Retrained but shit at my new career.

I was managed out of my first job after retraining due to performance issues and quickly got a new job.
I have passed my probation but feel a bit intimidated. My manager says I'm scatty but also said i have improved immensely.Basically I'm scared of her and she makes me anxious so i make more mistakes. Plus i only had 1 day off in 3 weeks which is knackering. I have a performance meeting to address some concerns on Monday. So i am feeling demoralised....i'm shit at my new career right? I annoying as i got a first in training. What next if i get managed out...again?
Im not giving too many details as outing.

I knew this was health care before you confirmed. Given what you have posted, I imagine you are in a care home ’. Op, I’d really advise you to spend a. Year in the NHS, it doesn’t have to be in a hospital. You could maybe looking into a small rehabilitation unit or something along those lines? If I had started my nursing career in the private sector, I would have quit after a year!

bibop · 14/03/2022 04:07

I've read your entire thread and I don't think your employer is being fair to you. It sounds like quite a toxic work environment.

BiscuitLover3678 · 14/03/2022 04:17

@malificent7

I think i've decided to apply for a locum role....life is too short for ths kind of bullshit.
Yes! Life is too short. There are too many red flags here.
teezletangler · 14/03/2022 04:39

The good news is that there are so many different types of nursing jobs. Could you not go somewhere completely different? I'm a midwife and I'll admit that I am not a good ward/hospital-based midwife. I don't like high pressure and I struggle with multitasking in that environment, and I felt I was constantly undermined in that role. But I'm brilliant in the community. You can find your place too.

malificent7 · 14/03/2022 06:54

Its not a home...its a hospital. I worked in a care home before i qualified as a care assistant...wow..toxic!

Tbh i am sad as i retrained from teaching. ( was shite at that too) to do my current role and i have seen just as many toxic workplaces as my previous role. I was so passionate about my new career as mum died of cancer and i wanted to make a difference. I have been bullied on 2 of my placements. I worked bloody hard to get my 1st and was enthusiastic in lectures etc. My plan was always to locum and go pt as the stresses and strains are too much for a 43 year old like me.
2 jobs in less than a year though....that makes me look bad right?!

You still should be positive in your meeting, even if your plan is to leave. Remember your previous feedback, listen and come up with an action plan. Is there anyone from hr involved in the meeting?

malificent7 · 14/03/2022 07:47

I dont think so.

Oh OP, that sounds awful! This does not sound like a good work place.

I have to say that there is nothing like sending ADHD symptoms (ie scattiness) into a spin like over - work. Many of us with ADHD are like cats - capable of periods of very intense activity, but need a lot of down time.

Best of luck.

Not really, I have friends that left after 4 weeks because they did not like the vibe or the low pay. The way to think is that if a place does not match to what you need or want, it's not your place.

If you have the chance to leave and find a new job, then do it. Staying after realising the place is toxic, is like a bad relationship. Don't judge yourself, pack your bags and leave to have new experiences.

malificent7 · 14/03/2022 09:20

Good advice...i pointed out to my line manager this morning that i was making more mistakes as i worked 19 days straight and was knacketed and followed it up with " i'm not saying it's an excuse ad i do take responsibility" and her answer was " yes as im an adult."

OP posts:
malificent7 · 14/03/2022 09:21

MySoCalledL1fe · 14/03/2022 09:22

OP, have you started HRT? Please make an appointment if not, it can really help with brain fog. Also request a referral for ADHD, if you have it then there’s medication to help.

malificent7 · 14/03/2022 09:25

Also, i should be at my peak as i am newly qualified and should be better than those with years of experienceConfused

OP posts:
saraclara · 14/03/2022 09:27

I'm still bewildered. Working 19 days straight contractually in a hospital job still makes no sense to me. I'm going to have to ask my ward sister nurse DD what on earth job this could be and how it can possibly be legal.

Goldenharp · 14/03/2022 09:28

We had somebody who left within the week if it makes you feel better.

I had two jobs where I struggled and two where I was very successful. Sometimes a workplace is unpleasant and not a good fit. I remember how downcast I was about one of the jobs I had that wasn't going very well. I look back now and realise that a lot of it was due to the person I worked for and the firm culture rather than me being hopeless. I think once you're the scapegoat you should look for another job. It's very hard to get out from under that label, deserved or not.

malificent7 · 15/03/2022 08:58

I had a meeting yesterday and they were fairly supportive but dismissive that 19 days on the trot may affect performance.

OP posts:
JamieNorthlife · 15/03/2022 09:07

Have you decided if you are staying or moving to new experiences?

LIZS · 15/03/2022 10:14

Who is "they"? You need to insist on breaks in the rota to avoid working 19 days without a day off. What does the contract state?

PestorPeston · 15/03/2022 10:25

dismissive that 19 days on the trot may affect performance

Interesting, the IAEA seem to think that the workers at Chernobyl shouldn't have to work those sorts of patterns as it effects performance.

Get a new job.

malificent7 · 15/03/2022 16:17

"They" are manager and deputy. Apparently i shouldnt have told the surgeon i was working with i was newly qualified as " they don't want to heat excuses."

An example of the way I'm being managed:

Is this what they're telling you or what you believe?

If it helps, I was utterly crap at my first two jobs after graduating and it was only when I moved into a different area and changed a bit myself that I started to do well. Being the "most crap one" is a horrid dynamic and very hard to shake off if that's how people see you.

I wonder if being a bit more assertive would actually help you - I mean you've nothing to lose.

malificent7 · 15/03/2022 17:15

That's what they told me...in those exact words!

OP posts:
BowerOfBramble · 15/03/2022 17:16

Honestly they sound like utter idiots. Perhaps you need to be choosier with where you work and do more research before? Not that I'm blaming you but they sound like wallies.

malificent7 · 15/03/2022 17:54

I wish i could chose tbh...i live in the sticks and this os the shortest commute by far! Well yes " utter wallies sums it adequately!"
