Waiting to hear from applications!!

Who else is waiting to hear back??

I have a job, that until recently I absolutely loved, but it's becoming too much now. I have decided I need a better work life balance, so applying for a slight change in roles.

I have only applied for two jobs so far, meet the criteria and qualifications, but I'm not sure if I will be considered or not, as it is a change, and I have very specific qualifications, so it's killing me waiting to see if these roles are worth applying for!! It's only been 2 days. 😅

Need to chat to others waiting too!!!

Also I have been in my current role 3 years, and was self employed for 7 years before that so feel very out of practice applying and interviewing. I'm excited and nervous all at the same time. 🙈

How long is it normal to wait???

I have applied for an internal move ( temporary) I can see in our application system that the status has changed to Interview in progress but I don’t have an interview time or date yet!!

Nugg · 28/08/2023 17:55

Me. An internal secondment and an external big promotion. Ideally want both as the secondment can start immediately while I hopefully go through the process of being recruited into the external one 🤣

Secondment closes on Wednesday and the external closes at midnight last weds. I'm DESPERATE to hear!!

My employers usually let you know within a week.

Good luck - keep us posted!

MamaTess · 28/08/2023 18:48

@Nugg and @Gizlotsmum super exciting good luck!!! I hope you don't have to wait too long.

The wait is unbearable, I'm super impatient, the first one I applied for I saw just before the deadline (like a few hours) so statement was quite rushed - might have blown it, but I thought it was better to apply than not at all, the other I was able to spend some time on and realise all the things I should have put in the first!! 😅

I think I am going to apply for two more this evening! 🤞

@MamaTess good luck to you too

Hi, hope you will hear something soon OP!

I have been with my current company for 7 years, it's a very niche industry and I find it extremely hard to change jobs. So far after about 15 unsuccessful applications in 2 weeks I've been told that

  1. my experience is not relevant (let's say I'm doing sales for "A" machinery and they want you to have experience with "B" machinery which was not mentioned anywhere. Nobody wants to give you a chance even though I meet all other criteria including desired qualifications and "A" and "B" are sort of similar and I imagine it won't be a problem learning about "B". Need to mention that "A" is so niche that only 3 companies in the whole country sell it! Do you mean to say my only options are these 3 companies unless I'm willing to step down in my career?!);

  2. companies could teach me how to sell "B", but only if I was under 30 (too old at 32 apparently);

  3. in this industry companies are looking to employ a "native" citizen (not a "naturalized" one) so I'm out;

  4. <as told by 3 recruiters> if I want to change jobs, I shouldn't be picky & should be ready to take a worse deal as my current salary/ benefits are apparently so good that 99% of companies cannot give me a better offer so again I'm out as "too pricy" for them.

Oh God, I can't really change jobs, can I. I feel like a fly trapped in amber. 😰

MamaTess · 29/08/2023 07:02

@toucaninjapan that's so frustrating!! I am in a very similar position actually. I work in a very niche area, and have quite a high qualification that I don't need for the roles that I am applying for. I'm actively looking for a slight career change although within the same field, so accepting a very small pay decrease might happen. I won't change jobs for much less though, as I know I'm worth it, I don't need retraining for these roles at all. I do feel a bit pigeon holed by my qualifications to be honest, and I'm not sure if I will be considered for these roles yet. However I have made a point in the personal statements to say how my skills apply with examples.

For me I guess it's like if a physiotherapist applied for a sports coach role. They don't want or need a physio, and aren't going to pay for one, but the physio has a ton of experience working with footballers and knows the sport inside out, has been dipping in and out of coaching throughout her career. Maybe that's not a good example I'm not a physio, and I think you might need qualifications for coaching. 🤣 But that is kind of how I see it. They don't need my qualifications so aren't going to pay for them, but equally may discount me because I'm a 'physio' and they aren't looking for one. But I don't want to be a 'physio' anymore. 😩

I'm 37, I hope that doesn't count against me, I hadn't considered that.

@MamaTess that really sucks, doesn't it.
Could you get moved internally to another department for example or is it not an option? I have had an internal interview not so long ago, all was going well until I discovered I am expected to spend 2 weeks of each month in China and I'm not really ready to do that (who cares about work-life balance? who cares if you have a family and/or small kids?)
I am now thinking maybe I should try getting into our media department or anything else apart from the industrial sales. It should make my CV more sellable in the long run.

It's funny how they are willing to train you at any age as long as you are already their employee (were you an accountant or a lawyer? are from the IT department with no sales experience? who cares, come as you are, we'll teach you everything!), but if you are an outsider - you'd better have that exact specific experience we're looking for.

MamaTess · 29/08/2023 08:00

I can't I work for a very small company, that is fantastic to be honest, and it's going to be very hard to tell them I'm leaving. But I travel alot and my hours are all over the place, it's a very lonely job. I have two young children that need me home in the evenings and weekends.

There are lots of vacancies for my role at the moment, and I could go self employed without issue, but I'm just not interested, I am desperate for a change.

I just had acknowledgement for an application that said they will be in touch within 6 weeks of the closing date if my profile meets criteria! 6 weeks!! 😩

OP posts:
toucaninjapan · 29/08/2023 12:44

@MamaTess lol 6 weeks?! They are being bloody ridiculous

Gizlotsmum · 29/08/2023 16:26

Oh my goodness. That is a long wait.. although at least they told you! Imagine not knowing that…

MamaTess · 29/08/2023 22:11

I know right, I was hoping to have had at least a few interviews by then! 😅

I have applied to 3 now, and found a fourth tonight that I would like to apply for. I haven't heard back from any at all - but with the bank holiday it has only been 2 working days since my first application! I don't know why I'm so ridiculously impatient!

Do they always wait for the closing date before shortlisting?

OP posts:
Nugg · 30/08/2023 16:26

I am still waiting too. 8 days now for the promotion external that I really want to be shortlisted for! Six weeks is a killer though!

Gizlotsmum · 30/08/2023 19:44

So still no confirmation of interview. Will be 10 days tomorrow and 5 since the application changed from under review to interview in progress…did some calendar stalking and think interview dates are 8th and 11th Sept…

MamaTess · 30/08/2023 19:57

One has changed in the portal to 'under consideration' I guess that just means that are reading through the applications.

ItsNotRocketSalad · 30/08/2023 20:10

I was there last month. I got the job, started last week, and I'm so happy there. Sending good vibes that the same happens for you all!

MamaTess · 30/08/2023 22:32

Congrats @ItsNotRocketSalad!!

Really hoping I at least get some interview experience from all my applications! 😩

That’s what ours did then changed to interview in progress ( but not sure if it is because I am internal that I can see that)

Do you think it means I have been added to a short list? Or just that they are reading it? It just said application submitted for a few days - this is the 6 week one and it stated 116 applicants - so I can't imagine they have short listed yet. 🤷🏻‍♀️

OP posts:
Gizlotsmum · 31/08/2023 09:38

@MamaTess not sure.. I suspect they are in the process of shortlisting

MamaTess · 31/08/2023 19:19

@Gizlotsmum I hope that process doesn't take 6 weeks! 🤣

Gizlotsmum · 31/08/2023 19:25

So I have an interview date and time!! Now to prep so I am not as terrible as I usually am in interviews. I know both the interviewers which sometimes makes it harder ( they are also both leaving the business!)

Nugg · 31/08/2023 19:56

@Gizlotsmum well done!! I hate being interviewed by people I know but also they've said I've interviewed well and they felt they could be impartial.

I've emailed today to ask if there's any news on shortlisting. Maybe sighed my death knoll 😂

Nugg · 31/08/2023 19:56

Knell!!! Autocorrect

Gizlotsmum · 31/08/2023 20:25

@Nugg fx they see it as being keen and interested!
