To think I shouldn't be named and shamed for not clapping

I clapped originally and it was lovely and everyone turned out for it here
Last week, after a rough night with DS I fell asleep after he went down and missed the clapping
A post went on our community Facebook group actually naming and shaming me.
I was mortified. The post said everyone else turned out and I showed the street up and if I can't spend a minute showing my appreciation I don't deserve to use the NHS if I or my family get ill
I ignored it at the time but I can't get it out of my head it's really upset me.

Reply and say that you fell asleep with your young DS, it’s not bloody compulsory.
Are they going to be shaming elderly or disabled ppl?

That’s a really shitty thing to do to you OP and it’s not on at all. I know why you feel upset but honestly, you shouldn’t. They’ve just made themselves look like a proper dickhead. I work for the NHS and I don’t go in for the clapping, and I wouldn’t judge anyone else who didn’t.

How dare they, I just can’t believe the cheek of people who do things like this. What you choose to do is entirely your choice and they have no idea of the factors that influence that choice.

I just feel like I'm a total outcast on my previously friendly Street now even though only one person posted it and only two others agreed

I’m NHS, no one in my street claps, including me.

As an NHS worker, I think that's absolutely awful of people to name and shame you. The clapping is lovely and demonstrates the support the NHS is receiving right now. I do think the idea of clapping though could be replaced by better political decisions and funding - unfortunately clapping solves no problem we face right now.

That is ridiculous. Your neighbor sounds unhinged! It’s not a compulsory activity and you can still appreciate the work that frontline staff are doing whether or not you bang a saucepan.

Tell the poster that you were busy making scrubs/masks for use by healthcare staff and didn't see the need to make a high-profile but low-value display of support.

Comment to say you were clapping, but you had gone to your mates for a BBQ. Start a proper shit storm.

If it becomes compulsory, either through social pressure or whatever else, it ends up being completely meaningless. The person that named and shamed you is a grade A fuckwit.

I have NEVER clapped, danced or sang on my doorstep and I have no intention to! I have family who work frontline NHS. I do care. However I think it’s cringe and makes NO DIFFERENCE to the NHS.

I cannot stand how every biddy and buddy in the street has turned into the Corona Police. As if it’s not bad enough we’re being told what to do by the higher powers like a bunch of monkeys (put a rainbow in the window, clap at 8, stand in the queue, dare ye not sit on the bench...) it’s a thousand times worse when Dave from 3 doors down who you had never laid eyes on prior to the 23rd of March, is now the self appointed boss of the neighbourhood. Our community groups have been outing people for cutting their own bloody grass.

I am fuming on your behalf OP. I would complain to the admin (they are a publisher and you have the right to privacy under GDPR rules among other publishing issues) and threaten legal action.

I don't clap because i dont want to. I told my neighbors i was putting the dc to bed (true, but even if i wasnt i wouldn't be clapping) people are getting so ridiculous over this.

There are lots of us who don't follow this ridiculous practice. in fact nobody in our street does it. It doesn't mean we don't support the NHS, it just means we aren't sheep.

the person attempting to shame you is a virtue-signalling fuckwit, and this thursday night ritual is becoming disturbingly fetishistic. ignore them. the nhs does not benefit a single molecule from someone standing on their doorstep clapping. more than half the people doing the clapping are probably very keen not to think about the concrete actions they could genuinely take to help the nhs - stopping smoking, eating 5-10 portions fruit/veg a day, getting bmi under control, exercising more, drinking less alcohol, resolving to never again vote Tory. but these things are hard. far easier to clap and cheer for a couple of minutes one a week and post snidely on Facebook afterwards. you keep yourself and your dc healthy and rested - that is a genuine help to the nhs.
