Retrained but shit at my new career.

I was managed out of my first job after retraining due to performance issues and quickly got a new job.
I have passed my probation but feel a bit intimidated. My manager says I'm scatty but also said i have improved immensely.Basically I'm scared of her and she makes me anxious so i make more mistakes. Plus i only had 1 day off in 3 weeks which is knackering. I have a performance meeting to address some concerns on Monday. So i am feeling demoralised....i'm shit at my new career right? I annoying as i got a first in training. What next if i get managed out...again?
Im not giving too many details as outing.

Confused one day off in three weeks IS knackering! (And is that even legal?!)

Harridan1981 · 12/03/2022 07:57

I think she means weekends, bit sick days!

I retrained as a teacher and was shite at a lot of it. Or felt I was at least. So now work in a school in an office based role.

TracyMosby · 12/03/2022 07:57

You have had one day off out of 21????? That cannot be legal surely?

I think OP means she worked 21 straight days apart from only 1 day off in that period

What? I read it as three solid weeks working with only one day off.

Don't write yourself off OP - it sounds like it's early days in your new career. Are you enjoying it or at least see the potential to enjoy it?

It's hard starting a new career. When I changed career I found it very stressful for the first few months. I love it now.

Avacadoandtoast · 12/03/2022 08:00

How long have you been in your new role? Be kind to yourself, you won’t be amazing straight away, but as long as you are doing your best and listening to feedback, keep trying to improve and don’t give up!

Treacletoots · 12/03/2022 08:02

No that's not legal and very likely the reason you feel you're on edge and making mistakes.

I also feel.your manager is the issue here and not you.

I'd look for.another job. This isn't going to improve.

Your manager has no idea how to manage and the lack of days off is illegal

malificent7 · 12/03/2022 08:04

3 weeks straight...1 day off and on that day i was on call.

Maybe you’re in the right career but at the wrong employer?
Working 20 out of 21 days isn’t someone who values you.
However much it seems

LIZS · 12/03/2022 08:08

Have you opted out of the working time directive? Is this a care job, zero hours? You need to insist on professional boundaries so you get a break and days off.

malificent7 · 12/03/2022 08:27

This is the 2nd employer that has treated me bad in this industry though. I have felt intimidated on one hand but supported in others. I havn't improved in all feedback in the last 3 weeks as I've been ground down but have taken on board some feedback and improved there. I can't be perfect 3 months in.

How could you pass probation but need a performance review? Ask for support and specific examples of where you need to improve? Further training, shadowing, ask for help or clarification. Some sectors play on your sense of obligation and guilt to exploit employees. Do they have high staff turnover?

TottersBlankly · 12/03/2022 08:45

You need to tell us what the job is.

There are roughly 70 million people on this island - I doubt your job will out you.

Monsterjam · 12/03/2022 08:52

Is it a nursing role?
I guess for now stop any unnecessary overtime so you have more focus at work. Can they get you a mentor or a coach?

malificent7 · 12/03/2022 09:05

I'm very wary of giving any info due to the no social media contract .

Plus mumsnet is a well known sm platform. Can't say anything else really sadly.

I know where i am going wrong. I am trying to improve. I would ask for shadowing but scary boss shadowing me will make me more anxious.

Is your job in care?

flipflopjump · 12/03/2022 09:18

No social media contract
Excessive hours
Is this a legit job? Or are you being exploited?

TillyTopper · 12/03/2022 09:22

Hi OP, please don't write off your new career - it could be you and not them! Firstly anyone having 1 day off in 21 days is going to feel ground down. Could you:

  1. Fix your schedule so you work a reasonable amount, say 5 days on 2 days off.
  2. Write down any feedback you get with an action plan. Then tackle it to improve. Example problem: Your reports are always late. Action: diarise them with reminders, set yourself dates for sending out drafts to get reviews, give people a date to give you a response.
  3. Don't try to do everything at once. Work through things step by step. Work out which areas you struggle in and then give yourself actions to improve.

Bear in mind the company may be totally chaotic, it may not be you at all!

malificent7 · 12/03/2022 10:48

We did go through a very chaotic period whilst systems changed but we have settled down now. I am being got at for every mistake but no praise for good work....mistakes are normally admin related when i am in a rush. They one one hand tell me to slow down so i don't make mistakes but on the other hand tell me to speed up as there are people waiting I feel like i am being gaslighted. I am oerimenapausal so get brain fog and possibly adhd/ asd but i doubt that will cut the mustard with them .
Yesterday my work was criticised in front of the whole office. I don't want to feel like a failure but I do.
