or rucksack during your commute? How easy is the lid to drink from on the go? Is there a lockable sipper or can the lid be removed entirely? The latter is less suited to drinking while commuting but makes a great addition for your desk at work.

  • Overall design - what does the travel mug look like? What colours is it available in and does it have a handle?

What’s the best material for a travel mug?

While plastic travel mugs can be lightweight and practical for occasional use, stainless steel is the most thermally insulated material for you travel mug. Not only will it keep your drinks warmer for longer, but stainless steel is also far more durable, meaning its less likely to get damaged, punctured or leak during transit. The downside? Its a little heavier as a result.

Are travel mugs dishwasher safe?

This will depend on the brand. Some caps are dishwasher safe, while the main flasks are recommended to be washed by hand. Plastic has the potential to warp in high temperatures, so you may prefer to ere on the side of caution in order to prolong its life.

How long do travel mugs keep drinks hot?

Depending on the material and insulation type, you can expect a decent travel mug to keep your drinks hot for a minimum of 3-4 hours. Plastic travel mugs tend to lose heat more quickly, while double walled, insulated and vacuum-sealed stainless steel designs can keep drinks hot for far longer - between 12 and 24 hours.

What’s the best travel mug to buy?

Based on its overall performance and value for money, the leakproof Contigo West Loop Autoseal is the best travel mug you can buy today. With rave recommendations from Mumsnet users and thousands of five star reviews on Amazon, this easy-to-use, leakproof travel mug has a generous capacity and excellent heat retention at a relatively affordable price.

Recommendations from real Mumsnet users

First, we sought out the trusted opinions of Mumsnet users to get their feedback on the travel mugs that they rate, recommend and have used themselves during commutes or travel.

We also looked out for any negative reviews, where Mumsnetters highlighted products that they felt were poor quality, difficult to clean or failed to keep their drinks hot over longer periods.

We want to be confident that the travel mugs we recommend are fit for purpose, so we looked out for award-winning products or those that were well regarded in the marketplace, including those endorsed by food experts and consumer champions.

Authentic consumer reviews
