How's everyone today, all enjoyed the bank holiday weekend?

OP posts:
Gally123 · 01/09/2020 12:42

@Chrissols - no- discovered my holiday cancelled just 5 days before due to go - and found out via hotel not from the company, so spent a lot of time on laptop trying to find a replacement - I need a break! Travel agent were useless, not interested, not sure why they bothered to open.

Then family problem, sister's other half who had a stroke last year had a seizure yesterday so back in hospital.

Back to DICT8 and the same struggle with poor sound etc. Feels like no BH at all!!

Chrissols · 01/09/2020 13:08

@Gally123 oh I am so sorry, you sound like you're having an awful time. My holiday is still booked for next month but not building up my hopes as it has been cancelled three times up to now (the first time being when Thomas Cook collapsed).

I really hope things improve for you 🤞

@Chrissols - it can so hard finding a holiday for a one person, all those companies bragging about no single supplements just put the basic price up anyway, and have the trips in November etc. Trying to find even a few days somewhere in England seems difficult at the moment as all the spaces are twin/double only. It is my one treat to myself, one holiday every year, and after this year I need it more than ever! If the company had bothered to tell me themselves earlier - apparently they cancelled a month ago - I might have had chance to find somewhere for a couple of days, see some sites, visit the odd museum etc, but they kept it quiet, saving on postage and not even an email or phone call. Grrrr. But they have lost (another) future customer. I hope you have better luck.

Rant over. At least the sun is shining now.

Hi - the Bank Holiday was a bit of a non-event. It was our wedding anniversary and we were supposed to be on a lovely river cruise from Switzerland, but this was cancelled at the beginning of lockdown. Had to make do with a trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, but it was very nice. At least it's lovely weather today - shame I am sat inside refreshing again Sad. So far, I've only had one letter first thing - waste of a morning. The 1st of the month comes around so quickly - time to post the invoice again - for what it's worth!

Chrissols · 01/09/2020 13:46

Happy Anniversary @alikat55. Yes, this morning has been very quiet, but hopefully with schools going back meaning more people will be back in work things may pick up.........forever hopeful

Gally123 · 01/09/2020 14:08

@alikat55 - yes hope you had a happy anniversary.

One positive thing from the weekend, my sister said that the local hospital where her other half was taken (she was not allowed to go as well) has not one single case of COVID at the moment, nice for them and an encouraging sign for hospital work to continue to get back to normal.

alikat55 · 01/09/2020 16:54

Thanks for all your good wishes. It's the same in our local hospital - my son in law is a respiratory nurse and it's been quiet for a while on the COVID front there. However, the department where I worked (on the flexible workforce) has not called me back in yet, as the workload has still not increased enough to warrant getting the casual typists back. I could do with a day or two a week back in the NHS to make up for the lack of work with DICT8, but we will just have to keep hoping the work increases when the schools return.

flutterby18 · 01/09/2020 18:52

I have had a substantial increase in work available today, so I hope that it continues and that it will be the same for everyone else. I am just going to hold on in there and hope it picks up from now on. I hope others get more work too soon Smile

Chrissols · 01/09/2020 19:00

I have had a couple of long ones - one 30 minutes, but apart from that very little. I am optimistic though as things in general seem to be going in the right direction.

OP posts:
Chrissols · 02/09/2020 09:43

No tasks so far today, maybe back to school isn't going to help after all.....

OP posts:
Gally123 · 02/09/2020 10:01

I have had a few but the sound quality of some has been very poor. When we finish a task it comes up with a prompt to remind us to spell check - it does not appear that the dictators get a prompt to listen to their own recording to check whether it is audible before uploading it, which would be nice.

Chrissols · 02/09/2020 10:04

How strange, I have never seen that prompt? Still not had any tasks either lol.........

Received my cheque this morning - that was quick Smile.

Chrissols · 02/09/2020 13:14

Mine just arrived too, it was quick last month as well 😀

Meha5 · 02/09/2020 17:37

@Gally123 :0 :0 :) if only !!! had one today that I had to take timeout from twice wound me up so much. You would think as there is so little to do in the hospitals at the moment they would at least take the time to dictate clearly - if only !!!!!

No too bad today though

Gally123 · 02/09/2020 18:01

Just shows dreadful double standards. But if they insisted dictators listened to their work it would cut out all the completely blank ones that have to be "re-dictated."

I have had a dreadful day, the volume of work has been there but the quality is dire; it is like someone in DICT8 thinks "she struggles through all the cr*p ones, give her some more." I don't mind doing them now and again; I think everyone should do their fair share of the rubbish, it is just when I have days and that it all there is, nothing of "light relief" I start to give up, it is very soul destroying to struggle through dictators whose native language is not English, who are in a corridor or noisy room, next to someone talking loudly on the phone, whispering into a handset so as not to disturb anyone, who gets gradually quieter and quieter until they fade away.....

Meha5 · 02/09/2020 18:43

trouble is they know the secretaries in the hospitals will make the letters up for them with the aid of the patients notes - we cannot even add an and, if or but for fear of certain confidence stripping from our lovely proof readers !

Poppy379 · 03/09/2020 08:46

@Meha5 @Gally123 I wonder if the secretaries receiving the work understand that we are only permitted to type exactly what is dictated (unless we want to spend ages typing endless messages in the notes box) and that we're not just really bad at constructing sentences and using punctuation?! I'm sure we all use the notes box if it is obvious a word has been omitted (especially if you don't want the person receiving the letter to think you haven't picked up on it), but I agree it's impossible to do that on the really bad jobs or you'd be there all day - which brings me back to the problem of the unpaid notes box!

Chrissols · 03/09/2020 09:11

I just type exactly what is said, even though a lot of it does not make sense, as got disheartened being picked up on any changes made, even though that is exactly what the secretaries would do when receiving it back

danblack87 · 03/09/2020 10:55

HI all, Sorry to hear that two of you have had problems regarding getting away Bank holiday and personal situations, especially when @gally123 you really could do with a break (particularly now it seems) ... just how I felt the other week - hit after hit after Angry. I am not going away until the end of September (cornwall/caravan site). The work has been dire for the last week but some through today. So, I will see how I fare. Chin up everyone!!! Hmm. Posted my cheque this morning Smile.

danblack87 · 03/09/2020 11:34

What I really object to is being told in the past "must type everything dictated" - Thank you, yes I did - the comment was related to a word I used (I remember the dictation clear as day - it is the only time I have used that 'word') In my mind I thought the word sounded wrong but no, after 15 odd times of rewinding and listening, I was convinced the word I typed was correct [stupid me: should have put it in the notes box Derrrrrrr !!!]. That is not 'missing dictation' that is what it 'sounded like' pure dictational error/accent. Little things like that really P* me off. Chilling, rant over LOL

danblack87 · 03/09/2020 11:51

BTW @alikat55: hope you had a lovely time away for your anniversary Flowers

Gally123 · 03/09/2020 12:03

@danblack87 I remember one feedback I had - I was told I had missed a word out. I too remember the dictation very clearly as it was about a two line letter and the dictator changed her mind and started again, without the "missing" word, so now when dictators change their minds but do not say anything to indicate they have changed their minds, I type it as dictated. Every word, even if it is repetitious.

Poppy379 · 03/09/2020 12:42

One frustrating thing is when you type quite a few lines, and then they say they've changed their mind and ask you to 'scrap that bit'. How difficult can it be for them to stop, rewind, resume recording?! Some dictators really deserve to receive a mish-mash of a letter if they can't be bothered to use their equipment properly.
